The Class of 1945 selected the name, CLIP- PER, for its annual. The following is taken from the 1945 CLIPPER: The title Clipper was decided upon because of the part played by St. Michaels in the bringing forth and manufac- ture of those fast cargo vessels of the last cen- tury. This name has now become synonymous with yearbook at St. Michaels High School. The staff of this tenth edition thinks the name was an exceedingly wise selection. In volume two of Tilghman' s HISTORY OF TALBOT COUN- TY MARYLAND 1661- 1861 there canbe found the following: A class of vessels which at one time possessed a world-wide reputation for their sailing qualities, and for the gracefulness of their lines, and which acquired their name rather from the port out of which they sailed than from the place of their construction, probably owed their origin to the shipyards of St. Michaels , and the skill of the shipwrights of the same town. These were those Baltimore Clippers . . . The Staff of the 1955, CLIPPER is grateful to the staff of the 1945 CLIPPER for launching the ST. MICHAELS HIGHXSCHOOL CLIPPER. 2
