The heights only give us what we ourselves bring to them. Climbing is means of self- expression. Man overcomes himself, affirms himself, and realizes himself in the struggle towards the absolute. The summit is at our feet. Above the sea of golden clouds other summits pierce the blue and the horizon extends to infinity. The summit vve have reached is no longer the Summit. The fulfillment of oneself - is that the true end, the final answer. - Lucien Devies Presdent du Comite de l'Hmalaya et de la Federation Francaise de la lvlontagne. BISHOP LYNCH 3-0 With 5:21 remaining, Senior Lamar Hunt gave the Lions their first score on a 21 yard field goal. That started this year's St. fvlarlds football team on its way to the school's first undefeated season since 1956. The Lions uncorked a powerful running attack with Senior Joseph Jones gaining 145 yards. Senior Scott Phillips played one of the best games ever for an offensive lineman. The Lions' defense thwarted off the pass-oriented Lynch offense. The Lions countered with two key interceptions by Ron Krape and Tommy Ebner. Ebner's interception came deep in Lion territory to stave off Lynch's threat. Ron Krape put out the Friars' lights when he intercepted a pass late in the game to assure St. Marks of its first win of the sea- son. Exulting after Hunt slams the winning field goal Nolan 44-14 The Lions used their steam-rolling running attack in crushing Fort Worth Nolan 44-14. The defense led by Hunt and Fowler held the fight- ing Dutchmen to ii yards rushing. Casady 34-0 On October 11, the Lions traveled to Oklahoma City to do battle with .the Casady Cyclones. The Lions considered this to be a tough game because the Cyclones had only lost one game in three years on their home field, However, this was not a factor as St, lvlark's rolled up a 34-O victory. The story ot this game was the defense. Led by seniors Wayne Whitham and John Boy Lee the Lions held the Casady attack to an incredible 65 yards rushing and 9 yards passing. K Tom Ebner goes over for the first Lion score. it Senior Linebacker Wayne Whitham stalks. The scoring began quickly with the Lions march- ing 27 yards, after a Whitham fumble recovery, with Tommy Ebner blasting over from one yard out. Lynn Fowler later scored on a 15 yard run, then tound Clay Hollis on a 14 yard TD pass in the second guar- ter. Joseph Jones led all rushers with 98 yards and scored twice on runs of 5 and 15 yards in the sec- ond half. After the game the Lions and SOO spectators set- tled back for a long and enjoyable ride to Dallas after collecting their second SPC title in two years. St. lohn's 31-0 Homecoming marked the battle of the undefeated, as the Lions faced a tough St. Johns squad. The Rebels blew into town sporting a 5-O record and a heralded blue chip crop. The first half was an intense duel with both teams trading punts and fumbles. The Lions finally put together a drive after a fumble recovery by Dwight Coleman, and Ebner blasted over from 4 yards out with 2:49 remaining in the first half. In the second half, Lynn Fowler engineered a 58 yard drive that resulted in a 24 yard field goal by Lamar Hunt. Fowler also hit Ben Jones on a 46 yard pass, with Jones doing most of it on foot. Tom Ebner scored again on a 22 yard run behind the trap block- ing of Tave Campbell, Scott Phillips, Will lvlontgom- ery, Wayne Whitham, Dwight Coleman, and Ben Jones. Captain Jeff Zisk added the final score on a 9 yard run. ge... The running attack had its problems this game gaining only 170 yards. Ebner led all rushers with 67 yards. When the running attack failed, the Lions looked to the arm of Lynn Fowler and the very sure hands of Jon Wiedemann. Fowler and Wiedemann hooked-up on a beautiful 32 yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 50 yard bomb in the fourth quarter. Joseph Jones and Lamar Hunt added the other two scores for the Lions. Senior Lamar Hunt 6 Notre Dame 28-0 Wichita Falls Notre Dame was the next victim of the Lions. The Lions came to Wichita Falls with a small band of loyal fans and walked away with a very impressive 28-0 win. This was the most productive game of the season with the offense amassing 534 yards. Joseph Jones led all rushers with 103 yards on 9 carries for an 1 1.4 yard average. On the Lions' second possession of the game, Jones broke for a 72 yard touchdown run. Tommy Ebner added runs of 17 and 31 yards in the second quarter. This win gave the liions the undefeated season they had dreamed of. The first half of the game was a defensive struggle with both offenses having trouble getting drives started. The tide of the game turned when Dwight Coleman dropped Reicher's quarterback, Robert Atkins, breaking his collar bone and virtually elimi- nating their offense. The Lions offense also had its problems gaining only 149 yards total offense. Fittingly, the defense led by Zisk and Ebner helped produce the breaks that gave the offense good field position. St. Mark's beat their next two opponents - J.J. Pearce 23-O and McAllen in the semifinals 12-1 . The Lions met Lamarque again in the championship game. The Lions worked hard all season and especially before the first scrimmage of the year with Lincoln, in which St. Mark's played very well. Although the Lions only won six games all year this is not indicative of their playingg St. lvlark's lost eleven games by less than six points. Games which are this close can go either way and St. lvlark's just did not get the breaks. The biggest disappointment of this type came in the Jes- uit game, with no time left and the Lions up by one, the Rangers sank two free throws to win the game by one point. The Lions kept their poise all season. They kept their pride and finished up strong at SPC. Even though St. lVlark's Basketball had a losing season all of the players still showed pride in St. Mark's and remained optimistic throughout the season, Q Bottom: J. Jones, D. The Lions opened the season by traveling to Casady for a non-Conference game in which the young team had to settle for a tie, 1-1. St. Mark's then went on to the NTHSSA competition which saw the Lions plagued by inconsistency. They were victorious in their first game against FWCD, 2-O, ln an extremely competitive game, the soccermen went ahead of Greenhill 2-1. The game was then called off at halftime and a later playing of tha second half enabled Greenhill to rally back with a 3-3 tie. The Lions later dropped a poorly played game to Trinity Valley, 1-2, but came back to boot Jesuit, 3-O. The Lions first SPC game was a real thriller as they defeated FWCD, 1-O in overtime with a goal by Dwight Fletcher. The Lions then trounced Greenhill 3-0 before losing to Casady, 1-2, and Trinity Valley once again, 2- 3. With their backs to the wall, the Lions came back to defeat Jesuit, 3-2, and to tie Cistercian, 2-2 to end the regular season play. St. Mark's tallied 60 points, the overall high for the league, thus capturing the private Con- ference Championship for 1975. In the Cup Playoffs St. Mark's came on strong to put down FVVCD 3-1 in the semi-finals. They met Trinity Valley for the third time, having lost twice before. The Lions went on to defeat Trinity Valley 3-2 and to claim the Private Cup. The Lions entered SPC play with a 3-1 record. They went on to defeat TMI, 3-O, St. John's 2-O, and Klnkaid 2-O. This gave the Lions a tie for first place with Casady, and a flip of a coin brought the trophy home to St. Mark's. NTHSSA Champions 227 Swimming On February 13, 1975, the St. Mark's swimming team put together what was probably the finest performance of all time by any St. Mark's aquatic team. When the froth on the pool subsided the Lions had not only bested a highly favored Trinity squad by a 130 to 105 margin, but also they had broken five school records and three Trinity pool records in the process. The meet was the culmination of a season that saw St. Mark's rise to prominence as a Texas high school swimming power. ln meet after meet the Marksmen proved that they can compete at parity or better with all but the two or three strongest teams in the state, no mean feat for a private school with a small student body and limited practice time. The team was remarkable for depth, but probably the outstanding performer for the year was junior Greg Kraus who set team records in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events at 149.3 and 1150.2 respectively, as well as swimming the anchor leg on the team record medley relay and setting a new record in the IM at 2:09.3. But Kraus was by no means alone, senior Craig Levering brought his three-year battle to take the 100 yard back- stroke record to a successful conclusion at Trinity, swimming the event in :59.1, with junior Sid Balman close behind. Mark Lenox dropped three seconds in the 100 breast to earn the school record with a 1:04.8 clocking, and Dixon Hutchinson, a gritty performer all season, wound up with bests of 5107.5 and 1353.4 inthe 500 and 200 yard freestyle events, both nearly record times. Scott l-larris returned from his outstanding water-polo sea- son to compile fine times in the 50 freestyle 423.23 and the 100 butterfly C57.6J. Doug Glenn and Marshall Payne improved dramatically in the sprints and middle distance, the former going 151 .5, the latter :52.2 in the 100 yard freestyle. And sophomore Al Glen and freshman Chris Gerken showed even greater improvement in the distance events -- Al dropping his 500 time by almost two minutes and his 200 twenty seconds, and Gerken swimming the 500 in 5122.4 and the 200 in 1:57.5. David l-lolt was consistent in the diving event. It was a highly gratifying season, only Richardson managed to beat the Lions as they compiled a 10-1 dual meet record, winning the S.P.C. against more or less token opposition and placing high in the S.M.U. relays and T.l.S.C.A. meet at Loos. Floar's reassuring voice was heard at many athletic contests throughout the year adding to the excitement and enjoyment of all. Thanks to Roar, many had a sleepy Home- coming Day, as Roar had spent the night adorning many trees around Dallas with a lot of paper. The highlight of the year was the annual bus trip to Casady. About 230 fans traveled north with victory in their minds. l i ri Q., Chess Club This year's version of the Chess Club was rather late get- ting underway due to a lack of facilities.
