You're Gonna Make lt's an experience watching a game in our gym, which we like to call the Panther's den , proved to be the understatement of the year by Coach Paeth, as the Panthers played seven of their eight overtimes during the season in the den . The 76-77 Varsity basketball team, thought by many to be in a rebuilding year with only one return- ing Ietterman, finished their season in fine fashion with a 15-6 record. After disposing of Western Re- serve, the Panthers fell to powerful Mansfield St. Pete's, but rebounded to crush SBC favorite Huron. They beat Fostoria St. Wendelin, but dropped a heart- breaker to Tiffin Calvert in overtime. During the Panther Classic, the team defeated Dan- bury Lakeside, then won a thriller over Old Fort in triple overtime to clinch the championship. The head basketball mentor summed up the win as none is as sweet as this victory tonight. The second half of the season brought wins over South Central and Huron once, and Clyde, Fremont St. Joe COTJ, and Margaretta twice, with the only losses coming at the hands of Tiffin Calvert and Perkins. The Panthers grabbed their 3rd sectional crown in four years, beating Norwalk St. Paul and New Lon- don, and advanced to the districts only to taste de- feat against Tiffin Calvert for the third time. After it was all over, Coach Paeth stated, This is not the best team l've had at St. Mary's, but I can say I'm more proud of what they have accomplished than the others. They refused to quit and just kept plugging away like thev have all year long. :nRgN'lg: Coach- Wally Amburn, Coach Norm Paeth BACK D Sartor Qmgrj D Sharpe M Pfanner D Link av e, D. Miller, J. Love Hangover The 1976-77 girls' tennis team wound up a disappointing sea- son, losing four very close matches, but at the same time showed their real potential. lf the 2-3 decisions they lost would have been reversed, the team would have had a winning record. The adverse weather conditions were also a factor as four matches were cancelled. With only two seniors on the eight member team, fortunes are looking brighter for next year. This year's MVP, Melinda Singler, will return next year along with junior teammates Debbie Galati and Bonnie Blake- ly, to lead the team. t s X Q X X s sxtissisisii mix ss s Nissfsissf imc News :sts Esssasiswsfriisse .secs Q-megs.. qssmsxss..
