Every person in school contributes to the success of this venture, either thru the acting or by helping with props, make-up or some other backstage job. The Pageant was written by David Turnburk to commemorate the founding of the colony of Maryland and is presented continuously for three days, on six loca- tions on our campus. The first scene takes place on Gallow ' s Green where an intro- ductory speech is given. The visitors are then taken by a guide to the Music Hall where the scene is set in England. Lord Arundel and the Calverts discuss the possibility of getting a grant of land from the King. The charter is granted to Leo- nard Calvert and the name Terrae Maria is decided upon for the colony. The second scene in the Music Hall shows the settlers preparing to leave for the colony in the New World. The scene is then shifted to the hill overlooking the banks of the St. Mary ' s River. The settlers are shown after landing in the Ark and the Dove encountering the Indians for the first time. A treaty is made with the Indians and Father Andrew White offers a blessing. Panorama and color are added thru the colorful Indian dancers. The next spot on the Pageant tour is the Calvert Memorial, erected to honor Lynnie of the long blonde curls . . happened to your crewcut . . . Mr. that wig slipping? . . . David what Norris, is Indian Scene Man, dig that crazy rock ' n roll number. . . Father Skipper White . . . radios and cokes in the tepees . . . 22 OF TOLERANCE Statehouse Scene Curly Chakales . . . what are you giving Ned, Lyl? Name, address and phone number? . . . love those helmets! . . . Where ' s the crutch? Road Scene Poor Dick G. . .exhausted after 21 trips down the road, and no wonder, with all that beard . . . Bonnie looks wor- ried, but her escort, Betty B., seems calm and cool. the family which did so much to establish the colony and to help it thru the trouble- some beginning days. The statehouse scene is enacted next, in a replica of the original building. These scenes, the dramatic high- lights of the pageant, show the Maryland Assembly meeting under Governor Calvert. After Calvert ' s death Governor Greene takes over the responsibilities of the colony and with the aid of Mistress Margaret Brent saves the settlers from invasion of savages. Mistress Margaret Brent demands the right to vote with the members of the Assembly and makes an impassioned appeal to the members. Her appeal is denied, Margaret Brent is not given a vote although she had done much toward the establishment of the colony. The following scene shows Wenlock Christ- ison after his flight from the New England colonies in search of religious freedom. He is welcomed by the friendly farmers and settlers of Maryland and is offered a home. The final scene shows an Assembly Meeting in which it is decided to move the capital of Maryland from St. Mary ' s City to Anne Arundel Town. The settlers left St. Mary ' s and the capital of our state has been Anna- polis ever since. The Pageant performance ends with a rendition of Maryland, My Maryland. 23 (f GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS %A v The Music Department, under the direction of Mr. Brantley Greeson, presented four performances of Girls Will Be Girls. The cast consisted of members of the Glee Club and the light and gay operetta was a great success. CASTELLAN members were on the production staff and the yearbook received a share of the profit. Carol Festival The Candlelight Service is the highlight of the annual Carol Festival. The Spirit of Christmas lights tile candles of the various choir members. The whole room is soon filled with light as the entire audience joins in singing. One of the highest honors a girl at S.M.S.J.C. can attain is to be chosen as the Spirit of Christmas. The student so honored for 1957 was Doris Dickerson. 24 CHOIR MEMBERS: J. Allen, J. Hearn, L. Shower, H. Risher, P. Ward, P. Williams, S. Cole, D. Dewitt, D. Dewitt, B. Urquhart, S. Carbia, S. This paper con- tains items of interest to the students and alumni and presents a com- plete record of all campus activities. This year the staff made great strides in news coverage, and the size of the paper was increased. Through frequent meetings and long hours of hard work, the staff members saw this record of their school year emerge. Any chronicle of events is difficult to compile, however, this book is as full and complete as diligent work could make it.
