Perhaps it is because ot his Icnowledge oI human nature, he discerns at once what is closest to the heart ot each of us and adapts his mood to our own. FATI-IER I-IANDLIN It is amazing to Father I-IandIin's Iegion of friends that a priest so young has had time to acquire such great understanding and such Ioving sympathy. To comfort the sorrowIuI, to admonish the sinner, and to visit the sicI4 are the guideposts in I:ather,s Iite. Surely there must be unbounded treasures stored in heaven for him, because, by his gentIe suasion and hoIy example, he has brought many to the true IoId. I 6 Seniors are mAclrked with the S. M. H. S. brand SENIORS Lto FAHEY "Bud," our dignified Senior President, always lrnows what to wear and when to wear it. Although he would prefer to spend his time debating or being a football or baslcetball star, he reluctantly applies himself to his studies, deviating only to offer some humorous auip in the midst of a serious discussion. By the way, if you should walk into a hospital about 1950 and hear one of the Hmen in white" saying, "Why, l don't believe it,', or "Prove it," that's "Bud',. MARION CTDONNELL Marion, school activity promoter and cheer leader par excellence, is the proud possessor of the schools most contagious giggle. f-ler charm- ing femininity so belies her capability that she found she had to prove her efficiency by being an active participant in school affairs, such as, being vice-president in freshman and senior classes, secretary of junior class, Glee Club and Dramatic Club member. LEO CLARK "Clarl4ey"-zealous class officer in each of his high school years, diligent business manager of per Annos, hardworlcing dance commit- teeman, is really one-in-a-million. ln school he is the answer to a teacherfs prayer, on gridiron or court, the answer to a coach's. ln spite of numerous virtues and undeniable good loolcs he remains so completely unassuming and without conceit that he meets with the approval of all who lcnow him. 8 SENIORS MARGARET Sl-lERlDAN Ulvlargn, our efficient class secretary, is justly famous for the lovely bloom on her cheeks. l-ler friends know her as a jolly, smiling person, but with strangers she is quiet and shy, ln her vvork on dance com- mittees and in sodality, she has always preferred the doing rather than the saying. A vvord unguarded is sure to bring a blush from this coy senior, but blushing is after all one lost art, which adds to the attraction of any girl. BERNARD MCDERMOTT "Bernie" joined the great army of cacldies at an early age, and since then he has eaten golf, slept golf, and written hundreds of compo- sitions about golf. During his days at St. lVlary's he has gone quietly about his own affairs, managing the basketball team, doing art work for the Star and per Annos, singing in the Glee Club without ever having a radical thought or making the least noise. MARGARET ONEIL Upeggyn is positive proof thatgood things come in small packages. She is so cute that no one believes thatshe can actually do something, but take a look at the record . . . sophomore secretary, Star and Per Annos staffs, dance committees, Glee Club member and the best de- bater of them all . . . not bad for such a little girl, is it? With all her activities, however, Peg still has time to have fun herself and make a lot of other people happy. l9l SENIORS QLIVER RILEY HQllieU is an easy-going fellow who has passed his school days at the same slow tempo. l'le ably managed the baslcetball team, served on various school committees, school orchestra, sang in the Glee Club and performed his school worl4 without any visible show of effort. Qllie has two hobbies . . . dancing and speeding down Main Street in the early morn. LAURETTE BURNS f'l.aurie" combines the imitative powers of Fannie Brice with the literary ability of Dorothy Thompson. This latter quality won for her the editorship of the 1938 Per Annos, while her personality earned for her the coveted positions of vice-president of the sophomore class and president of the junior class. Added to these, she has excellent marlcs, successful chairmanship on Junior Prom committee, and high honors on the debating team. "You've got a swell edge on life al- ready, l.aurie. Keep it upln JOHN LUDWIG "Johnny" or "Sugget" as he is dubbed, is famed for his powerful physique. l-le played a melodious trumpet in the up-and-coming school band, and ably managed the football activities last fall. As chairman of that historic Junior-Senior debate, he proved himself to be a very versatile young man. Johnny may be seen any friday night hitch-hiking westward toward Groton. Whats the attraction, HSug", love of the country 'P '? l1o SENIORS FRANCIS SNYDER "Fritz", "Fly-trap Fanny", "Willie Baxter" Snyder is a refreshingly adolescent oasis in a desert ol over-drawn sophistication. Fritz glee- fully abandons senior dignity in Favor of a delightfully boyish capri- ciousness. l-le performed his duties as a class officer for two years and chairman of debates with the same zest that he played basketball and football, and with which he will play the game of life. NANCY CROSS Nancy is one of those amazing persons who are blessed with a multiplicity of talents. Besides being the "intellectual" of our class she is really "tops" at the drawing board, as is proved by her worlc as Art Editor of the Per Annos and Sodality Star. Outside of our own circle we have heard that she has a reputation for shyness, but, frankly, we doubt it. ROBERT REYNOLDS "Bob" is our happy-go-luclcy Ring of the dance. ln his serious moments he leans to the intellectual rather than the athletic side. ln organized debating or friendly argument his tongue is as nimble as his feet, and his eFFervescent humor brightens the most serious discussion. When Bob isn't being the white hope of the lVlohican Company, he is usually wrapped in dreams about something--or someone. 1111 SENIGRS CHESTER ADESSA "Chet", as he is popularly lcnown, is the type of pupil that St. lVlary's is proud to call her own. l-le possesses courage, leadership and initiative. l'lis football ability alone is sufficient to place him in St. Marys hall of fame. Chet has busied himself for four years with numerous extra-curricular activities, including the freshman class presi- dency, dramatics, debate and various committees. St. lVlary's is proud of her future admiral, for Chet has designs on Annapolis. RITA COOMBS "Rita" has been the mother in every histrionic venture since the third grade. She toolc her first role in the "Jimmie" plays and ended by giving a more than creditable performance in senior dramatics. Her musical ability is exhibited in the Glee Club and on the dance floor. Rita's charm and generosity, her efficiency as a class secretary, her worlc on dance committee are all so well known that it is unnecessary to expound them. BERNARD JOHNSON "Bernie's" dulcet tones have won him the appropriate title of uBingH. Although he is not very tall, he is a powerful fellow and his fame as a football player has been fully earned. ln spite of his phlegmatic nature he has proved himself a debater of no little prowess. Often we are forced to do without "Bing's,' witty remarlfs, for a gloomy day invariably finds him home in bed. 12 SENIORS BERNARD RYAN 'Barney' '... raven lwaired, rosy-clieeked, clear-skinned Robert Taylor of St. Marys, lwas proved liimsell an able assistant editor ol "Per Annosn. l'le is a real sportsman, excelling in outdoor activities. At present he is undecided whether to continue his education or to become the city's leading beautician. "Whichever you decide, remember your pals are pulling for you.H MILDRED CALL "Milly" is the original "l-lelplul l-lannahu. l-ler docility in per- forming any taslc maltes us a little inclined to adopt a 'Let Milly do it" attitude. Be not deceived, however, lor Milly is not to be trod upon. She is as staunch as the "Rock of Gibraltar" in her opinions, and no amount of argument will change them. Milly has proved a good Sodalist and Glee Club member throughout her high school years. ALLYN PHILLIPS "Al", in his pursuit ol material lor nevv slang phrases and smart say- ings, has developed into quitea Shalcespearean addict. ln his spare time he plays baslcetball and football, svvims, sings in the Glee Club and does all vvell. l-le is sell-styled "Addy the Rough," but the ap- pellatian is designed to deceive lor he is surprisingly gentle .... in fact, one of the best natured of our boys. JH l'i4 Freshmen, Sophomores ancl Juniors are assembled in the corral and assigned to their rightful places. LAST ROUND-LIP There is an undeniable thrill in seeing two completely different materials merge into a strange product with new characteristics. To thinlc that each experiment will yield a product heretofore unlcnown to us gives a feeling of power and ability. It is for this reason that the students in the chemistry class loolc forward to their exciting laboratory periods, wherein potential Reeds and Pasteurs may delve into the mysteries of science. Each student talces active part in experimental worlc in the laboratory, one vying with the others to produce new chemicals, secretly hoping that they may accidentally stumble upon a strange new gas that would roclc the world. The possibility of such a happening is faint but, nevertheless, chemistry students regard this class as one of the most inter- esting in the curricula. l-lere are the renowned .luniorsl ls their serious aspect not convincing? But you will Find them far lrom serious although forthe time they have come down to earth to assemble in their minds the delicate intricacies of Library Science, where, in addition to becoming familiar with the various phases of Library Science, they also acquire that Finer sense of appreciation for the educational value of the library. While stressing the educational value, however, we should not exclude the artistic and imaginative portion of the library. Today, when such increasing emphasis is placed on the social side of education and the relation of lile to school, the need of a more extensive Field other than that otlered by the classroom has become imperative. The library has Filled this need and is essentially the place for solving problems whether of life and conduct, or of science and education. ln most instances, European History is a story ol progress and achievement, but the failure of the Europeans to substitute the right for the might has been the greatest factor in retarding their march forward. It is sad indeed to contemplate the Fact that the peoples of Europe still settle their quarrels by war. As we gaze at the map of Europe we almost see the pattern changing before our eyes. Austria merges into Germany and everywhere are signs that the independence of small countries must be sacrificed to the greed of large nations. l'-listory B students realize that steps such as these are not the result ol sudden impulses but long months of careful planning. They realize, too, that many of the controversies raging in Europe today go boclc to the Congress of Vienna and even further. lt is evident that some solution must be reached if the world is to have peace. Who knows, perhaps, history students of tomorrow will study a completely diFlerent map of Europe? T3 il mi Chemistry students malce exciting discovery First row--F. Snyder, W. West, B. Ryan R. Anyone would warrant that the Romans had the wrong idea of time when they said, "Tempus lugit," because it does anything but that on some days. ln a very animated voice Sister Marianna explains the method by which one might Find the last term in a geometric or arithmetic progression. Cne certainly marvels at Sister's energy. "Everyone at the board," is Sister's command. ln a very short time the class is worlcing industriously, and, when the period is ended, the more ambitious pupils thoroughly regret that there is no more time for those interesting series or logarithmsll Students ol the Economic Citizenship class had their First experience with court procedure when they brought to trial a member of their class. From among the other members were chosen the judge, jurymen, attorneys, court clerlcs and witnesses. As each new witness toolc the stand all hope for the prisoner seemed to be abandoned. These witnesses lcnew many alarming and damaging facts which caused the prisoner some embarrassing moments. When all hope ol salvation seemed gone, the defense attorney called two of the prisoner's teachers to the stand. After their startling testimony the jury adjourned and much to everybody's surprise, returned with a verdict of "Not Guilty". ln this pleasant and somewhat humorous manner we were taught the proceedings of a court trial. The boys unroll a splendid engraving of an old 1756 map of Paris, showing how the city loolced in the reign of Charles IX. The legend is printed in the old style eighteenth century French. The pupils have fruitful hours in store for them, struggling to translate unfamiliar expressions-a difficult taslc but an enjoyable one. The various gates and buildings marlced on the map give rise to discussions of old and new France: the France of the medieval cathedrals and chateaux, the France of the war monuments and crosses "row on row". Our highest ambition is to be able to see "la belle France", to visit the people-to lcnow France as well as French. All too quiclcly our class period ends, the map is rolled up and the teacher is saying-"A demain, la classen. K N T181 Matlwematicians at Work Ar board R. Anderson, W. Dwyer. 'lst row M. Stoyell, M. Such was the wail our class of twenty Freshmen put forth after the First week of Latin. Night after night we struggled through declensions, conjugations and vocabularies. Each night we recited over and over again Hpuella, ae, ae, am, a," only to discover that the next day we knew it not. Just when we thought we knew something, along came the second declension with Hvir, i, o, um, o". Believe me, we were wearyl Gradually Latin became easier, because some of us inexperienced Freshmen discovered that the secret of learning Latin was to study it. Using the words of my colleagues, 'Latin was beginning to make sense." Now, we, the serious, slightly experienced Freshmen, are telling everyone that Latin is a "noble" language and that "Labor omnia vincit." Whispers, chairs scraping, hasty last minute consultations,-and suddenly a hush fell over the assembly as the chairman, John Ludwig, rose to introduce the First speaker on the annual junior-senior debate: "Resolved-that the sit-down strike is labor's best means of obtaining collective bargaining." As the speaking progressed, we realized that the speakers ot both teams really knew how to debate, their arguments were clear and concise, they spoke with all the poise and equilibrium of the experienced debater, they used proved facts and authori- tative material. While Leo Fahey, Robert Reynolds or Margaret O'Neil spoke, we felt surely the seniors were right in arguing the affirmative, but, when Patricia Quinn, l'lelen l"lammon and Donald O'Connell presented their arguments, we felt ourselves swayed to their way of thinking. It is well that the debate was of the no-decision type for it would have been most difticult to decide which side debated more proficiently. Enlightened students who took part in the exciting open Forum after the debate declared the debate an overwhelming success. Following in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, the new editors of "The Star" endeavored during the school year of 1937-1938 to edit a school paper that should become an integral part of the student life, and to improve the contents and make-up of the paper. Through the cooperation of the faculty and student-body, the First aim was realized as "The Star" became definitely interwoven into the activities of the school. As the staff grew more accustomed to their duties, the second goal was reached . . . for with the stars above as a guide, the editors strove to perfect their work. Perfection, however, was not gained, but as time passed, a marked im- provement in literary and journalistic ability was discernible. "Deus Vobiscumn . . . with this blessing the present members ofthe staff regretfully leave their offices and turn the management of "The Star" over to their successors. v' I ' xi fl li A l2OI Followers ol Caesar Standing J. This meeting is to malce plans forthe May procession, the event of the year forthe Sodalists. It is decided that the Maids of Honor shall precede the Queen, as they did last year, and that the Rosary of young ladies shall be a permanent part of the procession. This living rosary is a very lovely idea, both in spirit and in appear- ance. It is a beautiful sight indeed, to see the tall and stately young ladies, who represent the Creed and the Virtues, down to the smallest members who, in blue capes and white berets, personily the prayers to Our Lord and Our Lady. As the president concludes her remarlcs, buzzing and exclaiming begin on all sides. But the school buzzer buzzes louder still, cuts all suggestions short and the meeting adjourns. While a knowledge of the subject matter was of First importance in the typewriting class, we also learned to assume the attitude of a business man. l-lis standard of acceptance was considered in each typewritten paper. We learned to judge our worlc and to consider the accuracy in results, facility in execution, and neatness in form and arrangement as important in determining the acceptance or rejection of any paper. From the First lesson to the last, the principle that accuracy is of extreme importance, and that speed will follow upon accuracy was stressed. The artistic arrangement of business letters upon the page in order to attract the eye of the reader, and to produce a favorable impression on the reader was attempted alter the rudiments of typewriting were thoroughly mastered. From the outset we realized that our class motto, "lo learn is to earn" was true. Attendance at this class where we associated as fellow "business men" was enjoyable and will not be forgotten. lt was the hope of the First tennis team ol St. lVlary's that their beloved sport be carried on by their successors. lhe spring of 1938 brought the fulfillment of this desire when Five senior girls and three juniors reorganized the team and began the season's games. This year the team has continued on under the capable leadership of Rita Coombs. Formerly the tennis team was only a senior organization, but the year 1938 marlcs the entrance of the junior girls into the team. The class and interclass singles and doubles have already begun and will continue until examination weelc. This year's tennis team has shown a sparl4 of originality by playing a number ol sunrise matches. As the stirring strains of martial music floats through the air, passers-by lift their heads and pause a moment to listen to St. Mary's band, marveling the while, that the group has made such great progress in so short a time. The band, starting out shakily and doubtfully two years ago, has grown into a strong, compact unit with members who undeniably possess musical ability. Although the band members have worked hard and practiced arduously to perfect their musical technique, the real credit for the progress of the band goes to the director, Nicholas Mayer. His untiring diligence and patience have won the admiration of both his talented pupils and the followers of the band. lt was through Mr. Mayer that the first concerts were presented in the gymnasium of the school. The concerts were well at- tended, and in a short time the band had gained sufficient prestige to warrant their appearance at the local theatre. Their first appearance at the theatre was so successful that others followed. Soon striking white and gold uniforms became familiar to parade goers. Besides its activities for the general public, the band plays for the entertainment of the school, provides the proper atmosphere at football games and spurs lagging blue and gold warriors on to victory. St. Maryites, who love music, are enthusiastic supporters of the band, and no effort is spared to make the band a growing and success- ful organization. 'Ist row, left to right: M. Antil, J. Hill, J. As the year rolls 'round we find St. fVlary's orchestra rivaling some of the greater symphony orchestras of the country. Although this statement may be slightly exaggerated, our orchestra is progressing rapidly and can compare favorably with any other high school orchestra. Each year has found St. Mary's orchestra improved in some way, but in recent years, with the aid of Mr. Nicholas Mayer, progress has been more notable. Mr. Mayer, a prominent New York state band leader, took charge of the orchestra, reorganizing it and adding new instruments. This factor added greatly to the results obtained by this musical organization. - Although' the orchestra has always a prominent part in all entertainments and extra-curricular activities, it never was thought possible that this musical organization could present an entertainment of its own. This, how- ever, was accomplished, when in December the orchestra gave a concert. Noting the marked progress and the advanced selections rendered, the highly appreciative audience laudably acclaimed the efforts of the orchestra. Now that the orchestra has established itself as one of the most promising organizations of St. Mary's School and has proved itself worthy to bear St. Maryls name, it is striving for greater success and glory. As the great blue curtains slowly opened, a hush came over the audience-the play was beginning. After the curtains opened-the play unfolded, portraying the story of adolescent youth demanding recog- nition. Raul l-lollis, with his friends, all members of the "Secret Seven," staged a mammoth sale in the store of Mr. Hollis, who was vacationing in l"lavanna with his wife. l-loping to reap huge profits, they planned to use the money for a club dance. Another matter they hoped to talce care of was to prove Crandall Smythe, Raul's sister Marjorie's fiance, a raclceteer. Raul soon learned, however, that he could not control fate, and the sale was definitely a failure-the members ofthe "SecretSeven" called for his resignation as president, and Marjorie was indignant because of his interference in her love affair. With the return of Mr. and Mrs. l-lollis, a complete denouement occurred, and Raul gained his much longed for right to be called a man. Every character in the play was expertly interpreted, from the elderly Mr. l-lollis to young Snoolcie. All the members of the cast gave life and warmth to their roles, thus conveying to the audience the impression that they were actually living their parts. For ci while, in fact, their own personalities were hidden beneath the roles they assumed. Martin began his sixth season as mentor oF St. Mary's High School Football machine. While the First day's call brought out a group oF twenty or twenty-Five aspirants who were comparatively light, its number, however, in- cluded several moleslcin wearers with two or three seasons oF experience behind them. As Coach Martin began the ordeal oF whipping a new team into line, student-manager John Ludwig, was busily engaged in rounding out the schedule For the Saints. Included on the Final schedule were St. Patriclc's oF Binghamton, St. Anthony's High oF Syracuse, Holy Family oF Auburn, St. Francis de Sales oF Geneva, and, Finally, St. Aloysius Academy oF Rome. ln the initial game at Johnson City Stadium, the HBlue and Gold" were held to a scoreless tie. Twice in the Final quarter the Saints were halted within the shadows oF the Emerald goal posts, as they were unable to produce the Final scoring punch which was so uncharacteristic oF a Martin coached outFit. Unleasing a sustained running attaclc that popped out oF the box at the initial lciclc oFF and reached its greatest momentum with a three volley touchdown spurt in the third quarter, the "Blue and Gold" christened its home sea- son on Columbus Field by trimming the embryo St. Anthony oF Padua High oF Syracuse by a Q7-O score. Showing a decided turn For the better, the Saints appeared to be oFF on the right Foot. Idle For two weelcs aFter the decisive victory over Syracuse, the Saints lost to Holy Family High oF Auburn by a margin of 'I4-'I 7. Playing under the arcs For the second time, in three starts the Saints lost the decision in the Final quarter on a disputed play. Although playing in a sea of mud, the team Failed to lceep in stride with the type oF ball displayed two weelcs previous. Sadly outweighed, the Saints bowed to the Fast moving Genevans representing St. Francis de Sales High School on Columbus Field For the second defeat oF the season. Completely outclassed, the Saints gave little opposition and were politely lowered Further into the red half of the boolc. ln closing a none too successful season, the Saints were defeated by St. Aloysius Academy at Rome, 'I9-7. Throughout the First half the "Blue and Gold" completely outplayed and outscored her traditional rival, but Failed to uphold this Fine start during the remainder oF the game. Here, under the guidance of Harold "Deke" Mclfvoy, the wearers of the Glue and Gold went through the winter months fulfilling a schedule spotted with many formidable teams. The opposing schools, which competed against St. Mary's, came off the court, we regret to say, with the advantage in scoring and victories. Throughout a season of twenty-three games, the St. Mary's team was able to emerge the victor in only seven games. For the full season, the Saints put together a total score of 484 points, while a total of 639 points was piled up against the Blue and Gold. With a squad of but ten players, Coach Mclfvoy was unable to place a team on the court equal in playing ability with the other teams, nevertheless, we have to thank and congratulate "Deke" for his splendid execution ofa very difficult task. . From "Mike" Kernan came a creditable performance. ln his role as captain, "Mike" led the team in individ- ual scoring and was surpassed in floor work only by l.eo "Bud" Fahey. "Bud" more than made up for his low scoring by his laudable floor play and ball handling. "Al" Phillips, time after time, proved to be the spearhead in difficult games. Turning to the Juniors, we pat the back of young Francis Kiely. ln his first year as a varsity player "Fritz" ranked second in scoring and was able to hold his man well in check.
