Russell Martin Getter 6 YEARS Entered in 1968 from Webb Chapel Elementary Twenty-seven years ago in Chicago I piled all I had, my reputation, my character, my wife, children, home, I staked my soul, everything I had, on the God of the Bible, and the Christ of that Bible, and I won. - Billy Sunday IAM the true vine, and my father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, He takes away, and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in Me, and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up, and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. From the beginning, they were an ever-present body on the campus, supporting all phases of school life. The job they did at games cheering, with the new addition of Tom Woodruff - mascot, was instrumental in the football team's success. This year's pep rallies lead by the organiza- tional genius of Dan Bass, along with the creative genius of Bill Von Behren and the whole maintenance crew, will always be remembered for getting the players' juices going. Captain Dan Bass deserves much credit for organizing the outstanding victory parties, said to be the best ever. , K ',,c 3 C s 'tt c, s ,ct',f, Q ie l sa l, o I ,f J jr.: K H V , v, , any if X . 1' l l +V 1 .kmpgfqs . - H ,, f, r C' as , 4,....,,, , , ,., , . , . 168 favorite. 1 Tm Y W . 1 Y ,WM , fs ., ix M f ,, . 1 ,I 7 if Ng ,- '. Their joint car wash got things started with a big splash. Floar's boisterous and wel- come volce was heard at games home and away, adding a note of reassurance to the players and heightening excitement for the fans. Hours of sleep were forfeited by diligent Roar workers as they artistically rolled the homes of St. Mark's varsity football team members in honor of Homecom- ing. This added a boost to each player's morale and possibly despair to each player's parents. Thanks Roar for capturing that elusive something called school spirit and making it a great year for Marksmen. .-.. f Dynamic! xi- O' if , als... lt was again reinforced that St, lv1ark's more than holds its own intellectually, as ten seniors were awarded the coveted status of National Merit semifi- nalist. Among the highest scorers in the country were Marksmen: David Frye, Burt Hailey, Bruce Holmes, James Keay, John Kemp, Sandy McCorquodaIe, Glenn Maples, Robert Naab, Dan Plumlee, and Paul Stewart. Additional honor was brought to our school as Dan Bass, Dunham Cobb, Leslie Connally, and Buck Wynne received NMSQT letters of commendation. :XX Hockaday Carnival For the first time, St. Mark's students contributed their time and effort to the Hookaday Charity Carni- val, and hopefully, added to its success. Booths were set up by several St. lVlark's classes and clubs. Marksmen bodies were offered for the Senior dunk- ing booth which was perhaps the most popular of the many attractions. ,. QQ. Grandparents as well as alumni were given a royal welcome. Many grandparents toured the campus and attended classes while alumni vis- ited with faculty friends. The football Lions did their part in making it a big evening by defeating Kinkaid 42-8. A dance hosted by the Sophomore Class with the music of Daniel brought the memorable day to a close. OP' 4' 3. Mrs. Sharon L'HeIgoual'ch also helped direct the Middle School Choir in a vaudeville routine of Benja- min Britten's The Golden Vanity. lunior Dance November was highlighted by the Junior Dance. THE TEAM , L,,l ,, L .ho- ' .,. Dallas Christian 0-0 On August 31 , the Lions opened their regular sea- son against Dallas Christian. Dallas Christian was considered an easy team to beat from past experi- ence, yet the Lions really were not up for the game. On offense the Lions moved the ball well, but only in the middle of the field. Tommy Ebner, Bob Firth, and Paul Stewart rushed for a total of 209 yards, but couldn't put it over for a score. The Lions penetrated the 20 yard line at least three times, and every time their drives were stopped. Defense was the real highlight of the game. The St. lVlark's Mean Machine held the Chargers to minus 24 yards rushing and 142 yards passing. Even though the offense had failed, the defense kept the Lions undefeated for one game anyway. fm .,,, , fi., i ff ff , nrkft , J , -. , -u V 4, 4 ' at L , , 5. - ' 4,2 f, , 5 fr r ,xfvvw ' f r h L ,maya , V V 4 , Bishop Lynch 10-15 St. Mark's came out for the Lynch game with just the opposite attitude as they had in the first game of the sea- son. The Lions had really worked that week in practice and everyone was ready for a hard-hitting ballgame. The St. Mark's defense was again tremendous and at the end of the first quarter the Lions had held the Friars scoreless. The offense had also managed their first score, as Chip Justice put the ball through the uprights for a 35 yard field goal. Then disaster struck. As the Lions prepared to kick another field goal at the end of the half, the attempt was blocked, the fumble was picked up, and the Friars scored. During the second half, St. Mark's fumbled a punt on the one yard line and Lynch recovered to set up their second score. The Lions were able to score one more time when Lynn Fowler carried for 9 yards, but they couldn't pull it out. St. Mark's really didn't lose though, they held Lynch to 18 yards rushing and 98 yards passing. This game was a game of bad luck, but it served to bring the players together as a team. Tom Ebner avoids Lynch tackler THE MEAN MACHINE Kaufman 16-7 The Kaufman game was probably the most impor- tant one of the season, not because they were our biggest rivals, but because they were ranked sixth in State AA and they beat us last year 28-9. They were undefeated and unscored upon, and if we could beat them we would have the confidence to go undefeated the rest of the year. In the first quarter Paul Stewart scored on a 3 yard run and Lamar Hunt kicked for the extra point. In the second quarter Tom Ebner scored on a 1 yard run and Kaufman scored on an 80 yard pass play. At the end of the first half St. Mark's led 14-7. The second half was a defensive battle as again the Mean Machine held their opponents to zero yards rushing and 16 yards passing. With 29 sec- onds left John Boy Lee tackled the Kaufman quarter- back in the end zone to make the score 16-7. The Lions' victory of the year. X . is VICTORY 4 Bishop Dunne 28-6 This was the last of the three tough games against teams bigger than St. lVlark's. As the Lions entered the game they were well aware of the great speed of the Falcons and Dunne's ability to break the game open in one play. With 1:19 left in the first quarter Tennell Atkins of Bishop Dunne made the big play by racing 98 yards for a TD. This broke the ice for the Lions and sparked the offense to drive 59 yards and score as Rodriguez scampered over from the 10. Later in the second quarter, with 38 seconds remaining, Paul I ow, Lc: Q Lamar Hunt and Lynn Fowler Stewart scored from the one to make the score 14-6 at the half. In the third period the Lion defense forced the Fal- cons to cough up the football and with 3:54 left Rodriguez plunged over from the one. Holland Hall was probably considered the easiest game of the season, but from past experience with Dallas Christian the Dutchmen could not be taken lightly. The Lions immediately took charge by controlling the ball tor a sustained drive which set up Lynn Fowler's 20 yard dash to paydirt. Bob Firth scored next on a 2 yard run as the Lion defense continued to force Holland Hall to turn over the football. Then in the second quarter, Lynn Fowler found Paul Stewart for a 12 yard TD pass. The second half was again dominated by the Lion defense and the offense also managed to put ten more points on the board as Tommy Ebner scored on a 17 yard run and Chip Justice booted a 33 yard field goal. This 30-6 romp gave the Lions their first SPC victory. 185 Casady 20-2 The game with Casady was an emotional battle as the Lions attempted to redeem themselves after last year's 14-7 loss in Oklahoma City. lt also meant reoapturing the SPC title. The weather was very unpleasant as rain fell throughout the game but to the advantage of the Lions. As both teams' passing game was totally shut down, the St. Mark's running game prevailed. The offense maintained two drives ot 66 and 50 yards, both of which were topped off by 3 yard plunges by Paul Stewart for the scores. The other St. lVlark's score came early in the fourth quarter on a 1 yard dive by Raul Rodriguez. The Cyclones' only score came late in the game when Clay l-lollis was caught in the end zone for a safety. This left the score 20-2 for the Lions - and the North-Zone Championship. r T' Y . L. o lf. St. John's was expected to be tough and the Lions were prepared to defend their record. St. Mark's racked up 211 yards on the ground and the defense came through holding the Rebels to 28 yards rushing and only 19 yards passing. The Lions took charge from the beginning as they took the opening kickoff 49 yards and nine plays later Paul Stewart scored from the one. Paul Stewart Cabovej finds Tommy Ebner Cleftj open on the halfback pass. St. John's then fumbled on their first play and Jim Clutts booted a 23 yard field goal. Once again the race was a closely contested battle between Casady and St. Mark's. The Dynamic Duo of Ed Kownslar and John Kellogg consistently had the best times of Lion run- ners. They could always be found duelling for top places in every meet. David Maldonado and Phil Smith, newcomers to the team, also contributed greatly in the team's campaign this year. Even though these people were newcomers they added great depth to the team and one, David Maldonado, earned all-conference honors. Team leadership was also a great factor in the team's success. Trey Nicoud showed the leadership that is imperative for a championship team. Bill Neale, though injured most of the year, contributed greatly to team morale. f Z nf' ' Q ' ,ii QW , V , is ,pi 3 1l11 1 . 7 . , ,, '-W W 1? ijzgfii I A-r Ed Kownslar battles to the finish. dfilluijzr-1 . ,,m.:1V .W s . ia, in-,ff w ,,. :Wi - ..,.. . ,ian H? 11- f1.i K - if R n wmv 'S H1- W aww A r rgffi ,1 N , f W ii -v 1 32- . -Q - ,ii 1. 5 if 'mit T v-imfvff Da .K ,Q - if X xx Q X J Q . John Stutsman, had by far, more strength and depth than either of the two teams preceding it. Only in its third year as an activ- ity and second as a varsity sport, the Lion team fared exceptionally well against tough competition from all over Texas. The polo team played other high schools only in tournaments, so it had to rely upon Dallas matches with UTA and TCU for experience. The real highlights of the season, however, were at College Station, Texas where Texas AGM hosted two tournaments - one in September and one in November. The latter of the two, the Texas High School Water Polo Championship tourney on Nov. 2-3, featured select teams from Texas competing for the first place ranking in the state. St. lVlark's bet- tered its performance of last year by finishing in third place. lt was during this tournament that the Lions played their best game ot the season by beating McAllen, ll-8, the team that had blocked the Lions from the semi-finals last year. The winner of this tournament was a team from College Station CASJVI Consolidatedb. The captain of the team this year was senior Tiger Allyn. He and Scott Pinkston were the only seniors on the team, so, the water polo squad looks forward to a great season in 1974. Whatley spoke on the First Thanksgiving and was followed by a musical salute to the memory of John F. Y Sophomore Dance The Sophomore Dance was held a week early this year because of sports events. So, on February 2, rather than the 9th, the dance took place. The dining room walls were covered with black plastic, and the crowd moved to the music of J. K. Anderson. Class President Tom Jones organized the dance. He said, Sophomore Dances tend not to be the best dance of the year, but we're gonna change that. The refresh- ments were supplied by Mrs. Edward Wilson. Weisberg takes off WINTER SPC The weekend of February 14-16, St. Mark's hosted ,the Winter SPC Tournament. Teams from Kansas, Oklahoma and I over Texas converged on St. Mark's to participate in swimming, soccer, basketball, and wrestling. The teams cluded Casady, St. Stephen's, St. John's TMI, San Marcos, Wichita Collegiate, FWCD, Holland Hall, and Kinkaid. St. Mark's proved to be a rude host for the Tournament - sweeping all four of the sports, continuing its domination SPC this year. 90 fgrm 222 l Tney're off. Collins drives. The only win of these five came against Plano in a 72-59 rout which ended in a fight and ejection of senior guard Rusty Getter. The Lions then faced Bishop Lynch for a closely-contested game in which the St. Mark's Lions came out on top, 70-66. This proved to be good preparation, however, for the J. J. Pearce Tournament on December 6-8. The Lions were returning in hopes of defending their title, opening against Pinkston. This was one of the tough- est games of the season, but St. Mark's managed a 10-point victory, 59-49. In the second round the Lionsj edged Adamson 44-41, behind the scoring and rebounding of captain Paul Collins. Again the Lions made it to the finals, where they faced Pearce for the second time of the season. Pearce won 60-54, but Paul Collins still managed to find a spot on the All-Tournament team. The cagers then entered the Pepsi Tournament just before Christmas, which was perhaps the low point of the season. St. Mark's could muster only one win over McKinney between defeats to N. Garland and Nimitz. The best showing the Lions made was in the Dr. Pepper Tournament. After the first day of the tournament, the Lions made headlines. They were referred to by Dallas area writers as the Cinderella team of the fiel after crushing wins over Richardson C77-593 and Thomas Jefferson C77-613. The second day the Lions wer not so lucky, however, as they lost to W. T. White C48-705, but St. Mark's was not forgotten as Paul Collins wa named to the All-Tournament team. The one meet that St. Mark's dominated was SPC. There was no doubt that the Lions were champs as they crushed every team on their way to the title. The Lions were 7-O in conference play and had four players on thrg All-Conference list. Paul Stewart, Paul Collins, and Robert Stokes made All-Conference first team, and To Ebner was honorable-mention. The Lions had a very tough season in competing with more public schools than ever before and being plagued by injuries, but they came out ahead with a record of 18-13 for the season. This year's team was led by Seniors Harris Block and Duke Phillips. Both captured first places in every tourr nament the team entered. Duke also won Outstanding Wrestler in the North Texas Region and Texas Statd Championships. Harris won Outstanding Wrestler at the R. L. Turner Tournament. The team had eight returning starters, and those who joined the Varsity wrestled very well. Former B-tearr heavyweight Dwight Coleman captured the state title and lost only four matches the entire year. Of the returning starters Harris Block went the season undefeated and won the state championship at 129 pounds. Duke Phillips had his finest season as he won State and lost only once. Brother Scott Phillips also los' only once as he took second in State. John Boy Lee won his first tournament championship and that came a' the North Texas Championships. He also finished a strong third in State and looks for a strong senior year. But with the former play- ers and a lot of fine new material St. Mark's once again was able to build a winning team. The team was lead by captains Sinclair, Justice, and Hammonds. The coaches were Mr. Meyer and Mr. Kohler. The team consisted of Cassidy in the goal and fullbacks Justice, Sinclair, Rag- land, Vanston, Price, Pratt, and Holmes. At halfback were Hammonds, Geilich, Cobb, Koca, and Bond. The front line was composed of Hailey, Aronson, Clark, Fletcher, Krape, Lang, Keay, and Maldonado. Winning two and tying one of the first three games, the Lions showed promise of a powerful offense, but still had a faltering defense. Jesuit, trouble for St. Mark's all season, quickly took the wind out of the Lions' sails. Following a disappointing tie with Fort Worth Country Day, Casady, St. Mark's biggest SPC rival, came down and beat the Lions by scoring a goal in the final period. Though discouraged, St. Mark's rose to defeat Greenhill in the final game before Christmas. St. Mark's staned the new year right beating Cistercian twice in a row, but the Lions had seen their last victory for a while. After a surprising loss to Trinity Valley, St. Mark's travelled to Casady for their worst loss of the season and their only SPC loss. Unable to avenge themselves, the Lions had to settle for a tie in their next game with Jesuit. Then for the division lead, St. Mark's suffered its first loss ever to Greenhill. Needing to secure second place away from Jesuit in the division to be able to compete in the play-offs, the Lion had to win the next four games, and they won big, beating FWCD, Holland Hall, and Jesuit. ln the semifinals St. Mark's scored a crushing win overt Trinity Valley and moved on to the finals. There the Lions met Greenhill. The game was scoreless as were four over- time periods, but the game was awarded to Greenhill on corner-kicks, 3-1. The SPC Tournament was all that remained, and Casady led the Lions by one game. Meeting Kinkaid in th first game St. Mark's traded goals for a 3-3. But the Lion quickly took the lead in overtime and won. Casady tie that night. St. Mark's crushed St. Stephen's the next morning with precise and conservative soccer. Casady, unfortunately, won that morning also, so the Lions were still a half game behind. The final game of the season was against TMI. Th game went scoreless until the last two minutes, when Bu Hailey put a penalty-kick into the net. Luck was on the sid of the Lions, for that afternoon, inspired by the St. Mark' soccer team and many fans, St. Stephen's held onto a early goal to beat Casady 1-O. St. Mark's had won SPC! l was the first time in five years that St. Mark's had won all three tournament games. Mrs. Bernice Johnson Dr. Bryan Williams, Dean of Southwestern Medical School and father of Senior Philip Williams, discussed careers in medicine with Juniors and Seniors in a special joint class meeting in February. Dr. Williams stressed the fact that the medical profession is not for everyone. He stated that within the last few years an increasing number of college undergraduates have chosen to become doctors. He feels this rising interest will prove to be detrimental, when society finds it has more doctors than needed. The speaker attributed the present situation to the romanticizing of modern medicine through television and other media. Dr. Williams made it clear, however, that he did not want to dis- courage anyone from a medical career, but he did emphasize that it can not be for everyone. Noting that within the next few years the Juniors and Seniors will pick a means ot making a living, the Dean pointed out that a person can make a contribution to society through business and other occupations, without dealing with his fellow man on a one-to-one basis. Acknowledging that the medical profession has grown highly competitive because of a rising number of applica- tions, Dr. Williams said he would help in any way that he could, stu- dents pursuing a medical career. Mrs. Bernice Johnson, an American Indian from the Dallas Inter-Tribal Center, spoke to several his tory classes at St. Mark's in February. She said that the main problem confronting lndi ans is simply a lack of understanding. ln particular she pointed out that the idea of a scholarship is unclear, and she encourages young people to take advantage of all scholarship offers. The Dallas Inter-Tribal Center is supported entirely by donations.
