We have come to think that a yearbook makes an inapt medium for calculated message bear- ing. Yearbooks have become stereo- typed pictorial histories of the things about a school which are most easily pictured and most highly regarded by the citizens thereof. A yearbook's con- tents and emphasis are a better com- mentary on the orientation of a school than any self-conscious and superim- posed recitation of the ideals of Chris- tian education. A tree is judged by its fruit, not by its name-. If a school is really Christian, the evangel is super- fluous. If it is not, the evangel is in- congruous. And so, this year the Argos speaks for itself. It tells you about St. Norbert High School, 1951-53, as seen and evaluated by its own students. Lourdes, Marinette FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS of the FOX RIVER VALLEY CATHOLIC CONFERENCE Page 33 St. Norbert High school opened its 1951. football season by defeating Chilton High school, zo-7 at Minahan Stadium. The Squires took charge from the opening period and were never seriously threatened. Pranke, Ander- son, and Baugnet figured in the scoring for the locals. ln the first quarter, a Baugnet to Pranke pass was good for 45 yards and a touchdown. The Dillonmen scored in exactly three plays after the start of the second half, with Anderson carrying the mail. lt was Pranke again on the third score, going 24 yards after a pitchout from Baugnet. A re- covered fumble set up the Chilton score, with Mertens going from the four. Two extra points were by Baugnet via placements. The boys looked good for an opener. Maybe they looked too good. ln the next game they traveled to Escanaba for a night tussle, with St. Joseph High school and were rudely treated to a I4-I3 loss. The score does not tell how clearly the St. Nor- bert squad was outspirited. The Green and White was figured to take this one easily, Rev. Mark Steinmetz, O. Praem. Athletic Director but the boys in Escanaba hadn't heard about it. It was their homecoming and they made the most of it. St. Norbert scores were by Pranke in the f1rst quarter from the four after two sharp passes, Baugnet to Desorcy set up the TD. Baugnet kicked the point. The second St. Norbert score did not come till the last five seconds of the game, when Baugnet hit Desorcy, F iss and Gibbs in that order for complete passes, the last one for 8 yards and the tally. The all important extra point failed in two tries, the first being nul- lified for offside. St. joseph made good use of passes in setting up both of its touchdowns. What especially marked their play was the obvious desire to win. Building a commanding IQ-O lead at half time St. Norbert High coasted to an easy 32-12 victory over Stephenson, Michigan, on the third of October. It is interesting to note that this same Stephenson team handed St. joseph of Escanaba a sound trimming earlier in the season. St. Norbert scored the first time they got the ball. A few plays later, Baugnet whipped a I7 yard pass to Fiss in the end zone. Both extra points were missed. In the second pe- riod, Pranke set up his own short touchdown run by scampering 53 yards to the eight yard line, Baugnet kicked the added tally. In the second half, a recovered fumble set up the Stephenson first touchdown. After a pass and long run by Hoffer, Anderson went over again for the Squires from the 18. In the last quar- ter, Hoffer scored after a good run by little Tom johnson. Held to a 13-13 tie until the fourth period St. Norbert scored twice in the final quarter to defeat St. Mary of Menasha 16-13 in the Green and White's first conference tilt. St. Mary scored first after recovering a St. Norbert fumble on the kickoff. The Squires retaliated by moving the ball from the St. Mary 18 in a drive climaxed by a pass from Baugnet to Desorcy which covered 68 yards, air and ground. Baugnet's kick put the Dillon- men ahead, 7-6. St. Norbert increased the ,v Mike Smith joe Desorcy lead when Hoffer went over from the 7, after power football had moved the Green 78 yards. Another fumble donated a tally to the Zephyrs just before the half. ln the final quarter, the Squires came to life with two touchdowns, one by Anderson, and one by Hoffer on an interception. Baugnet missed only one extra point. Three fourth period scores, two coming in the final minute and a half, gave the Dillon- men a 26-18 win at St. Mary Springs of Fond du Lac October 18. Trailing 18-6 with but I2 minutes left to play, the Squires woke up and scored on two passes and a pass interception. Before they went ahead zo-18 with 1:31. showing on the clock, the Green and White had led on only one previous oc- casion, in the first quarter, 7-6. Careless pasS defense was responsible for the Squires' plight in this game. On the other hand, St. Norbert made good use of the air in scoring its own tallies. The first TD was by Pranke from the four. The extra points were by Baugnet again. On October 24, the Squires rose to the heights of the season when they dropped the Dutchmen of St. John, Little Chute, from the ranks of the undefeated and unscored on, to the tune of 13-o. The Dillonmen wanted this one, and they would not be denied. Play- ing hard and smart football, they scored the second time they had the ball against a squad that had not seen its goal violated previously that season. The second St. Norbert score came in the third canto when Baugnet con- verted for the extra point. The defense was especially brilliant on this night. A goal line stand which pushed the Dutchmen back to the ten, and the slashing defensive end play of joe Desorcy kept the Chuters on their heels most of the night. As it turned out, this was the win which insured the Squire hold on the conference title. The Irish of Lourdes, Marinette played dogged defensive ball for all of the first half, Chuck Fiss but could not hold the dike during the second half, and dropped a 1.7-6 decision to the St. Norbert squad in a victory that clinched the Conference title for the Squires. The game was played at Minahan Stadium for the Green and White homecoming, November 2. Anderson scored in the last 30 seconds of the first half on the delayed buck which had been his big punch all year. Baugnet converted. In the second half, Gibbs scampered 31 yards around end, and later took a Baugnet pass from the I7 to score, after Anderson had opened the scoring with an eight yard bolt over tackle. Baugnet missed only the last extra point. Lourdes scored its lone touch- down in the last play of the game when I-laugh went 50 yards. St. Norbert High school won the conference title for the third time in the last four years. The victory was expecially sweet this year, because it included the abrupt end of St. john's victory skein, a string which included a lQ5I win that bumped the Squires from last year's title. 1 jim Quinette Amie Baugnet ,X ' . Central, Green Bay St. Mary, Fond du Lac The Squires' opposition for the opening game of the 1952-53 season was provided by West Green Bay. However, the Dillon- men lost, 55-51, for a bad start. High scorers for the evening were joe Pranke and joe Desorcy with If points apiece. St. Norbert tasted victory for the Hrst time by defeat- ing Denmark High by the close score of 51-50. It was a see-saw affair, but St. Nor- bert was out on top when the all important final second ended. joe Desorcy scored 26 points for the winners. On November 25, an early lead proved helpful as the Maryheart Eagles came close to tipping the Squires, but eventually lost in the final minutes, 66-5 7. The Squires were doped to win this one go- ing away. It was a kind of augur for the sea- son, which saw the Dillonmen run hot and cold without much pattern to guess on. 1 - 11 5 X . ik- qw ' -' ft - qw 2' fig. 1 1,5 joe Pranke Fred Ophoven Chuck Fiss Page 4' Page 47, Stephenson High became the third victim in a row, falling to the Squires by an undeni- able margin of 67-41. joe Desorcy again led the scoring with IQ points. St. Norbert won their first Fox River Valley Catholic confer- ence game by defeating St. Mary Springs, 57-56, on a free throw with zo seconds re- maining in the game, after watching a 15 point lead disappear in the last 6 minutes. Fred Ophoven led the winners with 7.1 points. ln a thrilling overtime battle, December 9 at Van Dyke gym, Lourdes of Marinette saw the Dillonmen outlast them by scoring 9 points in the overtime period. Fred Ophoven again led the Squires with 30 points, but Payette of Lourdes topped him with 32. St. Norbert squeezed by St. Mary of Me- nasha, 50-49, when joe Pranke dropped in a free throw after the game was over. This marked the Squires' third conference victory, the second by one point. High scorer for St. Norbert was joe Pranke with 16. On Decem- ber 16, the St. Norbert team met a humiliat- ing defeat at the hands of a strong Central Catholic of Green Bay aggregation, 74-36. The Central team was unusually hot. They could not seem to do anything wrong. St. Norbert seemed to be overawed, and lacked the drive for a comeback spurt. joe Pranke, however, led the scorers of both teams with 16. East Green Bay handed St. Norbert their third loss of the season by the score of 53-49 in a close tilt. joe Pranke again led all scorers with 14 points. It was close until the last quarter when the Red Devils pulled steadily away to the final margin. St. Nor- bert regained their winning ways with a close victory over Lourdes on a last minute basket, 54-53. The game was played at Mar- inette, where the Shamrocks are always tough. joe Desorcy led the victors with I4 points. With joe Pranke lead- ing the way with 37. points, St. Norbert gained another conference victory over St. John of Little Chute. It was close all the way, but the horn found St. Norbert on the long end of a 75-64 score. St. Mary of Me- nasha stepped off to an early lead, and held it all the way to a 67.-52 win at Menasha. Joe Desorcy led the way with 18 points, but it wasn't enought to prevent another con- ference loss. The Zephyrs held their IO point edge most of the way. St. John of Little Chute piled up a lead which even a final surge was not good enough to whittle away, and St. Norbert lost another conference game to the tune of 7o-65. joe Pranke led the scorers with 25 points. This loss put the Squires out of the running for the title. In a non-conference tilt, a small but fast Mary- heart team came within a hair's breadth of upsetting the Squires, but lost finally, 68-65. joe Pranke led scoring again with I4 points, with much assistance from the team. St. Norbert evened up a previous defeat when they handed Central Catholic, the league champions, their only conference loss. The Squires were the underdogs, but proved again that they can never be taken lightly on their own floor. The win was a team prod- uct, but joe Desorcy led scoring with I5 points. Final score was 56-48. The State Catholic Invitational Tourney found Notre Dame of Milwaukee tipping the Squires in the opener, 47-43. Chuck Fiss led St. Nor- bert scoring with IO points. The Fox Valley Conference got a boost when St. Mary of Menasha went all the way against the best to cop the state title. al Bud Cccncn Don Anderson Arnie Baugnct 'L Q51 V i Q . QQ S W . Perhaps the reason for this is that receiving it tells the students that the school year has come to an end. This publication is the one thing, other than his own memories, that one can carry with him throughout the years to remind him of the days spent at St. Norbert. The job of pre- paring the yearbook is begun in September and it lasts until the book is sent to press late in the school year. Those working on the staff receive no benefit other than that of personal satisfaction in seeing their work being enjoyed in the hands of the other students. . 4 , , ,K I ,N x vs. ' 4 0 I' Rev. This monthly publication is eagerly looked forward to by the faculty and student body, although few realize the actual amount of work re- quired. The lights burning late in the north tower of the gym during the hustle week before publication speaks for itself. To those who work every month on the staff goes much credit, especially to the moderator, Mr. joseph Zimmer, and the editor, Gerald Hietpas. The paper provides, be- sides general news, an insight into the individual lives of the seniors. This latter feature is most popular among the students. Starting with only a nucleus of two men from last year's team, this year's squad de- veloped into one capable of disposing of their opponents quite impressively. Officers heading this year's club were: Steve Ariens, captain, Stan Smits, secretary, and Ed Weidenfeller, treasurer. l l The choir, under their moderator, Fr. De Leers, has again completed an excellent school year. Although a half credit is issued to the students, the real attraction is the relaxation and feeling of accomplishment for the participants. The results of their prac- tices in the club room were displayed at the Christmas party, where they sang carols. Their prime interest, however, is in liturgical music, in which they do both polyphony and plain song. The group sang at graduation last year, and has been singing the student high Mass regularly each Saturday. They look forward to expansion. Q f . X 6- S Hack row: Schedler, Graff, P. These include ,Joseph Desorcy, Charles Fiss, ,Iohn Gibbs, and Mike Brei, who hold the offices of president, vice-president, sec- retary and treasurer respectively. r 2 if ' l 5 I Page Lu This years Sodality can go down as a most active society in the school. Through the initiative of Father Robert Finnegan it re- ceived the spark to get things done. The pur- pose is a greater devotion to our Blessed Mother, with the motto, To jesus through Mary. They have certainly lived up to this. During Lent they set up vocational exhibits in the classrooms, and collected money for the missions. They also published a daily Mass ordo, and set up holy water fonts. ln outside work the Sodality sponsored a magazine drive, and conducted an essay and poster contest on Catholic Press lvlonth, The Third Order of St. Norbert is the oldest organization of its kind in the Church as well as on the campus. This year. an attempt was made to join forces with the College mem- bers, but the apathy of the older men forced the high school men to 21Ct again as an in- dependent group. The moderator, Father De Leers, strove, by using weekly discussion meetings and daily public prayer. to make the students more aware of their dignity and obligations as Christians, and of the great need in this day for young men of courage who are willing to follow Christ no matter what the -cost may be in goods or reputation. Michael Smith, had a quite successful year. Two general means were used to further the photographic knowledge of the members. Meetings were regularly held with guest speakers to explain some particular feature of the art. In addition, practical ex- perience was gained by the members through actual darkroom work. Some of the pictures in this book are the products of the club mem- bers' efforts. Photography is in itself a fasci- nating hobby, and membership in this club made it more so by teaching the full ex- ploitation of equipment. Now in the second year of its existence, the band is making good progress considering the difficulties involved in its operations. There is very much competition from sports, since the practice times coincide. Band directors have changed frequently. Mr. Ed Kennedy was followed by Tony Darner and john Henze. With high school youths, nothing suc- ceeds like success. There will probably not be wholesale enthusiasm for the band until the pioneers now working so hard get more op- portunity to show what they have learned. When polished performances hit the air, mem- bership will have to be restricted. R Q- ar-4 sr . v. K Y 1 Y OG 'f' , ' Back rour Kane, xl. Piper, Bell, Rataiclmek Second row: Martens, j. johnson, D. The moderator, Father Finnegan, and the president, Roland McFarland, direct a program of monthly meetings involving trades, exhibitions, and mission work, which keep the members interested in stamps. The Crusade for Reverent Language was begun this year by Father Clabots to stimulate the boys to a better use of the gift of speech. It is encouraging to note that the Crusade met with great success. Regular weekly meetings and poster cam- paigns made up most of the organiza- tion's activities. 9 Y lam? M071 .. vfwfazzwwwmwmfw .,.sMmzQWm ...rqcfawiiiemenk Compliments of H. C.
