Youth Strives for Personal Holiness Maria Costa explains to the officers the purpose of the guard of honor. ll. to r.l: Cenciicyc Morris, treasurer: ,lames Lovelace, president: Sharon Lanigan, vice-president: Cerald O'Rourlie, secretary: Maria Costa To Christ through Maryf, These four words contain the purpose of the Sodality of Our Lady. Through devotion to Mary the Sodalists strive to become closer to her Son. The Sodality, under the capable direction of Sister Paulette, the moderator. undertakes many activities during the year to fulfill this purpose. The monthly meetings include recitation of the Little Office, panel discussions on topics of inter- est to Catholic teenagers, meditations, and an oc- casional guest speaker such as Father May. On the third Sunday of each month the Sodalists at- tend 8:45 Mass and receive Holy Communion in a body. Committees such as the Eucharistic Com- mittee encourage the members to avail them- selves of the Church's means of holiness. Some of the highlights of the year for the Sodalists are the annual Communion breakfast, the sponsor- ship of the Christmas ball, the ceremony for the reception of the probationers. and the beautiful May Crowning. Social and religious activities, forming the lvasis of a good life, are both to he found in the Sodality. From this organization the students of St. lVlary's obtain spiritual comfort for the present, and a deeply rooted love and devotion for Christ and Mary, which will malfe them bet- ter Catholics for the future. De- voutly singing the l,itany. a long procession of white came slowly down the aisle. For St. Maryis Sodalists this was the day of days, the day on which each one could participate in the public crowning of the queen of his heartvthe Blessed Virgin Mary. This day had heen set aside by the Sodalists especially for Mary, and excitedly they had prepared for it and looked forward to it. As they sang the beautiful hymns of praise to Mary, Thou Who Art So Fairw and uliail lmmacu- latafl each one silently renewed his love and de- votion to Mary, His Mother. Finally the long-awaited moment arrived. All eyes turned toward the statue. and a hushed. hreathless silence fell over the entire Church as the queen, Betty Neugzebauer, ascended the steps and reverently placed the jeweled crown on Mary -'Queen of Heaven and Earth. Then solemnly, the Sodalists recited the Act of Consecration, pledging their fidelity to their queen. To the traditional hymn, 't0h Mary, con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have re- course to theef' the queen and her court slowly left the sanctuary, returning to their places. Each one. feeling a tinge of joy and happiness after participating in the heautiful ceremony of the coronation of his heavenly mother and highest ideal. sang the MO Salutarisf' Wllantum Ergo and finally 'Alioly God, We Praise Thy Namef, Betty Neugehauer crowns Mary, our Mother.
