I SPEAK FOR DEMOCRACY My first conscious thought of democracy was in the bosom of the family, living in intimate contact in a home where peace was king We, as children were never at a loss for companionship We learned at our Mother's knee to think hard feel deeply, read wisely and long to find and appreciate the heritage of simple living in the land of the free So at an early age I learned the value of democracy I have learned to share with my fellow men I learned the valuable lesson of easing friction from my teachers as they eased the sting of a complex problem Democracy is a way of life It means a lot of things to a lot of people all sharing in the benefits that go to make a better way of life for all It means freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of the pursuit of happiness Our democracy is steeped in tradition We have our Paul Reveres our Lexington and Concord our washington Patrick Henry, and our Thomas Edison Democracy was born fighting for freedom, and will go on fighting to pre serve our way of life There were supressions on every front of our early democracy Had George III been able to take a look over in America at the time l77h, he would have seen 'minute mann by the thousands drilling with their guns and making ready to defend their country on a minutes noti e, and above all he would have seen the creating of the First Continental Congress In short King George would have realized that there were but two courses open to him to recede from his position or to make war on the continent We have heros from every walk of life, every creed and color The Consti tution of the United States, made in 1787, created the government under which we live, and is the supreme law of the land It has been pronounced the greatest document ever struck off at one time by the mind and purpose of man thus placing it above the famous English Magna Charta The men who made i were picked men sent by the various states and an abler body could not have been found anywhere Among the fifty five in number were, Benjamin Franklin George Washington James Madison, and Alexander Hamilton The birth of our democracy and its progress are forever immortalized through the Declaration of Independence Wwe hold the e truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness That to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their Just powers from the consent of the overned, that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the rlght of the people to alter or abolish it, and to instftute a new government laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such fo m as to those shall seem most likely to ect their safety and happiness Ard so it goes, our freedom to live and be governed, to sleep the sleep of the free, to breath the blessed air of the right to live in peace, to glve to our sons and daughters a heritage to che ish for all time Democracy is a quiet ng of fear that beset the best of men It is a prayer on the lips of millions It is pride in a way of life that installed within us a zest for living, a cause to stand by, and a reason to lay down our life for We have a nation that teaches us to speac with a tongue of intelligence we have a nation that fosters a love for all nations And s I speak for democracy May it reign forever 41 KF B 40fos no 7 l - , , , . v ' j ' 1 5 1 ' Q - 9 ' 9 3 -- , , 7 . . t, ' l P , , . s - : ' that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that , V .
