Free- man, Cox, Schultz. A. Smith. Mecaslin. WRE TLI G TE This years wrestling team climaxed the mat season with an appearance in the quarter-finals of the Maryland Scholastic Association 'liournament at Johns Hopkins l niversity. linjoying the most successful season since the revival of wrestling at St. Pauls. the '56-'ST squads regular eight men had an undefeated dual meet record. Although competing up to tournament time largely on a JY level. this yearis team showed itsclf to be capable of faster competition and will laid well for future recognition. 'lihe first team of Pete Keeler tll2I. Randy Sollenberger tl20t. Clyde Simons t 127 t . lid Freeman 1133 t . Ronnie Cox 1 138 v. Su-can Whiteford 1143 t. Neale Smith tl55l. and alternate Harry Mecaslin tl63t will lose three men this year with Sollenberger. Simons. and Wihiteford graduating. The season opened with a successful St. Pauls contingent overwhelming Friends' Yarsity at lfriendsf After Christmas vacation, Streett White- ford was elected captain of the team. Clyde Simons as second-in-command . A match with Cilmans B team proved.successful on home mats. A total of thirteen bouts ensued: six of the eight regulars won their matches. Such second- stringers as Preston Hartman. ,lack Hornsby. and Melvin Schultz gave promising performances. Gilman Reserves were again met at Cilmang this time seven of the eight Crusader entries won. Soon afterwards. McDonogh's B team was wrestled, also with a total of thirteen men. St. Paul's again came out on top. 'lihe Dundalk Y.M.C.A. Invitational 'llournament was entered next by the grapplers. Wlinning over such teams as Mervo, Kenwood. Dundalk and Milford Mill, St. Paulls placed five men in the finals. Pete Keeler was defeated by a stronger McDonogh opponent. Clyde Simons pinned Randy Sollen- berger in an interesting scramble, Ed Freeman won over Fanzone of Dundalk 9-2. and Neale Smith hnished off his Kenwood man with a pin. Simons. Freeman. and Smith were awarded champion's trophies. At the Maryland Scholastic Tournament. St. Pauls gained further recognition in mat circles lay placing three men in the quarter-finals. Neale Smith and Honnie Cox both came up against superior opponents in the first round at Mervo and were further disqualified. Pete Keeler van- quished his man easily. while Randy Sollenberger won an impossible'i match against highly- regarded Don Lihler of Poly. Ed Freeman de- feated Clairborne of Douglas in an exhausting eight minute overtime, 6-4. ln the second round, Keller was pinned by second-seeded. wily Harvey Bef-kowitz of City. Handicapped by a sprained ankle. Sollenberger was defeated by Possident of City. who gained the championship. Ed Freeman had a hard match in Mervois only once-defeated Frank Gorecki. and was edged by a single point. Captain Wlhiteford was disabled after a meet with Dundalk Y , which St. Paulis won. 23-T. He suffered a cracked anklcg up to that time he sported a winning record. The successful season completed by the grap- plers was mostly due to the excellent coaching of Don Hughes. himself an M.S.A. and Mason-Dixon Conference champion wrestler. Mr. Hughes is to be congratulated for his untiring effort and his pride in the team. Wlith five of the eight regulars returning and many coming up from undersquad ranks. St. Paulis grapplers look forward to another winning season next year.
