N. til it OUR HOLY FATHER, THF MARIAN POPE The success of the Polish colonies which grew up in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, at Chicago, New York, Detroit, Milwaukee, Cleve- land, Buffalo and elsewhere . . ., is due to the parishes which were quickly organized in every Polish group . . . H. l-l. Fisher America Sf the New Poland The Polish immigrcmt persistently clung to his nationalistic tendencies, to the Roman Catholic Church and unselfishly supported his own institu- tions in America. These leaven-like characteristics gave rise to the numerous churches, some of which, like ours, under the patronage of Our Lady of Czes- todxowa are in the United States disseminated from coast to Coast. We herald the multiple blessings of one brave deed, that like a magic chain sprouts its golden links into eons of time. One phoenix-like Czes- tochowa multiplies its spiritual links tar and wide, over the continents wherever her defender's children wend their way. We in like manner, through the pages of our hook spotlight some of these links, the centers of worship, dedicated to Her Majesty, the Queen of Czestochowa, Regina Montis Clari, the Queen of Poland, the Black Madonna, the Lady of Bright Mount or Jasna Cora. It is fit- ting that we pay a tribute to our Right Reverend Monsignor Boleslaw A. To our Parish Priests we look for the vision that carries men to newheights of progress and achie- vementy to them we look for leadership that will con- tinue and perpetuate Saint Mary' s High. To govern and to rule, to administer and to direct: these are not simple matters. More than 300 years ago prior Kordecki left to the world his own example of efficient administration: both of spiritual as well as temporal affairs. But it is not enough merely to continue what has already been begun, new Con. ditions, changing times, progress itself demand new ideas, new projects, new improvements. Our class officers are expres- sive of what we mean that our school life pre- pares us to be daring and trustful. To be daring means to be fired with zeal to preserve our demc cratic ideals and the fundamental rights of free dom of worship, of speech, and of living embodies these ideals. The last days of the past year mark the 300 anniversary of the event when Poland, overrun l enemies, her armies routed in battles, with her kit far away in Silesia, seemed to be doomed to tot collapse and destruction. Only a miracle could save the Republic. At tl height of the disaster this miracle was affecte Like Noah's ark in the midst of the deluge, the mc astery of Czestochowa resisted the enemy. T Pauline prior, Augustine Kordecki, gathered a har ful of soldiers round the picture of the Black Madam venerated for centuries, and after a forty days' sie the Swedes were, for the first time forced to beat retreat. This was on the day after Christmas H655 tOskar l-lalecki, A History of Polandl. Jasna Gora, Poland's Mount of Light, was save Soon the entire country resounded with the sole: Te Deum in thanksgiving to God and to Her who enshrined' on the Mount as Queen of Poland. W fresh hope and courage filtering into the hearts of 1 weak and the faithless of the nation, the Poles drc out the Swedes beyond the sea. Our Lady of Czes chowa succoured her people. The love which the Poles ha ve for the Lady Jasna Gora went with them when political and soc causes forced them to seek freedom outside of tht country. They dispersed over all the continei carrying with them the image of their Queen c Mother. With a picture of Our Lady of Czestocho under his arm or carefully hidden among his spa: apparel, the Polish immigrant stepped on Amerie soil, trusting in God and confident of the protect of Her who defended .lasna Gora. z To be trustful means to do our utmost best with our God-given talents, to accept our civic re- sponsibilities, to be actively and vitally con- cerned with all the issues that affect our every- day life, always relying and in dependence on God and l-lis Mother. wb ' After CI typing lesson we stop to chat with our beloved Principal before the multiple duties of the day claim her for themselves RW- JOSOPH Szczepaniak, Pastor 84 K Street Tumors Fall, Massachusetts Our Lady of Czestochowa 4045 East 141st Street yr Cleveland, Ohio Rf. Our varsity quintet won ten straight games in Central Massachusetts Catholic League Di- vision II, thereby entitling our school to retain the trophy for the second consecutive year. This year the team held a ruling hand, and dominated the league. The season started slowly with losses much to a disheartening effect on the team. Neverthe- less, after tasting victory against St. Mary's of Waltham the picture changed for the season. Due to the fine showing during the winter months, St. Mary's was honored with two invita- tions in post-season tourneys, one at the New England Catholic Basketball Toumament held at Lawrence, Massachusetts, and the second, the Assumption College Invitational Tourney. At both of these affairs the Eagles of St. Mary' s suffered defeats bringing to the end what would have been another glorious chapter in the basketball history of St. Mary's High School. Theodore Wyrzykowski and William Rod- well with that winning look in their eyes. I F Baseball was brought back to the sport pic- ture of St. Mary's High School last year 119551 after a lapse of two years. Even though the schedule was limited to ten games, the team came up with a four and six season. The able effort of the coach, Mr. Zenon Sosnowski, helped in this short campaign. Once again under the leadership of the same coach, St. Mary's High School will play a similar schedule. No longer will be seen the ever eager faces of the seniors of 1955, nevertheless a nucleus been left to field an active team. Moreover, this year in order to prepare for baseball future of St. Ma1y's High School, we have invited some of the boys from the eighth grade to try out for the varsity nine. With the kind understanding and patience of the coach, this will be future material. The schedule this year will be home and house games with: Holy Name High School of Worcester Sacred Heart Academy of Worcester St. Louis High School of Webster Notre Dame High School of Southbridge Among the retumees of last year will be Ted Wyrzykowski, Sonny Kulesza, Bill Rodwell, Anthony Ruchala, Thomas Kimbar, Eddie Krzy- nowek, Dick Galkowski, and a host of others. We, students of Saint Mary' s High School, are also defenders and apostles of Her Son' s Kingdom within us and in the world about us. Our firm adherence to the Catholic faith of our fathers took deeper root during the years at Saint Mary' s, giving us the spirit- ual force necessary against the assailant. By per- severing work under the watchful eye of the faculty we fortified our minds through a basic education to interpret intelligently Catholic principles and by our apostolate to spread knowledge and love for the lofty ideals of truth and goodness. Through team- work displayed in athletics, through en oyment of social events, and through extracurricular activities we developed a sound and healthy body as befits a defender of the Faith. l . His high school preparation has had for its goal precisely this - to make of him a militant Catholic. In his heart he has envisioned in transformation of the world for the better, and has seen the part he will be asked to play. He knows, therefore, that he can have no better model to imitate, no one stronger to guide him on through life, than the 'Black Madonna , who can teach him courage and fortitude. From Her hallowed shrine may She deign to hear our fervent prayers so that Her presence among us be felt always. May She strengthen our wills to do only what is righteous and noble, guide and draw us to Her if we should err, con- sole 'us and assuage our pains when we grow weary with trials and anxiety. May She give to all of us the priceless secret of keeping the Faith of our fathers, to nourish hope in Her pro- tection as did the defenders of Her hallowed shrine, and to nurture in our hearts the spark of divine love, so that we may be instruments of promoting Christ's peace as our fathers were bulwarks in the defense of Christian nations. .31- I At the beginning of the end the seniors are giving their gowns und mortar boards 0 trv-out AS WE GATHER AT THY ALTAR WE BEG THEE, DESPISE NOT OUR HUMBLE PETITIONS, FORTIFY AND DELIVER US.
