I thanl you for your telegram informing me of the death of Abbot Pennings. I offer you and the members of the Community my heartfelt sympathy in this bereavement and assure you of a remembrance of his soul in my prayers. + Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York. Again assuring you of a remembrance in Mass and prayer for the soul of the dear de- parted, I remain. + Albert G. Meyer, Archbishop of Milwaukee. The diocese of Green Bay mourns the passing of a great priest who came to this diocese more than 60 years ago. He has spent these many years in this diocese laboring as a missionary, a pastor, and an educator. His outstanding work for the Church, both as a member of the Norbertine Order and a priest in the diocese of Green Bay, will long be remembered. The works that remain after him are the monuments to his zealous labors. + Stanislaus V. Bona, Bishop of Green Bay. In the death of Abbot Pennings we have lost a man of God whose life bears witness to the great things which can be accomplished by sincere dedication to God ' s service. While 1 extend to you and the members of your Order my sympathy, I thank God for the influence of Father Abbot ' s life upon the religious formation of our diocese and beyond. + John B. Grellinger, Aux. Bishop of Green Bay. The death of Abbot Pennings brings to an end a life of great achievement for the Church. A landmark has been removed from the Church in the middle west. At the same time we reflect with consolation of the fact that he has educated and formed many stalwart sons who will continue the great work under your (Abbot Killeen who is Abbot Pennings successor) able leadership. It is my fervent prayer that God will give you guidance and strength in the task that is yours. -f Thomas L. Noa, Bishop of Marquette. if, n j ' [ JoJcLi f 1 Oml ap ' W yAMu, ' A - - ■' - ' ' r. ' y t |T V IN MEMORIAM 1938 1955 Hi DONALD DE BOTH Donald De Both was born on September 6, 1938. He was a member of St. Mary ' s Parish in De Pare and attended grade school there, graduat- ing in 1954. In September of that year, he matriculated at St. Norbert High and completed his freshman year here. Only two days after school was dismissed, on June 8, 1 955, Donald became ill with Rheumatic Fever. For him, the summer vacation became a time of suffering. There were times when he would feel better— in fact, he anticipated returning here for his sophomore year, but the illness had weakened his body so that this became impossible. Just a few weeks after school opened, he died— on October 9, 1955. Donald ' s life on earth had come to an end. His purpose on earth had been completed. By a Divine Command, he would no longer be with his parents, his friends and his fellow-students. Yet, his death invites us all to reflect that it is not the length of one ' s life which matters, but how that life is lived. Let us who have known him in life not forget him in death. May his youthful soul rest in peace. St. Norbert High School can be proud of him and the whole staff for publishing such a fine yearbook. It must be remembered by you, the students of this high school that these men have spent many hours of their free time to bring this ARGOS to you. Remember also, that they have made for you, a compjete account of all the important happenings at St. Norbert High School. It is an account which in later years will become a most joyful history of all the pleasant times you had in high school. We, the members of the ARGOS staff, hope that you will appreciate our efforts contain ed in the ' 56 ARGOS. We would also like to extend our grateful thanks to our moderator. During the last fourteen years, the TIMES was published monthly, containing all the important events happening on the campus. It has been replaced by LANCE, a magazine that is not published quite as often, but contains better and more useful articles. One of the articles being held. over from the HI TIMES is Notes from the office written by Father Clabots. Other articles will deal with sports, activities about the school and other important news. The staff of LANCE should be recognized by the student body for giving up their time to publish such an excellent magazine. To the moderator. Father McBride and the editor, Ed Lueck, St. Norbert High School salutes you for your efforts. SODALITY m -• - .C ' p r ' or D Jar ' = e „ gas. ' ' ibba Oe °esc ,. The Sodality, consisting of about 25 members, again played an important part in the civic and spiritual activities at St. Norbert. Upholding their main purpose, the promotion of Catholic Action, the Sodality is dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. The Sodality attempts to cultivate an intense spirituality within its members and to spread this spirituality to others. The Sodality was highly praised for its Catholic Action by Pope Pius XII in the Apostolic Constitution of the Sodality of Our Lady, Bis Saeculari, ... Sodalists are rightly to be considered among the chief pro- moters of Catholic Action. Among the activities promoted by the Sodality was the advertisement of Catholic Youth Week on TV and radio, in news- papers, and the solicitation of posters in the De Pere-Green Bay business districts. Also, in co- operation with the Catholic Information Society, the members of the Sodality dispensed various pamphlets dealing with the truths of our faith. The Sodality also conducted a membership drive among the student body for The Fighting 69th which was very successful. The Sodality, mod- erated by Father Finnegan, had for its officers: Jim Piper, Prefect; Anthony Migas, Vice Prefect; David Dibblee, Secretary; and Paul Sibba, Treas- urer. THIRD ORDER Robef SW.bba ,oo The Third Order of St. Norbert is known as a secular tertiary of the Premonstratensian Order. This organization is very useful for the students at St. Norbert because the Third Order is aimed at developing in its members a true Christian charity as exemplified in its holy founder, St. Norbert. It is the oldest Third Order in the Church. One must be 16 before he can receive the White Scapular, a symbol of membership. The organization, moderated by Father Cenefeldt, consists of 27 members, 12 of whom have re- ceived the Scapular. Meetings are held every two weeks in which the members, both resident and day students, either lend an ear to an outside speaker or watch a movie. The Third Or der ' s purposes are to bring about social and religious actjvities and to create a mutual feeling between the day and resident students. The officers of this organization are: President, Steve Maresch; Vice President, Bob Clemens; Secretary, James Meli; and Treasurer, Wilbur Schaefer. RIFLE CLUB This year, more than any other, the Rifle Club seems to have taken a firm toe-hold as a popular organization about St. Norbert. Moderated by Father Robert Finnegan, its main purpose is to teach the fundamentals of shooting and to strive for marksmanship. Once a week the members, of v hom there are forty students, both resident and day, practice at the fifty foot range which is located in the basement of the Van Dyke Gymnasium with the caliber .22 rifle. The club maintained its membership in the National Rifle Association of America and obtained great as- sistance under a civilian marksmanship program set up by the Department of the Army. As in other years, the Rifle Club entered the NRA Postal Matches, and finished above average. Besides entering these matches, the organization fired postal matches against Campion, Middletoh, Sup- erior Central and Pius XI and managed to come out on top in most of these matches. Also, they fired a shoulder-to-shoulder match against Pre- montre. During the past year, John Renn acted as President and Paul Skibba, Jim Meli, Bob Arnoldussen, Joe Skibba were the other officers. KNIGHTS OF THE ALTAR A most important task of every Catholic High School is the securing of altar boys. At St. Nor- bert High, this is handled sufficiently by the organization known as the Knights of the Altar. Moderated by Father Clabots, he assigns the members of this group to assist the priest at the 7:00 Mass daily which the students attend. Servers are also assigned to the side altars at this time. In addition to serving at Mass, the Knights of the Altar also serve at the weekly benediction and the Holy Hour on the First Friday of every month. In order to accomplish these assignments properly, the server must be alert at all times and aware of the Church rites taking place. The members of the Knights of the Altar feel it is a great honor to be a part of such an organization and to be able to participate more fully in the ceremonies of their faith. CHOIR ' -e e. ' , ' cfte. Once again as in the past, the Squire Choir continued to perform their usual functions and procure a little more knowledge in the art of song. As far as fulfilling their yearly duties, they sang for the annual Christmas party, featuring the traditional Laetabundus in English and a 2 part arrangement of O Come Emmanuel. Through the efforts of Father Alfred McBride, the choir met once a week on Tuesdays and pre- pared some motets from the masters of the 16th century such as In Monte Oliveti by Martini the work Improperia written by Father Sromo- vsky was started for Holy Week. The purpose of the choir is twofold: primarily, to sing the High Masses which the students attend and sec- ondly, to offer an opportunity for singing to the students who desire to do so and to introduce the members to some of the world ' s good choral music. RETREAT This year, the annual retreat for St. Norbert High School was conducted from February 27 to 29 by Father James Meehan, who is a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. The retreat consisted of various conferences, the Stations of the Cross and a Holy Hour. The conferences delivered by Father Meehan dealt with the more important matters of the Catholic Faith. An annual retreat is given in order to rehabilitate the stu- dents spiritual life and to confer upon them a new outlook on life. The retreat was closed with a High Mass sung by the Frater ' s Choir and the Papal Blessing by Father Meehan. .x ATHLETICS of J ' s, ,.o ' (y FRED DILLON Head Coach FATHER L M. As far as the Squires were concerned the opening was not a happy one because Premontre took home a 19-7 victory. It was the first time in seven years that the Squires and Cadets have met on the gridiron. Premontre scored in each of the first three quarters, the first TD coming after a fumble recovery and a 40 yard march, Jim Brunette going over from 10 yards out. The Cadets again counted in the 2nd period on a 19 yard pass from John Fabry to Don Murawski, and in the 3rd on a 2 yard plunge by Brunette, both scores following 30 yard punt returns by Gary Heroid. Later in the period the Squires broke the ice as Roger Zimmerman picked off a hurried Fabry pass and raced 30 yards for the score. In the 4th quarter the Green and White forced the issue and moved the ball deep into Cadet territory twice, but each time they lost the ball on downs. ROGER ZIMMERMAN Fullback GARY SIMOENS Halfback COLUMBUS, AAARSHFIELD The St. Norbert Squires picked up their first victory of the year at the expense of Marshfield Columbus by a 34-14 count. The Squires scored the first time they got their hands on the ball after Roger Zimmerman intercepted a pass on his own 42. Bob Mullen climaxed the drive by scoring from two yards out. An Olbrantz to Lax pass provided the extra point. Later in the period Roy Sommers recovered an enemy fumble on their 13 and Olbrantz punched over for the tally from 6 yards out. In the 2nd quarter, the Dillonmen got their 3rd TD on a 24 yard Olbrantz to Gramowski pass. Simoens converted. The Dons scored the only points in the 3rd period by virtue of a 48 yard drive with O ' Reilly crossing the goal. In the last quarter the Squires scored their final two tallies, the first coming after a 70 yard drive with Zimmerman going the final 14 yards. Simoens again converted. The last one came under the direction of freshman Buck Ambrose, Jim Brady scoring from 4 yards out, and the point coming on a pass from Ambrose to Jerry Klister. Before the game ended, Columbus produced another tally with Dix scoring. TOM SCHUMAKER Halfback ROGER DAANEN Halfback ST. JOHN, LITTLE CHUTE St. Norbert opened the defense of their title by defeating St. John ' s by a 19-0 score on a rain soaked field in Little Chute. The Squires scored the first time they had their hands on the ball with Norm Olbrantz flipping a 36 yard pass to Tom Schumaker for the tally. Gary Simoens added the point. A 34 yard TD run by Zimmerman was nullified by a penalty later in the period. In the 2nd quarter the Dillonmen went on a 64 yard drive to score, with Olbrantz sneaking over from the 2. The conversion was missed, and the Squires led 13-0 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Dutchmen marched down to the Squire 19 for their deepest penetration, but were halted. St. Norbert reached the Little Chute 8 in the 4th period but were held. St. John punted to their 30 from which point the Squires scored in 8 plays. Bob Gramowski going the final yard. The point was again missed and the final score read 19-0. NORMAN OLBRANTZ Honorable Mention Ail-American Quarterback i BOB GRAMOWSKI Halfback i LOURDES, MARINETTE With three touchdowns in the first half, St. Norbert captured its second straight conference victory, downing Lourdes of Marinette 26-7. Early in the game, Lourdes had the ball on the Squire 15, but they fumbled and the Green and White went on an 85 yard scoring drive. Roger Zimmerman scored the TD and Simoens con- verted. A little later, Bob Moran recovered a Shamrock fumble on his own 44. From here the Squires drove to their 2nd score with Olbrantz punching over. Near the end of the half. Ken Schaul blocked a punt on the 15 and Tom Vandelist recovered it on the 5. On the next play Zimmerman scored. In the 3rd period Lourdes scored on a 57 yard pass play from Rod Kopish to Bud Taylor. The 4th quarter brought the Squires final tally, which followed a fumble recovery by John Lax on his own 49. After a penalty, Olbrantz tossed 25 yards to Simoens to the 31 and Bob Mullen took it the rest of the way on the next play. KEN SCHAUL Guard _ TQM VANDELIST End m S STURGEON BAY Utilizing their ground attack to the fullest extent because of the steady rain that fell, the St. Norbert Squires defeated Sturgeon Bay in their annual home- coming battle at AAinahan Stadium. After a Sturgeon Bay punt, Gary Simoens ran 44 yards to the Bay 30 yard line. Here, though, the Squires were held. A few plays later Bob Moran dropped the Clipper punter on his own 25. St. Norbert drove to the 6 from where Simoens scored the TD. The Squires scored again with 48 seconds remaining in the half on a two yard thrust by Tom Schumaker. Olbrantz tossed to Lax for the extra point. The 3rd period was scoreless, but the Squires started their final touchdown drive near the end of the period. From their own 26, the Green and White ground out their last score of the game, with Olbrantz going the final foot for the tally. The conversion was again missed, and the final score stood 19-0 in favor of St. Norbert. i BOB MULLEN Halfback BOB MORAN Guard N| w i- i 1 -X ' f ■. ST. MARY, AAENASHA In the game to decide the Fox River Valley Catholic Crown, the Zephyrs of St. Mary ' s defeated our St. Norbert Squires 21-14 at the Menasha home field. St. Mary received and moved the ball to the Squire ' s 47 where they lost it on downs. On their first play from scrimmage, the Green and White scored as Roger Zimmer- man burst between his tackle and end, outraced the Zephyr secondary, and went 53 yards to pay dirt. Bob Mullen circled the end for the extra point. The Squire lead was short, though, as on the second play after the kickoff Skip Schurer threw a pass to Ted Pontow who gathered the ball in on the Squire 40 and went the rest of the way untouched on a 71 yard play. Ken Konkol converted to tie the score. With about 3 minutes left in the first half, the Zephyrs worked the ball from the 50 down to the 16 where Schurer raced around end for the score. Konkol again converted. At the start of the 3rd period, the Zephyrs took over on their own 16 after an Olbrantz punt. It took the Zephyrs only 5 plays to cover the distance with Schurer again going over from 25 yards out. The conversion was good. The Dillonmen stormed right back on the arm of Norm Olbrantz for their last score with Zimmerman going over from the 7, and also converting. The Squires had two more chances but could make neither pay off in a score. The wins actually made a success of the short season as they came oyer our two archrivals. Central Catholic and St. Mary Menasha. The season opened at Menasha where the Squires were soundly beaten by the Zephyrs, 29-9. The unseasoned team found it hard going, but gained valuable experience for future games. Traveling next to Little Chute, the Squires lost to St. John High, 13-5. Lack of a coordinated defense proved to be their main problem. Next, in Green Bay, Bob Mullen did an excellent job of pitching the Squires to their first victory of the year, over the Central Catholic Cadets, 6-3. It was a one hitter, with the extra runs on base because of a walk and error. The Kawaunee High team was stubborn as they beat the Squires on their home diamond, 2-1. Again, it was a pitchers duel with the Kewaunee runs scoring on errors. On our home field, the Cadets beat us in a return match that found them seeking revenge, 6-5. St. John also visited De Pere and found themselves on top of a 9-5 score, thus sweeping the series. In the last game of the year, the Squires found it sweet to take a 5-4 decision to St. Mary, Menasha. Ron Dibelius pitched for the losers and Bob Mullen for the Squires. J.
