All By Myself The 76-77 Panther varsity wrestling team relied heavily on the experience of seven lettermen, including five seniors, who provided most of the team leadership this season, due to the graduation of seven seniors last year. The Panthers, defending champs of the Edison Invitational, captured the runner-up spot this year behind Norwalk. They claimed five champions in'Jude Roth, Kevin Roth, Dave Keech, Bob Voltz and Mitch Naufel and also had two seconds, two thirds, and two fourth place finishers. Third-year coach Tom Keegan beamed, We are super pleased. The kids did a fantas- tic job and l feel we have a young team that is going to progress as the season goes. In the Vermilion tournament, again being the only Class A school entered, the Panthers still managed to capture 3RD place behind Vermilion and Columbia. Jude Roth was the lone champ, as the team also grabbed two seconds and four fourths. At the SBC tournament, the Panthers placed 12 of 13 en- trants in their bid for a third straight crown, but fell to a veteran Huron squad and placed second. St. Mary's had two champs in Jude Roth and Tom Spendiarian, three seconds, four thirds, and three fourth places. Coach Keegan summed up the tour- nament as a fine team effort . Oh Very Young The 76-77 girls' JV basketball team enjoyed a successful season this year under Coach Rose Nath, compiling an overall record of 9-3, in- cluding a 5-1 SBC slate. The young squad consisted of seven fresh- men and three sophomores, including only one returnee from last year's undefeated team. The highlight of their season was a thrilling 28-27 victory with two seconds left over previously unbeaten Margaretta, snapping their 10-game winning streak. They also grabbed victories over Monroeville, Port Clinton, Norwalk Ctwicej, Perkins, Tiffin Calvert, Huron, and Fremont St. Joe. Their only losses were to Vermilion Ctwicej and Clyde. 0 ' Q N Driving down his man's shoulder, Jude Roth C983 works for a pin. Sidelines reflect mixed emotions about how this match is Andy Schwab shows how much wrestling demands of a person. Senior Mitch Naufel C1751 admires a well-deserved trophy for all his hard work. The Panthers repeated as Northwood Class A sec- tional champs, scoring 253W team points and sending all thirteen wrestlers to the districts for the second year in a row. The team claimed five champions, three seconds, two thirds, and three fourths. At Findlay College, the Panthers repeated as district champs over 40 other schools. Considering so many of our kids got hurt, l'm just happy that four guys made it to state , declared Coach Keegan after the victory. Champions Jude Roth, Bob Voltz and Mitch Naufel, and runner-up Matt Naufel represented St. Mary's at the Otterbein College state wrestling tournament. Mitch Naufel, the only senior member of the group, fell in his second match, but captured back to back wins in the consolations to place 3RD in the state at 175 pounds. He scored all 12 points for the Panthers who tied for 20TH place. l'm so proud of these boys. We had eight boys in the hospital during the year. Lots of injuries, but these boys, and l should say these men, came on to win sec- tionals and districts , stated Coach Keegan in summing up the season. The Panthers finished a challenging season with an impressive 6-2 dual meet record by defeating Lorain Senior, Shelby, Margaretta, Clyde, Perkins and Huron. The only losses came at the hands of Fremont St. Joe and Norwalk.
