I 1 The defenders of Czestochowa were daring and trustful - daring to resist the attacks of a well- eguipped and trained Swedish army, they forced it to retreat from the Jasna Gorag trustful - for they did not lose heart before an overwhelming force but, childlike, relied upon help from their heavenly Mother. Our class officers are expres- sive of what we mean that our school life pre- pares us to be daring and trustful. To be daring means to be fired with zeal to preserve our demc cratic ideals and the fundamental rights of free dom of worship, of speech, and of living embodies these ideals. The last days of the past year mark the 300 anniversary of the event when Poland, overrun l enemies, her armies routed in battles, with her kit far away in Silesia, seemed to be doomed to tot collapse and destruction. Only a miracle could save the Republic. At tl height of the disaster this miracle was affecte Like Noah's ark in the midst of the deluge, the mc astery of Czestochowa resisted the enemy. T Pauline prior, Augustine Kordecki, gathered a har ful of soldiers round the picture of the Black Madam venerated for centuries, and after a forty days' sie the Swedes were, for the first time forced to beat retreat. This was on the day after Christmas H655 tOskar l-lalecki, A History of Polandl. Jasna Gora, Poland's Mount of Light, was save Soon the entire country resounded with the sole: Te Deum in thanksgiving to God and to Her who enshrined' on the Mount as Queen of Poland. W fresh hope and courage filtering into the hearts of 1 weak and the faithless of the nation, the Poles drc out the Swedes beyond the sea. Our Lady of Czes chowa succoured her people. The love which the Poles ha ve for the Lady Jasna Gora went with them when political and soc causes forced them to seek freedom outside of tht country. They dispersed over all the continei carrying with them the image of their Queen c Mother. With a picture of Our Lady of Czestocho under his arm or carefully hidden among his spa: apparel, the Polish immigrant stepped on Amerie soil, trusting in God and confident of the protect of Her who defended .lasna Gora. z To be trustful means to do our utmost best with our God-given talents, to accept our civic re- sponsibilities, to be actively and vitally con- cerned with all the issues that affect our every- day life, always relying and in dependence on God and l-lis Mother.

The guiding spirit in the defense of Jasna Gora was prior Augustine Kordecki, a man of ardent faith, practical sense in action, invin- cible will and fortitude. We gratefully look up to our leaders who through their own shining example taught us to acquire faith to conquer foolish CGIGII and to defend this, our God-given heritage.
