I Get Around The '76-'77 varsity basketball team will be remembered to have lost the battle but to have actually won the war. The Panthers, under Coach Jack Altenburger, lost the SBC crown to Huron in a highly contested battle 9-8 but won the war of the St. Mary's Invitational beating Port Clinton 2-1 in the finals to claim the crown for the first time in its ten year history. This year, the team's leadership rested on the shoulders of five seniors, who nicknamed the club cardiac express , and rightfully so since the Panthers came from behind to win nine out of fifteen games. Five of the six season losses came by a one or two run margin. In the sectional tournament, the Panthers clobbered Norwalk St. Paul C10-49 but later fell to Gibsonburg in the finals C5-41.
