THE BIRTH Music Hall Scene The Annual pageant The Birth of Toler- ance is presented every year by the student body at St. Mary ' s. Every person in school contributes to the success of this venture, either thru the acting or by helping with props, make-up or some other backstage job. The Pageant was written by David Turnburk to commemorate the founding of the colony of Maryland and is presented continuously for three days, on six loca- tions on our campus. The first scene takes place on Gallow ' s Green where an intro- ductory speech is given. The visitors are then taken by a guide to the Music Hall where the scene is set in England. Lord Arundel and the Calverts discuss the possibility of getting a grant of land from the King. The charter is granted to Leo- nard Calvert and the name Terrae Maria is decided upon for the colony. The second scene in the Music Hall shows the settlers preparing to leave for the colony in the New World. The scene is then shifted to the hill overlooking the banks of the St. Mary ' s River. The settlers are shown after landing in the Ark and the Dove encountering the Indians for the first time. A treaty is made with the Indians and Father Andrew White offers a blessing. Panorama and color are added thru the colorful Indian dancers. The next spot on the Pageant tour is the Calvert Memorial, erected to honor Lynnie of the long blonde curls . . happened to your crewcut . . . Mr. that wig slipping? . . . David what Norris, is Indian Scene Man, dig that crazy rock ' n roll number. . . Father Skipper White . . . radios and cokes in the tepees . . . 22
