Dedication 0 Immaculate Mary, most perfect and pure of all God's creatures, you are the model and inspira- tion of all men.. You are the protector and defender of the virtues of youth. You are the refuge of sin- nersg you are the comforter of the afflictedg you are the mediatrix of all graces. '6You are all beautiful, O Maryg You are the gloryg You are the joyg You are the honor of our people. To you, Mary, our Mother, in this year dedi- cated to you, we the seniors at St. Mary's humbly and devoutly offer you our 1954 Per Annos. E41 1' 4' in n, ish. We sing of a maiden . . . . of whom Cod spoke to the serpent in the garden of Eden: HI shall put enmity between thee and the woman and thy seed and her seed, she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heelf, - . . . who was born of humble parents, Anne and Joachim, . . . who fell in love at an early age, and pledged her whole being, heart, mind, body, and soul, to Him, her Divine Love. ' . . . who is the glorious ideal of every man, woman, and child. We sing of a maiden . . . . who, with deep humility, replied to Gabriel: Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to thy word. . . . who brought forth the Son of God, at midnight in Bethlehem, in piercing cold. . . . who graciously fulfilled the lowly duties of grinding meal and carrying water. . . . whose heart was pierced with a sword when her Son, at twelve, was lost in Jerusalem. We sing of a maiden . . . . who watched Him go away but did not ask to follow Himg . . . who looked deep into the eyes of her Divine Son as He journeyed on the long road to Cal- vary, . . . who stood, heartbroken but silent, at the foot of the Cross, . . . who received the lacerated Body of her Son to soothe and caress Him for the last time. We sing of a maiden . . . , whom Saint John saw in a vision, a woman that wore the sun for her mantle, with the moon under her feet, and a crown of twelve stars about her head. . . . who is hailed by poet and peasant, painter and prince. . . . through whom all the graces of redemption flow to the world. . . . who will plead for us, her children, at the hour of our death. The UeSales eleven opened the game in the first quarter with a 50 yard touchdown run. and scored the extra point. The second quarter saw the host cluh add another seven points, with the clock reading If to It at intermission. With neither team heing ahle to score in the third period. Geneva opened the fourth quarter with its devastating at- tack hy scoring four touchdowns to the Saints only score hy an end run hy Jerry Grace. while .lim Mc- Dermott dived over for the extra point. The final score proclaimed the DeSales cluh the victor hy a margin of S53-7. ST. lVIARY'S vs. WATERTOWN Following the defeat at Geneva, the Saints were confronted with the task of stopping the power- laden Immaculate Heart of Watertown. l.H.A. opened the game in true fashion hy scoring in the first and second periods. The half time score read I3-fl. ln the third quarter the Blue and Gold offense started moving. and. after picking up four first downs, ,lim lVlcllermott circled his own right end for 25 yards and a tally. The point was good. Fight- ing hard hut heing set hack hy penalties, the lrish lost possession of the hall. During the last few minutes of play. Watertown scored on a 51 yard run. The final score read l.H.A. 19, St. lVlary,s 7. ST. lVlARY'S vs. WATERl.O0 The Saints traveled to Waterloo for the final of their 1953 season. The Orange hig eleven opened up with a hard passing attack which gave them two tallies in the hrst period. The teams hattled evenly in the second quarter as the Blue and Gold failed to get under motion. ln the third quarter. Waterloo scored on a quick series of short passes. and upped their lead to 20 points. The fourth quarter found the Irish fighting for possession of the hall: hilt he- fore they did, the Orange and Black pushed over another score. St. lWary's then opened a H9 yard march from their ovxn nine to the Waterloo two, hut then lost the hall on downs as the game ended with the Saints howing to a 27-U defeat. Although the scores of this foothall season ap- pear unfavoralile. they do not tell the complete story of the fighting spirit so traditional of St. Maryis teams. which this present team did not lack. It can he justly said that the present team rushed in where heavier teams feared to tread. At this time we should pay trihute to the seniors: Cap- tain ,Iim lVlcUermott. lioh Houlihan. ,loe Nlcfluire, ,lim Keegan. jerry Grace, and John Snyder, who will he lost to St. Mary's hy graduation. For sixteen years he labored diligently and unceasingly to provide St. lVlary's with winning teams, and to impart to his proteges some of the knowledge he had ob- tained through past experience. Not only did he stress the tangible aspects of the game, but more important, the intangi- ble ones, such as: sportsmanship, manliness, and fair play. So proficient was he in his deal- I 41 ings with youth that his 1937 team was selected to participate in the Parochial League Tournament held at Chicago. His past record of wins, offsetting defeats, stands as convinc- ing evidence of his endless achievements. In addition to his work at the school, he also coached the Holy Name basketball team. Former graduates and friends presented Deke with a wristwatch and an appropriate- ly autographed basketball as mementoes of their esteem. J Our Junior Red Cross Sin s . . . Dillingham Standing ll. to r.l: J. Snyder, K. 0'Mara, J. Mc-Cuire, S. Brookins, J. Keegan People who attended the performance of HA Little Honey in St. lVlary's High School had a pleasant tin1e of it, for they were witnessing a com- edy which often happens in many homes. The entire Milton household had a mission to fulfill: to see Di- ana married to Tom Corning, a high school sweet- heart who just returned from the Navy. They re- alized their objective with the help of expert direc- tion by Sister lVl. Nlerici. and from the fine acting by the cast. Virginia Dillingham appeared as Diana Minton whose fame as a mechanic was known fur and wide, but whose ability to win a man and hold him was practically nil. She was about as far from her goal l 44 as she could be as she was a tomboy and Tom pre- ferred the feminine, clinging vine type. Mrs. Minton, played by Carol Pierce, was re- sponsible for this state of affairs, because she held that a man wanted brains, not beauty, when he chose his partner for life. Grandmais lliosemary Corcoranil views, how- ever, on this subject were entirely opposite, for in her estimation the ability to fix a car and discuss en- gineering was a hindrance. not a help. uYou can't catch flies with sandpaper. You need a little stickum -and little honeyfl she would say. In the end Grandma was the victor, and her reward was the I knowledge that Diana and Tom would soon be married. The two younger Minton children, Scoots and Jerry portrayed by Helen Heim and Patricia Mor- ris further complicated matters as younger sisters so often dog while ,lohn Snyder, as ,Ierry's one and only. When the stage curtains opened for 'GA Little Honeyf, the audience saw that the familiar brown background curtains had been replaced by new aqua marine fiats. The seniors labored strenuously to make the scenery. and the sense of achievement which they felt when the task was completed made it well worth the effort. lfor many days before the play, lumber, paint. cloth and the tools used in mak- ing the scenery filled the auditorium. and after class hours the echo of pounding hammers resounded throughout the building, and the odor of fresh paint permeated the air. At last they were finished, and as the seniors surveyed their handiwork, they knew the new scenery would add to the effectiveness of the senior play. The success of the play was also due in part to the efforts of the stage crews-James McDermott who supervised the sound effects, Robert Thomas who took charge of the lights and curtain: Joan Twomey and Donna Bell who sold the tickets, Pa- tricia Morris and Carol Nichols who took charge of the programs, Carla Phalen who prompted: Con- stance Hayes who took charge of properties: and Robin Corcoran, Joan Dillingham, Theresa Mac- Namara, Susan West and Mary Lee Lanigan who applied the make-up. As the curtain closed on the seniors' first taste of show business. many breathed a sigh of relief. while for others, it was a sigh of expectancy for they have dreams of Broadway. For weeks this year's class waited impatiently for April twenty-eighth. Then suddenly it was here. As each senior reverently entered the Convent chapel. which had been artistically decorated with red and yellow tulips and forsythia, he realized sad- ly that there would be only a few more occasions when he and his classmates would kneel together as a class before the altar. As Father Horan entered the sanctuary to begin Mass, the seniors raised their voices in the beautiful hymn to Mary. 'SO Fairest of All Visions. At the Offertory they sang. H0 Cod of Loveliness 7' and as the bells ranff out at the Conse- 7 F' eration they devoutly sang, 'iHeart of Jesus. Hearfi Then as each student returned from the altar rail and made his thanksgiving, he became cogni- zant that he could never thank God sufficiently for the graces He has bestowed upon him through the years. As the seniors slowly filed out of the chapel, a feeling of nostalgia enveloped them, for they real- ized they were bidding adieu to Saint lVlary's and her faculty. This feeling, however, was quickly dis- pelled for they knew that their years at Saint Mary's had prepared them to face the fixture bravely and courageously. Then their dream came true as they realized that at long last, it was their turn to take over the floor show. To them Cafe Tres Chic was the dream of a young girl who couldn't participate in the show! Doctor's ordersf, Qloan sat at home dressed up and dreamed of Cafe. Anything can happen in a dream. and suddenly all the songs and dances and colors that ,loanis imagination could produce were right in Could This Be Amore? front of the audience. and they dreamed with her to the catchy rhythm of 'l'hat's Amore. to the lilting notes of 'gllancing in the Dark, and finally to the strains of Our Show ls Over. M., and Father Horan, Pastor, with the retreatants Under the guiding hand of Father Robert Lynch, 0. I . lVl., the Sodalists began their annual re- treat. This year they were privileged to have it dur- ing Holy Week, which helped them to enter into the penitential spirit of the season. lfaeh Sodalist withdrew into a world of his own for two days, each examined his soul, looked back over his life and made plans for the futureia future in which he would serve Cod no matter what his vocation would he. The ret reatants learned that they are really im- portant in the sight of Cod and He will never ahan- don them. lfather stated that in order to live as Christians they must strive to attend daily lVlass, frequently receive the sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist. Furthermore he recommended the daily recitation of the Rosary, frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament, spiritual reading and medita- tion. ln this way, they could live up to the Sodalists' motto, 'tAd Jesum Per lVlariam.'7 Emerging from this retreat with a deeper love for God each boy and girl possessed an ardent de- sire to serve Him faithfully forever. As the Sodal- ists howed their heads for the Papal Blessing, which closed the retreat. they realized more than ever the truth of the saying, 'ttf God he for us, who can he against us?', 15:53 Our 4-H Sing . . . s a ll. to VJ: Nl. lnonluiio.
