We are proud to have the distinc- tion of being the 50th class to graduate from S. M. H. S. With this fact serving as an inspiration we have endeavored to make The 54 Purple and Gold a mark of fifty years of progress in Qt. Marys High School. The Future Farmers of America is the largest farm boy organization in the world with members in all 48 states as well as Puerto Rico and Hawaii. It was organized in 1928 by Henry C. Groseclose, Ir. and his associates. In 1953, the United States Post Office Department honored the FFA Organization on its 25th Anniversary with a commemorative Stamp. The St. Marys Chapter has in operation at present one of the largest Chapter Pig Rings in the State. By this token, the chapter members introduced the first Yorkshire Hogs in Pleasants County. The main purpose for which the organization was formed was to develop agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. This goal is reached by members' participation in Public Speaking, Parliamentary Procedure, and various other contests. Activities planned this year by the local chap- ter are a television broadcast, radio broadcast, tree planting project, parent-son ban- quet, and Food Project for School Hot Lunch Program. Mutt Reed banged over for two touchdowns and an extra point while Schell passed to Creek for the last TD. The Blue Devils stayed at home the next week to take on the Ironmen of Benwood Union. The Devils just couldn't hold the Ironmen. During the final quarter Mutt Reed pushed over the Devils' only touchdown with Renner scoring the extra point the game ending 37-7. St. Marys just cou1dn't seem to get going as Marietta trounced them 39-0. This is the iirst time since 1950 that the Blue Devils have been shut out. The unbeaten Sistersville Tigers came to St. Marys and handed them their third defeat of the season by a score of 26-6. Mutt Reed scored the only touchdown and Renner's kick went wide. The squad then journeyed to take on theCardinals of Pennsboro. The Cardinals' line proved to be too heavy as the Blue Devils came out on the short end of the stick 21-6. Reed managed to push over the Devils' sole touchdown but Renner's kick went wide. SEASOH 'S REV EW Refusing to say die the Blue Devils next went to Harrisville where they humbled the Gators by a score of 14-0. John Renner starredinthis game by scoring both touchdowns and extra points. This game broke a four game losing streak. The Blue Devils then dropped a 20-13 decision to Magnolia. Tackle Mike Webb made both of the touchdowns on Golden Eagles' fumbles. The kick was good for the extra point. The Blue Devils played a stubborn game as they surprised a large crowd at West Union when they tied the Doddridge Bulldogs 7-7. John Renner scored the touchdown in the opening quarter with Schell pushing over for the conversion. This was one of the Devils' best games. The Wellsburg eleven came to St. Marys and clobbered the Blue Devils 38-0. Schell played a brilliant offensive game as he was the only one able to gain yardage. The Devils moved the ball to the 5-yard line once but lost it on dovms. This was St. Marys' sixth loss. St. Marys dropped their last game on ArmisticeDay to a strong Calhoun eleven by the score of 27-13. Torn Schell got his varsity touchdown ona90 yard run. The other TD was made by a pass combination from Reed to Renner in the end zone with only three seconds left. The kick was good for the extra point. This brought the season to a close for theSt. Marys Blue Devils with a record of 2 wins, 1 tie, and 7 losses. ST.
