HE DMASTER'S ADDRESS Thus year's Graduatuon Class - more than most - has a plethora of accomplushments to uts credut In bygone days. uf a mulutary unut excelled un actuon, medals were awarded not to everyone but to a dozen or so unduvuduals - representatuves of an enture group I would luke to do that today - to hand out. so to speak, some medals, stressung that the awards reflect honour to a greater or lesser extent on all eughty students of the Graduatung Class Certaunly a medal must go to Head Boy Robun Baurd personable and fleet of foot - a man of qualrty He led the SMU senuor boys to vrctory un the Greater Vuctorua Hugh School Track Meet and to the Champuonshup of the BC Independent Schools A medal, too, to the Head Gurl Laurel Neul, competent, responsuble and carung, for her edutung of the Yearbook and for organlzung so many school events so well. Chrus Snape's Spuruled Captauncy of the Furst Rugby XV helped turn what mught have been a lacklustre season unto a truumph, leadung to the cuty rugby funals and to the B C Independent Schools Rugby Champuonshup Chrus personally scored 220 pounts Medals must also goto our debaters and actors As representatuves of many who took part un school drama, l'll puck Paul Savulle. Stephen Pettyfer. and Dennus Puedalue and as representatuve debaters, those two polushed and eloquent undrvuduals. James Duffus and Sam Malun, both of whom together wuth Tuen FothergullPayne of Alberta have won mauor awards to Queens one of the funest of Canaduan unuversutues James and Tren have both won substantual scholarshups whule Sam us one of three Queen's Natuonal Bursary award wunners chosen from the provunce of B C Unuversuty awards such as these are not easuly earned or lughtly guven and they reflect credut on everyone assocuated wuth St Muchaels Unuversuty chool. most of all on the teachers I mentuoned the boys' senuor track team top un the cuty and furst among the B C Boys' Independent schools The SMU gurls had thus dusadvantage there were only forty-one Grade XI and XII gurls - fortyfone from whuch a senuor track team could be chosen Yet our gurls ranked thurd un Greater Vuctorua competung wuth all the senuor hugh gurlS' track teams and they took on and defeated un track and fueld all seven other ln- dependent schools' gurls track teams un the provunce A medal. then, to Tammy Toone. Captaun of the SMU Gurls' Track and Fueld team Tammy wont mund sharung that medal wuth another runner of note the elfervescent and urrepressuble Yvonne Coady. who thus year completed two 26fmuIe marathon runs, un Vancouver and Vuctorua V a remarkable performance That's ten medals two more to go For sheer all-rOund courage and unvolvement, a medal must be awarded to a quuet. multu-talented unduvudual who represented the school un soccer and hockey teams. who was the puano accompanust for the chour, who played the organ un chapel. and who unsusted on runnung for our gurls' track team un a 200 metre race- whuch she won - desprte havung what proved to be a 103' temperature I refer to a BCTV Scholarshup holder who has worked hard, played hard. and made an exceptuonal all-round contrubutuon to SMU Alexandra Rueche Funally, a glutterung medal to Davud Wungrove. an eught-year veteran ofthe school. a debater, actor, and thrnker. who has won a scholarshup, valued at 520,000 over the next tour years. to Harvard uThat's SMU's second Harvard Scholarshup won un two years.l No Graduatuon Class. of course. us perfect It was umpossuble thus year to get all the members ofthe class assembled un one place. at one tume, wuthout some notable absentees and late-comers There were. l'm sorry to admut. a small number who resusted to the end all efforts by theur teachers to persuade them to establush a close, fruendly and rewardung relatuonshup wuth school books. That doesn't alter the fact that a hugh proportuon of thus year's graduatuon class have been adult and responsuble un attutude and effort, SMU next year wull muss havung an Ellus un uts mudst Jeremy. the last of the Ellus trunuty, luke hus brothers before hum. has been a furst- class cutuzen SMU wull also be sorry to see lrwun Cunnungham. the fourth and last of the gutted Cunnungham clan. leave the school tTwo of lrwun's three older brothers are un meducal schools and the thurd us on hus wayl V We wull surely muss next year our Grade 12 overseas students who are graduatung It would be hard to thunk of any funer representatuves ol theur countrues than people ofthe calrbre of Mehrdad Mohtadu of Iran mow of Vuctorual. Muchael Ho or Eugene Loch of Hong Kong Enruque RUIZ of Nucaragua or Khalud Nahhas ofthe Unuted Arab Emurates, tl name these to represent alll. Havung saud that. I would luke to thank those unduvuduals who by theur consustentcheerlulness.frler1dIlr'lesS.ef1thuSlaSm and wunnung attutude to lufe have brought uoy to our communuty As one example whenever there was an outdoor expedutuon. a dance. a party or a school prouect. Gulluan Hughes was enthusuastucally unvolved She really belueves un what the school stands for A boarder from Courtenay. she has been three years at SMU and her commutment has been total She represents all who wull be mussed not because of any one spectacular accomplushment but because they brought uoy to the school by theur presence Heres a quotatuon I came across recently Joy does not mean ruotous glee. but ut does mean that purposeful employment of energy un a self-chosen enterpruse Joy means prude and self-confudence Joy means communucatuon and cooperatuon wuth others based on delught un theur company and your own ut means havung somethung genuune to guve To all the young men and womeru of the 1981 Graduatung Class. who have somethung genuune to guve, I wush great loy un the years ahead John Schaffter.
