(f GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS %A v The Music Department, under the direction of Mr. Brantley Greeson, presented four performances of Girls Will Be Girls. The cast consisted of members of the Glee Club and the light and gay operetta was a great success. CASTELLAN members were on the production staff and the yearbook received a share of the profit. Carol Festival The Candlelight Service is the highlight of the annual Carol Festival. The Spirit of Christmas lights tile candles of the various choir members. The whole room is soon filled with light as the entire audience joins in singing. One of the highest honors a girl at S.M.S.J.C. can attain is to be chosen as the Spirit of Christmas. The student so honored for 1957 was Doris Dickerson. 24

OF TOLERANCE Statehouse Scene Curly Chakales . . . what are you giving Ned, Lyl? Name, address and phone number? . . . love those helmets! . . . Where ' s the crutch? Road Scene Poor Dick G. . .exhausted after 21 trips down the road, and no wonder, with all that beard . . . Bonnie looks wor- ried, but her escort, Betty B., seems calm and cool. the family which did so much to establish the colony and to help it thru the trouble- some beginning days. The statehouse scene is enacted next, in a replica of the original building. These scenes, the dramatic high- lights of the pageant, show the Maryland Assembly meeting under Governor Calvert. After Calvert ' s death Governor Greene takes over the responsibilities of the colony and with the aid of Mistress Margaret Brent saves the settlers from invasion of savages. Mistress Margaret Brent demands the right to vote with the members of the Assembly and makes an impassioned appeal to the members. Her appeal is denied, Margaret Brent is not given a vote although she had done much toward the establishment of the colony. The following scene shows Wenlock Christ- ison after his flight from the New England colonies in search of religious freedom. He is welcomed by the friendly farmers and settlers of Maryland and is offered a home. The final scene shows an Assembly Meeting in which it is decided to move the capital of Maryland from St. Mary ' s City to Anne Arundel Town. The settlers left St. Mary ' s and the capital of our state has been Anna- polis ever since. The Pageant performance ends with a rendition of Maryland, My Maryland. 23
