Now the day had ar- rived, and each senior experienced a deep feeling of peace as he entered the House of God. Un this special occasion the marble altar, ablaze with candles, was adorned with red and white carnations, the class colors. The hushed silence was broken as Father May intoned the prayer at the begin- ginning of lVlass, Mlntroibo ad altare Deifi and the altar boy responded with: ttAd Deum qui laetificat juventutem meamf, Truly Cod has given joy to the seniors, for no day passes without their experiencing that joy for which the altar boy petitions. To express their feeling of gratitude, the seniors raised their voices in C-od,s praise as they sang the beautiful hymns: HO, Blessed Saint ,losephw and 4'lVlother Be- lovedf, After Communion with eyes raised to the Tabernacle, every senior asked Cod to bless and guide Him as He had done in the past. Thus it was with a deep and profound feeling of regret that the seniors left the tranquility of the convent chapel. Once more they would venture into the world strengthened with their Mass and Commu- 11ion. With them, however, those precious minutes would remain always. The Sodality sponsors a Sodality Com- munion Breakfast, a formal ball, and many mixers throughout the year to enable the Sodal- ists to assemble together and enjoy themselves. The retreat master, Father Edward Hart- nett C.S.C. began the retreat Monday morning hy officiating at the Holy Sacrifice of the lVlass. During the retreat, the students arrived at a firmer understanding of their faith, through dis- cussions, rosaries. stations of the cross, and hen- edictions, in addition to lVlass and Communion. ln the times allotted for meditation and spiritual reading. the retreatants had an opportunity to think and read ahout the mysteries and doctrines of their religion. Perhaps the idea most emphatically stressed during retreat was the importance of the proper reception of the Sacrament of Penance. Father Hartnett with great clarity counseled all to think about the necessity of receiving the Sacrament of penance in the way Cod intended it to he received. AT RETREAT . . :ss 3 With a new perspective towards Cod, them- selves, and their religion, the students ended their retreat Wednesday with Mass and Communion. H41 The Grand March at Paris Au Printemps Paris Au Printempsi' gave the ,lunior-Senior Prom a very Parisian atmosphere. As the dancers entered under the Arc de Triomphe, they felt as if they were about to step out onto a Paris roof- top overlooking that bright, gay, and romantic city below. One side of the gym gave the illusion of a starlit skyline of Paris, while the other offered French scenes under a gaily covered awning rep- resenting a typical French cafe along the Champs-Elysees. Waiters and waitresses dressed in French peasant costumes served refreshments at the tables in the sidewalk cafe. Likewise the mem- bers of John lVIcNeil's orchestra carried out the Parisian theme by their attire of jaunty berets AND FROLIC and silk scarves. As the dedicated strains of Melody of Lovell Hlled the gym, the elated seniors felt on top of world, for this was truly their night and their song. The highlight of the evening was the Grand March led by Susan West and senior class presi- dent, William Loftus. This proved to be a kalei- doscope of color as the gay dancers promenaded before their admiring parents. All too soon came the notes of L'Cood Night Sweetheartn and 4'Springtime in Paris was over. It was a prom never to be forgotten, but rather to remembered forever as one of the most treasured memories of their years at Saint Maryis. Suddenly the spectators nerc atlorded a glimpse of the gay twenties, as the cast garhed in the nuddy blouse and short skirt ot the l'lappcr lfraf' hrokc into the spotlight singing Play A Simple ltlelodyfi As the never to he forgotten moments sped hy and the familiar strains of 'sour Show ls Over? were heard, the audience hurst into applause in appreciation of a tloorshow that represented MAY WE HARE tw weeks of hard work on the part of the class and their capable director, Sr. Paulette. Thus the brain child of those juniors of a decade ago remains alive for another year, and undouhtedly Cafe Trcs Chic will go on as long: as there is a St. Maryis. ln candleliglht l. to r: ltollcrt k1't'Qlilll. Moving into Auhnrn with the lirnl intention of turning in an upsvt over thvir arvh rival Holy lfainily, the Saints 1-nm-ountPrPCl a stiff rvvcption. l ro1n the lmeginning of play thv Gaels controlled the hall game and managed to svorc- in every pvriocl. Thr-ir first tally was scat up after a 58 yard niarrih through lhv wavering Blue and Gold ch-- fvnsc-. A well met-literl pass-lateral play caught the lVlartin-nwn oil' halance and the score rr-afl O to U. The try for the extra point was successful and from that point on the Saints were in for a rough afternoon. Late in the second quarter, a fumble was recovered by Saint Mary's at the midfield stripe and the ball was moved to the 20 before Holy Family took over on downs. Again in possession, the Gaels swiftly went for their sec- ond T.D. , closing the half, 14-0. During the third and fourth periods the Holy Family team continued to chew up yardage, mov- ing eighty yards in five plays on a rampaging drive into the end zone. The lack of depth on the Blue and Gold bench was beginning to tell, and the fourth score came when the home team went to the air, heaving three successive completed passes. On the following kickoff the Saints brought the pigskin back to their own 35 yard line only to fumble, enabling the Auburnites to cross the goal line for the fifth time. When the final whistle sounded, the score stood at 39-0 in favor of Holy Family marking the Saints first de- feat of the season. Still undaunted and looking for their first win, the St. Mary's chargers went into Geneva to tangle with St. Francis DeSales High as well as Hurricane Hazel in a night game under the lights of Shuron Park. Hampered by the sloppy playing conditions from the opening of play, neither team threatened any potential scoring drives in the first period. During the second quarter the Genevans started to alternate their line play with end runs and trap plays down the middle and as a result piled up 13 big points. By the time the second half was under way, the Mar- tinmen, outplayed on the wind swept field, found themselves behind 19-0. Midway through the final stage, the scoring-minded host, coupled with the elements, proved too much to handle, and the Blue and Gold after gaining possession were unable to capitalize on an offensive ground march that was interrupted several times by the Hickering are lights. As the contest ended, the mud-soaked players jogged to the dressing room leaving the desolate field to the remaining furies of Hazel.,' Winding up the season, the Saints invaded Waterloo to engage a talented array of Black and Orange gridders. In the opening period of play, the home team, working out of their single wing variation, crossed the goal stripe twice. Relent- lessly the stunned Martinmen surged back with a 99 scoring drive for their first tally of the game. After the conversion, and following the kickoff, the Waterloo Club opened another suc- cessful march into the end zone and at half time the Blue and Gold were on the low side of a 19 to 7 score. Early in the third quarter a fumble by St. Mary's was recovered by Waterloo on the hosts' 4-3 yard line and once more the strong pony backfield passed and scampered its way to pay dirt. Toward the end of the final quarter, ham- pered by both injuries and penalties, the Saints found themselves back on their own 28 but in possession of the pigskin. With only minutes to play the tough Waterloo line -was finally cracked by the Irish forward wall. As a clincher, the Martin men unleashed one of their backs for a 72 yard jaunt up the middle. The remaining con- fiict yielded little yardage for either eleven and the Cortlandites were forced to settle with a 31- 13 finish. , Where's my interference? yells Spike.
