NORBERT HIGH SCHOOL WEST DE PERE, WISCONSIN 1955 VOLUME THIRTEEN FORWARD HERE are those who consider a school annual as somethins worth far less than the sacrifices en- tailed in its creation. I, for one, am strongly opposed to this view. This is the thirteenth volume of the Argos. Each volume is the creation of the students under the guidance of a faculty monitor. Each volume has an individual character — the product of creative minds working together to record faithfully, for the present and for posterity, the work — pray — play activities of the total group that is St. Norbert High School. The first Argos had forty-eight pages. It has now grown to twice its original size, in its make-up it has never been just another annual, to be looked at just once and then discarded. It possesses an enduring character. Moreover, it has never had to dip into tuition funds to pay its way. Part of the credit for this must go to its advertisers and its patrons to whom we are deeply grateful; their loyalty was easily elicited through the faculty moni- tor and the students. I am certain that the present volume will share, with its sisters, a supremely enthusiastic reception; that it will be more cherished as time passes when you as a faculty member or you as a student wish to recall the happy days we spent together; what we achieved here working together, praying together and playing together. NORBERT Apostle of the Blessed Sacrament Archbishop of Magdeburg ounder of the Canons Regular of Premontre cr T has often been said that the history of a religious order is the elongated shadow of its founder. This is very true in the case of the Canons Regular of Premontre, or Norbertine Fathers, as they are commonly called. Although St. Norbert lived over 800 years ago, his apostolic spirit is present in the Order today. As a basis for its external apostolic life, the Order demands of its members an intense spiritual foundation. The ends of the Order which have developed over the centuries are: 1) Praise of God by Divine Office in Choir,- 2) Special devotion to the hHoly Eucharist; 3) Special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary,- 4) Spirit of penance,- and 5) Zeal for souls. These ends, which are inculcated into the spirit of the members of the Order, are assisted by the daily spiritual exercises of the Norbertine Religious. The exterior activities of the Norbertines differ according to the needs of the location of its houses. Thus, in hHungary, teaching in the gymnasia is the principal work. In the Abbeys of hlolland and France, the foreign missions has been a center of activity along with a specialized apostoiate (retreats, press, liturgical apostolate, teaching). In the Central European Abbeys, the traditional parochial ministry prevails. Here in the United States, the Order con- ducts four high schools (West De Pere, Wis., Green Bay, Wis., Philadelphia, Pa., and Claymont, Del.), a college (West De Pere, Wis.), two radio stations ' WBAY (Green Bay, Wis.) and WHBY (Appleton, Wis.), a television station, WBAY-TV (Green Bay, Wis.), a summer camp for boys at Cecil, Wis., Camp Tivoli, and numerous parishes in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Montana. From this, it is seen that the Order is still faithful to its age-old motto, Prepared for every good work. The 1955 ARGOS pays tribute to the Norbertine Order and its founder, the heavenly patron of our school. Our cover was designed to illustrate the true Catholic leadership which is obtained from the teachers here. During the course of the yearbook, we have tried to illustrate by picture and word, this leadership in practice, in our classes and activities. Page 6 eultu U K RIGHT REVEREND BERNARD H. Cauwenbergh, Dibble?. - HE student council is the medium whereby the problems and recommendations of the students are presented to the administration. It consists of boarder and day student repre- sentatives from each class and four officers, nominated by the faculty and elected by the students. Meetings were held on the second and fourth Mondays of every month under the supervision of Father Clabots. In the past few years the student council has become a strong organization and has succeeded in gaining many benefits for the student body. Page 15 PRESIDENT C. Tom Johnson climaxed a series of running plays vv ith a 2 foot plunge for the T. D. The try for the extra point failed. In the second ha lf, after an Olbrantz to Johnson touchdown pass was nullified by a clipping penalty, Jansky replaced Olbrantz. On the next play, a quarterback keeper, Jansky raced 27 yards around left end to pay dirt and the final 6 points. Again the try for the point after touchdown was stopped short. John- son blasted through the middle for the 6 to lead. Sheridan re- ceived the kick off on his own 20 yard line and raced 80 yards to tie up the game. When an Olbrantz punt was blocked on the 26 the Dillonmen had to put up a stiff stand but took over on their own 3 yard line. The Squires kicked to open the second half but Columbus had to punt after getting nowhere and St. Norbert took over on the 40. Jansky blasted through for nine yards to the 31 and lugged the pigskin the remaining distance to pay dirt. After a blocked punt, Zimmerman carried for 24 to the seven where Simoens covered the last seven for the tally. Tomasini recovered a fumble on the Sham- rock 27 which set up Johnson ' s five yard end run to pay dirt. A Vanderfinn to Dory pass gave Lourdes their only tally. Olbrantz and Simoens teamed up on two passes; the second good for 33 yards and the score. Those working on the staff receive no benefit other than that of personal satisfaction in seeing their work being enjoyed in the hands of the other students. The Argos is the one means by which we .nay recall the memories of our unforgettable days here at Saint Norbert hiigh School. This paper contains all of the important events that happen on the campus. Meetings of this organization are held once a month under the direction of Father McBride who is the capable moderator of the paper. At these meetings the staff and moderator discuss just whet will be in the next issue of the paper. One of the few consecutive articles to be in the paper, is the great and encouraging Notes from the Office, written by Father Clabots. This article gives vital advice to all students who read it with attention. Only the editor and the members under him really know the amount of work that goes into the paper, but their efforts are greatly appreciated by the student body. Pete Paul and Lloyd Jansky. The members are to realize that their duties at the altar are to be carried out with care and dignity. In serving at Mass one can especially take an active part in the Sacrifice which is the basis of our Faith. Membership is not limited, but to be a member one must be of fine character and have the desire to assist in the ceremonies of the Church. A new system was adopted in the running of the meetings this year. The group was divided into two units, each headed by a prefect for the purpose of conducting a dis- cussion according to the new unit plan. One of the many proj- ects taken up by the Sodalists was to acquire a sufficient s upply of spiritual pamphlets during the time of the retreat. A member of the Order should develop a love for the liturgical life and a true zeal for the devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The example of this love and zeal is the founder of the Order, Saint Norbert. To be in this organization one must be at least 16 years old, have a high moral standard, and always strive to attain Christian per- fection. One of the privileges that is looked forward to by those enrolled is the wearing of the white habit of Saint Norbert at one ' s death and burial.
