I'm A Believer We had three separate seasons of basketball, getting off to a good start winning four or five in a row, then we lost three in a row and finally, the highlight of our season, the tournaments when nobody expected us to do well we breezed through the sectional and lost again to St. Pete's offered Coach Rose Nath at the Winter Sports Banquet. The 76-77 girls' varsity basketball team compiled a disap- pointing but not discouraging overall record of 9-7, including a 4-2 SBC slate. The Panthers played in a preview at Bellevue before opening their season with a tough win over Monroeville. After they defeated Port Clinton, the Panthers fell to Nor- walk, Perkins and Vermilion, but came back and exploded against Tiffin Calvert in a record-breaking performance. The Panthers fell again to Norwalk and Clyde, but defeated Huron, Margaretta and St. Joe in succession. The Panthers played well but came up short in a see-saw battle with Vermilion to end regular season. In the Norwalk sectionals, the Panthers defeated St. Joe and top-seeded Danbury Lakeside to,grab their second crown in two years. At the Willard districts, Coach Nath com- mented, No one figured us to get this far but here we are. There's no pressure on us. We just go out and play. St. Mary's shot past Plymouth to reach the finals against St. Pete's, but fell short 45-41. Coach Nath responded, For the second year in a row we lost to a team that we still feel we can beat. The 76-77 freshmen basketball team, guided by first year coach Jim Metzo, regained the SBC crown for the first time since the 72-73 season. Sparked by co-captains Geoff Palmer and Phil Bickley, the young Panthers stormed their way to an 8-1 SBC record, enroute to an overall record of 11-1. They ran off six straight victories, defeating Norwalk twice, and Perkins, Margaretta, Huron, and Lakeside once, before being upset by Perkins 41-36. They came back to win their last five games in order, stopping Perkins 57-43, crushing Huron 70-49 and finally disposing of Tiffin Calvert 53-52, to grab the SBC crown. Oh Very Young The 76-77 girls' JV basketball team enjoyed a successful season this year under Coach Rose Nath, compiling an overall record of 9-3, in- cluding a 5-1 SBC slate. The young squad consisted of seven fresh- men and three sophomores, including only one returnee from last year's undefeated team. The highlight of their season was a thrilling 28-27 victory with two seconds left over previously unbeaten Margaretta, snapping their 10-game winning streak. They also grabbed victories over Monroeville, Port Clinton, Norwalk Ctwicej, Perkins, Tiffin Calvert, Huron, and Fremont St. Joe. Their only losses were to Vermilion Ctwicej and Clyde.
