'4Those who instruct others unto .lustice shall shine as stars for all eternity. For fifty years Sister Constance has patiently taught little children and started young souls on the road to heaven. After her profession, Sister taught kindergarten at St. Patrickis School in Buffalo. Then she was sent to Kingston, Jamaica, where she labored for twenty-two years and endeared herself to all her pupils by her graciousness and kindness. After her return to the United States, Sister came to Cort- land, where she has served for seventeen vears initiatin a whole , g generation into a happy Catholic school life. On this your golden jubilee, Sister Constance, we, your former pupils, offer you a golden rosary of prayer. U01 Faith of Youth Youth. dt-spite its restless pave, has moments of deep spiritu ihty. In faith, youth cliscmfers the purpost- of lite and thc- umm alt its pruhlvnts. t H1 Youth Strives for Personal Holiness Maria Costa explains to the officers the purpose of the guard of honor. ll. to r.l: Cenciicyc Morris, treasurer: ,lames Lovelace, president: Sharon Lanigan, vice-president: Cerald O'Rourlie, secretary: Maria Costa To Christ through Maryf, These four words contain the purpose of the Sodality of Our Lady. Through devotion to Mary the Sodalists strive to become closer to her Son. The Sodality, under the capable direction of Sister Paulette, the moderator. undertakes many activities during the year to fulfill this purpose. The monthly meetings include recitation of the Little Office, panel discussions on topics of inter- est to Catholic teenagers, meditations, and an oc- casional guest speaker such as Father May. On the third Sunday of each month the Sodalists at- tend 8:45 Mass and receive Holy Communion in a body. Committees such as the Eucharistic Com- mittee encourage the members to avail them- selves of the Church's means of holiness. Some of the highlights of the year for the Sodalists are the annual Communion breakfast, the sponsor- ship of the Christmas ball, the ceremony for the reception of the probationers. and the beautiful May Crowning. Social and religious activities, forming the lvasis of a good life, are both to he found in the Sodality. From this organization the students of St. lVlary's obtain spiritual comfort for the present, and a deeply rooted love and devotion for Christ and Mary, which will malfe them bet- ter Catholics for the future. De- voutly singing the l,itany. a long procession of white came slowly down the aisle. For St. Maryis Sodalists this was the day of days, the day on which each one could participate in the public crowning of the queen of his heartvthe Blessed Virgin Mary. This day had heen set aside by the Sodalists especially for Mary, and excitedly they had prepared for it and looked forward to it. As they sang the beautiful hymns of praise to Mary, Thou Who Art So Fairw and uliail lmmacu- latafl each one silently renewed his love and de- votion to Mary, His Mother. Finally the long-awaited moment arrived. All eyes turned toward the statue. and a hushed. hreathless silence fell over the entire Church as the queen, Betty Neugzebauer, ascended the steps and reverently placed the jeweled crown on Mary -'Queen of Heaven and Earth. Then solemnly, the Sodalists recited the Act of Consecration, pledging their fidelity to their queen. To the traditional hymn, 't0h Mary, con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have re- course to theef' the queen and her court slowly left the sanctuary, returning to their places. Xlil Youth Finds Solace in the Mass Father lVlay distributes Holy Communion to the seniors in convent chapel. Early in the morning on the feast of St. Joseph, the seniors entered the brilliantly lighted con- vent chapel for their annual Mass. This was their Hrst experience at hearing Mass in the con- vent, and they were deeply impressed by the quiet solitude and beauty that surrounded them. Soon Father May, preceded by Charles Sheri- dan as acolyte, entered the chapel and lVlass be- gan. Throughout this sublime act of worship, the seniors raised their voices, singing hymns of adoration and praise to their Cod, so near to them. After receiving Holy Communion, they ex- perienced a deep feeling of inner peace and close- ness to their Creator, so often experienced after receiving this sacrament. ln thanksgiving for all the graces and bless- ings they had received during their years at St. Maryis, the seniors at the end of Mass again raised their voices in 4'Holy God We Praise Thy Namef' Thus, with this solemn event, another highlight of the year came a close, and the seniors became more aware of the peace and con- tentment found in their faith. For twenty-five years, Coach Martin has faithfully inspired conlidence, perseverance, sportsmanship into the minds and hearts of each boy who has ever had the privilege of working under him. For all this and in appreciation for the many sacrifices he has made for us, We want to express gratitude and affection for our beloved coach, Mr. Robert Martin. With another football season challenging them, St. lVlary,s Martinmen set out with plenty of fight and spirit. They were determined to do their best in the three games Father llrumm, the athletic director, had scheduled. On September 23, the lVlartinmen encountered the strong Waterloo team on a muddy Randall Field. Although the courageous Saints held the visitors scoreless in the first half, they were final- ly overcome by a merciless onslaught which left them beaten by the score of fl-5 to 0. Four weeks later, on October Zi, the Saints took on DeSales of Geneva. Unfortunately their luck was no better at Geneva than it had been at home. Again a defeat, and again the humiliating score of I-5 to lt. This made two losses, but also H91 two more games of experience for the freshmen. The Saints went into the next game with an especially strong desire to beat their opponents: the boys from Auburn. ln the Mount Carmel of Auburn game the first half was likewise discour- aging with a score of 33 to 0. During the third quarter the Saints held their ground but were un- able to score, although they worked the hall to the Auburn ten yard line. The opponents scored two more touchdowns in the finial period to make the score 45 to 0 again. Although the record does not look too im- pressive, the Blue and Cold of St. lVlaryls fought valiantly and refused to give up when the odds were against them. The members of the team are eagerly looking forward to the I957 season. Blue and Gold Cagers landing fl. to r.l: lloach .lim Kasey, .lohn McEvoy. Robert Dowd, Robert 0'l3rien, William Bulger. Ronald Porter, Karl Heim The l956-57 haskethall season proved to be a successful one for St. lVlary7s. The squad, con- sisting of mostly juniors and sophomores, gained valuable experience and proved themselves to be hustlers again and again. Each player showed himself to he a scorer and rebounder and gave to the game everything he had while he was on the court. Dave Tucker led the Saints in scoring, and Pat Ryan proved himself a rebounder and a shooter. Ron Porter, Bob Dowd, Tom Casey and Charles Moulton made up the other members who fought valiantly for the Blue and Gold. More than once, hecause of illnesses, injuries, ineligibilities, the team experienced a shortage of players. Coach Casey then found it neecssary to draft players from the Jay Vees, and each time these players came through for him. Bill Bulger, Karl Heim, ,lack Hayes and Mike Morgan filled in ahly for the Saints and gave the others a lift when the tension was beginning to mount. Next year, Dave Tucker, Tom Casey and Bob 0,Brien will be lost to the team. These men con- tributed their services faithfully while they were in high school. 5 30 ltis all yours, Tuclcerll Couple Strategy lVlary's . . .... -15 lVlary's . . .... l6 llflaryis .. ...ISI Wlaryis . . .... 625 Nlarylz . . Dexter, Frank Taylor, Nam-y llwyer, Sharon Lanigan, Kathy Karam, Katherine Stack. When the stage lights went on, silence envel- oped the auditorium. lmmediately, the curtain opened--This was the final presentation of the senior play. uldoom for One More. As the words, g'Poppy missed the 5-Si, began the first act, the seniors realized that this was the last time for the well rehearsed line. After five weeks of strenuous preparation under the compe- tent direction of Sister M. Merici, the cast had finally reached that long-awaited night. From the very beginning, the audience re- sponded enthusiastically to the warm portrayal of family devotion of the Rose family. It high- lighted the role of a Inotheris love and under- standing in dispelling fears and building confi- dence in her teenage children. Nancy Dwyer, as the mother, gave a heartwarming interpretation of this diflicult role with sympathetic tenderness that captured the hearts of the audience. Through all manner of dilliculties, including 34 the sudden death of her self-sacrificing husband, she maintained a quiet dignity and composure that exemplified a woman of faith. Despite these difliculties, there was always room in the heart and home of Mother Rose for one more homeless child. Likewise, the children of the Rose family of- fered a study in contrasting characters. Kather- ine Stack supplied a light touch as the spirited thirteen-year old Teensie, youngest of the chil- dren. Of more serious mien, was her older adopted sister Janey, a shy and sensitive orphan, played by Kathleen Karam. Last, but not least. appeared the crippled Jimmy John, the disillu- sioned orphan at war with the world, until brought under the inHuence of Mother Rose. A moving comedy, with undertones of deep in- spirational values, Room for One Morel' pro- vided an appropriate setting for the dramatic tal- ents of the Class of 1957. aW.,,f R l'uppv Iuoks on as his lmrmnl l'iIPt'l'i-lliiy pays lin- pvnully for lllliiliilN'SS. il:-1-li kilflllll. ,Iohn 'I'mnm-y. ixaitlu-rim' Him-k. 4,z1mle- Zililllfii Shnrrm idllliglllll. i'il'illlix 'lkiylor ,limmy ,Iuhn refuses any nmrv Finan- vial uid frmn the- Nose family. il tu r.l: .Imna-Q l,uxr-iam-. CHRISTS HAND ON EARTH These are the hands that lift the Host, These hands are blest by the Holy Ghost. These hands are raised to blot out Adam's sing And now heavenly joys begin. These hands are near at time of death To renew graces at our last breath. These hands join man and maid for life To serve Cod as husband and wife. Without these hands to guide the way, Some cherished souls would go astray. So, God, we thank Thee with heart and soul, For these priestly hands that aid and console. -CAROLE ZAHARIS Class of '57 E521 ,,,pplH ' Seniors wgiislel' their 4-lmiw in lllf- Nui-Inline-I' vie-vliull. li. Aware of the added dignity this title carried with it, we tried our best to live up to it and to make our junior year a memorable one. We found that our schoolwork was becoming harder as we became enveloped in a maze of trigonometry, biology, and French ll. Nevertheless we found time to cheer at a game or have fun at dances and par- ties. Now as we leave the junior class, we look forward eagerly to the last step of our journey through St. Maryis and our senior year.
