I'm A Believer We had three separate seasons of basketball, getting off to a good start winning four or five in a row, then we lost three in a row and finally, the highlight of our season, the tournaments when nobody expected us to do well we breezed through the sectional and lost again to St. Pete's offered Coach Rose Nath at the Winter Sports Banquet. The 76-77 girls' varsity basketball team compiled a disap- pointing but not discouraging overall record of 9-7, including a 4-2 SBC slate. The Panthers played in a preview at Bellevue before opening their season with a tough win over Monroeville. After they defeated Port Clinton, the Panthers fell to Nor- walk, Perkins and Vermilion, but came back and exploded against Tiffin Calvert in a record-breaking performance. The Panthers fell again to Norwalk and Clyde, but defeated Huron, Margaretta and St. Joe in succession. The Panthers played well but came up short in a see-saw battle with Vermilion to end regular season. In the Norwalk sectionals, the Panthers defeated St. Joe and top-seeded Danbury Lakeside to,grab their second crown in two years. At the Willard districts, Coach Nath com- mented, No one figured us to get this far but here we are. There's no pressure on us. We just go out and play. St. Mary's shot past Plymouth to reach the finals against St. Pete's, but fell short 45-41. Coach Nath responded, For the second year in a row we lost to a team that we still feel we can beat. Mansfield St. Pete's went on to become Class A state runner-up. lst ROW: J. Roth, D. Platte, E. Casali, D. Galati, K. Kessler, M. Singler, M. Platte 2nd ROW: Coach Rose Nath, K. Kessler, D. Veith, B. All By Myself The 76-77 Panther varsity wrestling team relied heavily on the experience of seven lettermen, including five seniors, who provided most of the team leadership this season, due to the graduation of seven seniors last year. The Panthers, defending champs of the Edison Invitational, captured the runner-up spot this year behind Norwalk. They claimed five champions in'Jude Roth, Kevin Roth, Dave Keech, Bob Voltz and Mitch Naufel and also had two seconds, two thirds, and two fourth place finishers. Third-year coach Tom Keegan beamed, We are super pleased. The kids did a fantas- tic job and l feel we have a young team that is going to progress as the season goes. In the Vermilion tournament, again being the only Class A school entered, the Panthers still managed to capture 3RD place behind Vermilion and Columbia. Jude Roth was the lone champ, as the team also grabbed two seconds and four fourths. At the SBC tournament, the Panthers placed 12 of 13 en- trants in their bid for a third straight crown, but fell to a veteran Huron squad and placed second. St. Mary's had two champs in Jude Roth and Tom Spendiarian, three seconds, four thirds, and three fourth places. Coach Keegan summed up the tour- nament as a fine team effort .
