New, Organized Physical E . Program The Physical Education Department, under the direction of first year Athletic Director and Chairman Mr. James Segredo, is striving for a more organized. meaningful, and worthwhile gym class. I don't want the class to be taken lightly because it is very valuable, he said. The gym classes, which are taught by Mr. Angsten, will now offer physical conditioning, Weightlifting, and sports such as basketball, vol- leyball, and footballg the health class will still be a part of the curriculum. All of the activities will show the student the importance of exer- cise, said Mr. Segredo. Another way that the class will be more organized is by limiting the number of students per class. The smaller number of students will mean more space and organization to have a good gym class, said Mr. Angsten. And the students schedule will be much more clear cut since a student is likely to have gym with the same people each time rather than constantly being mixed into different sections. The gym will no longer be used as a study hall area because 'Sit prevents the class from operating smoothly and disrupts the atmosphere, according to Mr. Segredo. Although the class will be more organized, students will not be required to memorize game rules or techniques. Grades will be given according to attendance, strength standards, and effort. The incoming freshmen will be introduced to an organized program, but the older students will be better able to appreciate the changes since they already know what gym classes used to be likef, said Mr. Segredo. l Q ,.t,..-msd. it wk,,,4,m,,,.,,, :MQ-nm, M Mr. Jim Angsten, in his second year, teaches physical education and is assistant football coach. and is head football coach Mr. Pat Cronin has been at St. Rita for ten years. Solid Foundation In Industrial Arts 'UN is S ly? Q at 1 With the fields of architecture and carpen- try continuing to grow, the Industrial Arts Department continues to offer a solid foun- dation for both fields. Students who are interested in either area can take drafting and general shop. If their interest continues, they can go on to take architectural drafting and woodshop. The training that a student gets in these classes can benefit him if he goes into either of the fields whether or not it be for a career or just as a hobbyf, said Br. Joseph Fisher, Chairman of the Department. Twenty-six year veteran of St. Rita, Mr. Florian Dodge, teaches both the mechanical drawing and architectural drafting courses offered here. He also offers students practi- cal experience by finding some of them jobs for the summer, especially for those who think that drafting may become their life's work. Mr. James Economakas, a teacher of the two shop courses for twenty-eight years, introduces students to the basics of carpentry and working with wood. During the course of the year the students make clock frames, plaques, and bases for lamps. According to Br. Joe, these courses are only a small sample of what was once a very large department. As the years went on, the amount of students interested in the indus- trial arts started to fade, and courses like aeronautics, machine shop, electricity, and metal shop died because of it, he stated. I Mr. Florian Dodge, now in his twenty-sixth year at St. Rita, holds a B.S. in education from Northern would like to see metal shop in particular Illinois University.
