This living begins with our morning offering when we unite our daily tasks, our joys, our sorrows. and our prayers, for the in- tention for which every priest the world over offers his Mass of the day. Since we have attempted to parallel our activities at Saint lVlary's with the various parts of the Sacrifice of the Mass, we feel that we can truly say that we live the Mass. The lack of material made it seem unwise to undertake a full schedule this year. To cope with this problem, a special meeting was held. Father Drumm and Coach Martin laid the facts before the boys and their parents for careful consideration. Each issue was weighed thoroughly until a vote was called for. It was decided to play one game and on the out- come of this game would depend the future of football at St. lVlary,s. On a stormy Sunday in October, the fired-up Blue and Cold squad trotted out onto the turf at Randall field. The whole first half remained scoreless as both teams fought doggedly for each 0 yard. The second half was a different story, for lack of depth on St. lVlary's bench was beginning to tell. The linal gun ended on a l9-6 verdict for St. Francis De Sales of Geneva. Although the Saints did not win the game, they showed fight and spirit which surprised everyone, including their opponents. The most important result, however, was the fact that they played convincingly enough to preserve for their suc- cessors the right to don the familiar blue and gold uniforms. A final debt of gratitude must be paid to those parents and faculty members who gave the boys on this year's team the opportunity to light to retain football as a major part of the schoolis athletic program. , Af Haurmig 151415 Alt Hp ll to VJ: Elaine Houlillan, Nlill'lf'llf' llugnmunn. Immediately a voice from hackstageeconveyed the seriousness of the judge who advised the jury to 'cdeliberate honestly and thoughtfullyi' during the mur- der trial. Janet Cashion, although never seen, gave a forceful portrayal of the judge. Then the guard, played by Edward Mc- Evoy, entered the empty stage and voiced an opinion which almost every juror held 26 L'He doesn't stand a chance! Following the entrance of the jurors. a story unfolded involving a hoy who had heen accused of the murder of his father. In the face of seemingly insurmountable evi- dence, juror number eight stood fearlessly alone for she doubted the boy's guilt. Be- cause of her courage, number eight received support from others, but this support see- sawed when new evidence was presented. Finally after producing a switch knife iden- tical to the murderous weapon, re-enacting the crime and narrowly escaping an attempt on her own life by an irrational juror, juror eight proved convincingly to the others that the boy was innocent. It was apparent that most of the jurors had not considered any reasonable doubt they may have had but merely went along with the opinion of the majority. This production possessed not only a tense and exciting plot, but also excellent character analyses, for as the play pro- gressed each jury member disclosed his character through his speech and actions. From the very beginning, juror number eight took a stand in favor of the defend- ant. She bravely stood amid alternate times of support and opposition. This part was ex- cellently portrayed by Katharine Hayes. As her bitter antagonist, Marlene Hagmann pro- jected herself into a most diliicult role. She played juror number three, a woman stub- bornly bent on conviction, loud-mouthed, over-bearing, and inconsistent, so convinc- ingly that the audience vicariously experi- enced the attempt she made on number eight's life. Robert Jubinville, as juror num- ber four, portrayed a well-educated juror who, though he tried to be impartial, was convinced that the boy was guilty. Joseph Anderson gave a convincing portrayal of a petty, dogged foreman whose decisions were influenced by the majority. J urors two, live, six, and nine, who were often swayed by the more aggressive members, were well-de- picted by Jane Ott, Sheila O'Mara, Mar- garet Woods, and Renee Skehan respective- ly. Susan Roark was excellent in portraying number twelve, a self-important, career woman who begrudged the time she spent on the jury. As supporters of juror three, Mary Anne Morton as number ten and Teresa Kerwin as juror seven were bigoted and often belligerent. Josephine Natoli played number eleven, a fair-minded immigrant, who tried to make the other members realize that it was a 'fprivilege more than a duty to serve on the jury. uTwelve Angry J urors had already been tested on television audiences of the nation and had been given an award as an out- standing dramatic presentation. And no wonder, for Reginald Rose, the author, cre- ated a masterpiece of interwoven tenseness and suspense. His character delineations were excellent and the theme of Hreasonable doubt had never been more poignantly presented. After weeks under Sister Merici's skillful direction, the seniors felt, without a doubt, as conhdent as the original cast. The inval- uable assistance of the stage crew and prompters also made the production a success. With the applause of the audience ring- ing in their ears, the seniors enjoyed that satisfaction which comes with the successful completion of a never-to-be-forgotten expe- rience. ll.. to r.J: Janet Cashion, Sheila 0'Mara, Josephine Natoli This is the apartment in which the killing took place. These setbacks, tragic at the time, served as an impetus to work more diligently as the dead- line loomed before them. Forgetting the rest ofthe world, his server responds, 'tAd Deum qui laetificat juven- tutem meumiTo Cod who giveth joy to my youth. At this point, an altar boy hecomes greater than the angels, for he serves a priest in the Mass, fully realizing that he is living his finest hour. Under the capable direction of Father Quirk, the Saint lVlary's altar hoys learn the required Latin responses and the correct procedure for serving the priests at the various liturgical serv- ices. This year they were privileged to par- ticipate in the night services of Holy Week and to serve at the beautiful Midnight Mass on Holy Saturday. In November they were allorded the once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in the Centennial observance of Saint lVlary's parish. Each of the altar boys has the distinct advan- tage of gaining a deeper understanding of his re- ligion and forming a close relationship with the priests of the parish. 'llheresia What makes the Senior Communion Breakfast so memorable? Why does that one morning stand out so vividly in every graduateis mind? We finally answered our own questions. Early on a brisk April morning our class eagerly entered Saint lVlary,s Convent to attend Mass in the ex- quisite convent chapel. Father May and Donal Spaulding leave the sanctu- ary after Mass. ' it Undoubtedly each one of us felt our nearness to the altar of God, the elation of blending our own voices with the strength and beauty of the organ music, and the thrill of kneeling at the im- maculate white and gold altar rail to receive the Body of Christ. T00 soon Father was administer- ing the last blessing to us, and we were filing out of the beautiful chapel that was perfection itself. The Mass we had just attended brought us a feel- ing of contentment and peace. As guests of the Sisters, with our pastor, Father May, we were served breakfast in the refectory. Before we knew it we were singing all the songs we had learned through the years. Eleven a. m. found us thrilling to Mario Lanzais recording of the Student Prince in the sunroom. One more senior event was over, but what a beautiful mem- ory it left behindl Now, we leave the exciting an- ticipation of the Senior Communion Breakfast to those who follow us.
