ST. NORBERT Apostle of the Blessed Sacrament Archbishop of Magdeburg ounder of the Canons Regular of Premontre cr T has often been said that the history of a religious order is the elongated shadow of its founder. This is very true in the case of the Canons Regular of Premontre, or Norbertine Fathers, as they are commonly called. Although St. Norbert lived over 800 years ago, his apostolic spirit is present in the Order today. As a basis for its external apostolic life, the Order demands of its members an intense spiritual foundation. The ends of the Order which have developed over the centuries are: 1) Praise of God by Divine Office in Choir,- 2) Special devotion to the hHoly Eucharist; 3) Special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary,- 4) Spirit of penance,- and 5) Zeal for souls. These ends, which are inculcated into the spirit of the members of the Order, are assisted by the daily spiritual exercises of the Norbertine Religious. The exterior activities of the Norbertines differ according to the needs of the location of its houses. Thus, in hHungary, teaching in the gymnasia is the principal work. In the Abbeys of hlolland and France, the foreign missions has been a center of activity along with a specialized apostoiate (retreats, press, liturgical apostolate, teaching). In the Central European Abbeys, the traditional parochial ministry prevails. Here in the United States, the Order con- ducts four high schools (West De Pere, Wis., Green Bay, Wis., Philadelphia, Pa., and Claymont, Del.), a college (West De Pere, Wis.), two radio stations ' WBAY (Green Bay, Wis.) and WHBY (Appleton, Wis.), a television station, WBAY-TV (Green Bay, Wis.), a summer camp for boys at Cecil, Wis., Camp Tivoli, and numerous parishes in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Montana. From this, it is seen that the Order is still faithful to its age-old motto, Prepared for every good work. The 1955 ARGOS pays tribute to the Norbertine Order and its founder, the heavenly patron of our school. Our cover was designed to illustrate the true Catholic leadership which is obtained from the teachers here. During the course of the yearbook, we have tried to illustrate by picture and word, this leadership in practice, in our classes and activities. Page 6
