COMIC OPERA FEATURED IN CONCERT BEFORE STUDENTS On Wednesday, February 6th, a concert arranged by Mrs. William Carringer, the secretary of the Young Musicians' Series Recitals. was presented to the student body. It consisted of Shirlee Emmons, soprano, William McGrath, tenor, and Stanley Sonntag, one of New York,s leading accompanists on the piano. Shirlee Emmons is a recording artist for Victor Red Seal Records. She toured with the world-famous tenor. Lauritz Melchior, won the coveted Marian Anderson Prize in 1954, and last year, with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, sang Tosca here in Baltimore. William McGrath made his debut with Arturo Toscinini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra, singing Yerdi's Requiem, He has toured Europe, the Ifnited States, and Canada in operatic recitals, and while in Washington, sang a recital at the National Callery. Before the two singers presented their comic opera, they gave a short history of opera. It seems that about the year 1600 a man named Verdi wondered why plays couldnit be sung and acted at the same lime. Therefore an opera is a play in music as opposed to a play with music. He modeled the music after the chants sung in contemporary churches, and the plays were acted right on the front steps of the church. Later, men like Mozart stressed the music more. making a greater scale, and at the same time making the operas more realistic. Miss Emmons pointed out that there are two kinds of opera, the Classic which stresses the musical -aspect, and the Romantic which lays more importance on the story or plot. The opera Miss Emmons and Mr. McGrath sang was the comic opera entitled, The Secret of Suzanne, by Ferrari. It is the story of a jealous Count and his young, pretty wife, Suzanne, who is hiding some sort of secret. It takes place in Italy about the year 1910. In brief the plot is this: The Count, after coming in from the garden, smells tobacco smoke. He immediately suspects, since women did not smoke at that time, that she has a secret lover. He queries the maid, but she indicates nothing is amiss, so he determines to find out from his wife. He tries to question her in a round-about way, but succeeds only in making her angry and working himself up into a temper. He then repents of his suspicions and makes up, but she unwittingly renews his anger by suggesting that he go to the Club. He thinks that this would afford her an opportunity to see her lover. He decides to go so that he might return secretly and catch her in the act. He returns, but only succeeds in catching Suzanne in the act of smoking. The Count is so overjoyed that he forgives her petty sin and tries it himself. The opera ends with the happy scene of everybody smoking peacefully. 88 Mrs PaulF Alexander Mr and Mrs CeorgeW Armstrong Glen Almond Mrs C Delano Ames Mr and Mrs R C Annan Anneslle Tallors Mr and Mrs George Bacot Jr Rey and Mrs John A Baden Mr and Mrs B H Bader Mrs Walter Bader Clara W Baker Mr and Mrs DonaldC Bald Miss Mollle E Bald and Mrs John W Balz and Mrs ArthurL Baney and Mrs Laurence S Barrmger LaurenceS Barrmger and Mrs Chas E Beach and Mrs B D Beacham Mr and Mrs C M Beasman Jr Mr and Mrs CarlP Beernlnk Mrs El1zabethC Beck Mr and Mrs JamesD Beck Mr and Mrs S L Beers Mr RobertM Beers Mrs O A Bennett Mr and Mrs John O Benson Benson s Hardware and Mrs Wm B Bergen and Mrs Frederlck W Bren and Mrs T Lelgh Bren and Mrs Clarence E Blrch Mabel C Black Mr and Mrs Bradford E Blake 1957 Crusader Patrons Mr and Mrs L Bley Uncle Bob Mr and Mrs John T Bosset and Mrs Erne tW Bowles and Mrs B13yS S Bomerman and Mrs J C Boyce and Mrs Ed arM Boyd Mrs J H Boyden Mr and Mrs LOUIS Bresee Mrs S Broadwlck Vlr CharlesS Broun Woody Brumlield Vlr and Mrs C M Buchanan lxltt Buchanan Pllot Buchanan 'Vlr r I' ev r Vlr and Mrs Gustav Buchhelster and Mrs Clarence Buell and Mrs Thomas R Burc and Mrs Ceor e Byers and Mrs James C Cantler and Mr John C Carroll Mary C Carroll Jud e and Mrs Joseph C Carter Vlr and Mrs Mr and Mrs Vlrs Peter C Mr I' O M H Chambers Jr John W Chambllss Chamblxss and Mrs Edwm N Chapman and Mrs Randolph Church and Mrs Whrtner Church and Mrs Healey A Clark Ill and Mrs Louls D Clark n P Coale and Mrs Josephl Coale Jr and Mrs John C Cockran 89 Mr and Mrs CeorgeV Cokes Mrs CeorgeW Coleman Mrs Nelson R Coleman Sr Ron Coleman Mr and Mrs R C Coleman Cholly Collens Mr and Mrs CeorDeC 0Connell Mr and Mrs Thomas Cook Mr and Mrs Thomas Cols Mrs ThomasJ Copeland Mr and Mrs John C Corckran James D Cox Eleanor Holliday Cress Mr and Mrs E J Crum Mr and Mrs L L Curtin 'Vlr and Mr C A Darllngton Sr Butch Sklp and Jack Darrell Charles Holmes Darrell 'Vlr and Mrs Franc1sS Darrell Dr and Mrs Cary Davls Mrs Ceorbe W Dexter Mr and Mrs FIHHCISR Dlce Mr and Mrs Wllton Dlnges Betty Dobson Blll Dobson Mr and Mrs W1ll1amB Dobson 'VIr and Mrs Wllllam B Dobson Jr Mr and Mrs Franklfl Donaldson Jullan V Dowell Mr and Mrs Hu h Downs Jr Mrs Lrndsay D Dryden Jr MISS Bev Du Bose Wlr and Mrs Thomas Dukehart MISS Lllllan H Dushane . .
