Chosen by a vote of the student body, these enthusiastic students set a precedent by cheering not only for football and bas- ketball games, but all of the sports. Their five victory parties and their humorous pep rallies were a source of enjoyment for the entire student body. 7 Orchestra The Orchestra this year continued to instruct boys in the string instruments while putting on several good con- certs. They performed a Christmas concert, played at the ISAS Festival in March, gave several Lower School con- certs, and finished up the year with a concert in May, where Harold Rolfe played a fine violin solo. After separating into eight groups, they spent most of their time hiking from thirty to forty miles. The weather was generally nice and most of the boys managed to sur- vive the overnight solo high and dry if not hungry. It was generally agreed the the highlight of the trip was the rock climbing and the rappeling. The idea of a freshman wilderness trip began in the '71-'72 year, when it was felt that the incoming freshman class needed a unifying experience in a different environ- ment. The trip, patterned after Outward Bound, was altered to conform to a younger person. The freshmen found that it was easier to come to understand their fel- low classmates by adapting their life styles in an attempt to become one with nature. rf- rappelingl ,I ygl ls, ,V Q, Q. -V' W W rappeling? .ms As for small difficulties and worryings, prospects of sudden disaster, peril of life and limb, all these, and death itself, seem to him only sly, good-natured hits, and jolly punches in the side bestowed by an unseen and unaccountable old joker . . . In order to revive the spirit of Homecoming, a massive letter campaign to St. Mark's alumni was insti- tuted. Junior Dunham Cobb organized the reunion and discovered an interesting group called Baccus. Their music was good but their specialty was fifties rock and roll. They created a half hour medley of it to the delight of students and Mr. Tom Adams, who gave an unprece- dented exhibition of the frenzied 'fifties' dancing and ulti- mately his inner selfiivviliou-is trying desperately to escape from that tough, history teacher athletic coach exterior. Baccus S girl k.s.t.m. folk concert K.S.T.M., the St. Mark's radio station, held its annual folk concert October 14. The concert was staged to raise money for a transmitter. Although not a roaring success financially, musically it was of a caliber totally unex- pected and thoroughly enjoyed. Herman Nye, as much a musician as a humorist, opened the concert. A multitude of talent from the St. lVlark's community was heard as Mark Early glittered into the hearts of millions every- where. Especially fine performances were given by Geoff Wilson and Cary Boren. Joe Blair, Mr. Lutkenis Blueg- rass Band, Hank Sehlinger, and Robert Titley. With a variety of music ranging from flamenco guitar to Ken- tucky Bluegrass, the concert was undoubtedly one of the finest ever given at St. Markis. Charlie Cravens managed to book Shiloh, a group which had recently finished an appearance at the Hyatt House. The theme of the dance was, In the Heat of the Nightf' This idea was reinforced by decorations which included a black tunnel entrance with black plastic cover- ing the walls. Black lights provided the lighting. An unu- sual and quite original effect was achieved by creating a fog over the dance floor which came from dry ice. A strobe was then directed at it. Through the organization of Dan Plumlee and Dunham Cobb, the dance was regarded as being highly successful. This, the first dance of the year, set a fast pace for the other classes to follow. Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols The Choir and Clee Club presented their annual hristmas program December 13, in the chapel. No one actually believed that anyone could collect 50,000 cans i three weeks but the senior class steadfastly stood beside its goal. On Decembi 15, the can-paign ended when the announcement reached the shocked crow at the annual Christmas Party that, despite three days of icy weather, 50,4fC cans had been collected. The Can-paign got off to an energetic start with numbers of Hockaday gir working every night the first week. Good spirits were shared enthusiasticall The freshmen raffled a bicycle, the sophomores sponsored a dance, Barnm jumped for 3120. Concerts, plays, shows, tournaments, and games were he in behalf of the Can-paign. And then there was the auction. Thousands dollars were collected at the food auctions. One dozen doughnuts sold fi 354-3.75, two pizzas for 33050, a Caravelle candy bar for 3515.50 Led l George Dealy, the sixth grade class collected over 6,000 cans to win the cla contest. The room filled quickly with doting parents - quick, young first grade mothers, and stately, proud senior fathers sat to watch the trimming of the tree - while some confused six hundred or more students and faculty crowded, crouched, leaned, shoved and slouched against the walls in the chapel. The 5th, 6th and 7th graders sprawled on the floor making a sea of navy blue against the altar steps - two youngsters found refuge beneath the speaker's podium - and were madly ripping programs they had snatched from unsuspecting Lion and Sword ushers and oblivious classmates. AFS students living in Dallas were invited to the school to give informal talks about their countries. During the afternoon, talks were given on the various countries and anyone who was free could attend. Y 4 Y 5 SPORTS 204 Lion Football 1972 Everything was fine. On 16 August, the St. Mark's football Lions assembled to begin their season. A different spirit was evident about thi: team from past St. Mark's teams. It was undefinable, but evident. The usual multiple set pro-style offense of the past year gave way to the old single wing and the wishbone. A multi tude of talented backs gave these new systems power. Head Coach Charles Quisenberry, offensive back coach Don North, offensive line coach Sandy Donaldson, defensivm backfield coach Tom Adams, and the new defensive line coach Pete Ensor from St. Mark's in Massachusetts, ran tht players through the summer workouts. Spirit was high at the end of the first week when the team held an intersquad scrimmage. The white team consisted o the first string line and second-string backs, and the basis of the blue team were the first string-backs and second tean line. Two days later the team traveled to West, Texas to take on their football team, and find out how good they really were. The team was lulled into complacency the the town's sleepy appearance, and that fact coupled with Westas strong set: of backs and receivers ended the Lions' sleep by scoring six touchdowns in the controlled scrimmage. The next week was spent practicing and preparing for the Greenhill scrimmage which was later cancelled. It was now time to really start the season, and the Lions were ready against Cistercian. l E i 4 Sam Papert hauls one in. Lynn Fowler sets to cut loose. But the Lions ook this as a personal insult, and crammed 32 points own the hapless Hawks in the final three quarters of tlay. In this game the Lions used their new Wishbone iffense to perfection with Sam Papert and Tommy Ebner t halfbacks and Paul Stewart at fullback. And Also Convert Christians The Dallas Morning News evidently did not think too much of the Lions after the Cistercian game as it pre- dicted Dallas Christian to win, 27-17. The Lions took the old single wing out of mothballs and so confused the Christian defenders that it really wasn't a contest. Paul Stewart scored three times on runs of 56, 10, and 1 yards, and Sam Papert flashed 81 yards in one single wing end sweep for a touchdown. Lynn Fowler ran an interception back 27 yards for a score, and Scot Frost scooted 9 yards for the last score. The Lions scored 43 points, Dallas Christian's 27 and our own 17. 206 kaufman . . . 9-28 After the two initial victories, the Lions received sub- stantial publicity in both of the Dallas newspapers about the use of the single wing, and the Lions two lopsided victories. But the Kaufman team remained unimpressed. Their teamls behemoth fullback, Marvin Williams and their tiny scatback, Berry Lewis, both ran over the Lion defense, while their defense contained the Lions' attack. Paul Stewart scored the lone Lion touchdown from three yards out, and Tat Tranchin tackled a Kaufman back in the end zone for a safety. But it all went for naught, as the Lions' costly interceptions and fumbles beat them, 28-9. The Lions went out, and shut down the vauntec Dunne backs with stellar defensive line work coordinatec by George Bayoud, and led by Jim Lewis, who time anc time again contained the Dunne speedsters around his end. At halftime the lead was 9-0 on the strength of z Paul Stewart touchdown and a Randy Byrne field goal. In this game the Savage bros. had their feud, ant Undray got in the first lick by intercepting one of the familyls passes and returning it 42 yards, but Henrj revenged soon on a 97 yard run off of a broken pass play. The Lions took the kickoff and drove down the field to score on all running plays. But then the offense stalled, and Quis yanked the first team and installed the second team, to have them score two more touchdowns. The defense, led by Byrne, Bayoud, and Lewis contained the Dutchmen attack, and allowed no points upon the board. The final score was 21-0, Lions. My The team after the 47-0 rout of Kinkaid. The conference championship was on the line against Casady in the Lionls sixth game of the season. The team traveled to Oklahoma City to run their record to 3-3 on the season. It was, however, a well-fought game until the end, which found the Lions on the Cyclone 11, and even then the Lions were not through. A penalty on the last play gave the Lions one more chance. The Lions however, were offsidevon the snap, and the game was over. Before the last minute heroics the Lions had scored on a thrilling interception return by Undray Savage to lead off the scoring. Their 6-6 record, however, does not indicate their playing ability. The team started only three weeks after their first practice at Texas A8zM Novice Water Polo Tournament. The Lions' record was 1-2 with the two losses coming against college teams. The Lions, in all, were defeated by 5 college teams and only once by a High School squad. Victories for the Lions came against Deer Park H.S., Clear Creek H.S., Tulsa City College, TCU, and HP twice. One of the highlights of the season was Taylor Mac- Donald being given lst Team All Tournament Honors at the A8zM Novice Tourney and at the Texas High School Tourney. Also, Tiger Allyn received 2nd team honors at the ASZM Novice Tourney. No one had graduated from the previous year and the Lions returned with a nucleus of senior runners. A UIL ruling made St. Markis ineligible for the state cross-country meet which left the Lions with the Southwe Preparatory Conference championship as their primary goal. The Lions handily captured the SPC title from Casady wh had held a cross-country dynasty in the conference since 1967. Andrew Mailer coached the team with a flexible schedule and had the workouts suited to the individual runnq Occasionally, team workouts were held to keep up the unity and team morale. l Captain Hoke Smith paced the team by taking the highest place of the St. Mark's runners in every meet. One th. could always be seen fighting for that number one spot, however, was senior John Hammack, who although denied tl number one position, was an inspiration to the rest of the team. Ben Coldfarb was another key to the team as he double in cross-country and football. Tom Kennedy gave consistently strong performances throughout the year. Two other senix runners, Chris Loar and Mark Jamieson rounded out the senior portion of the team. Smith, Hammack, Goldfarb, an Kennedy, along with Trey Nicoud received All Conference honors while Jamieson received an honorable mention. Unfo tunately Loar accidently missed a course marker in SPC and was disqualified, but he would have received an honorab. mention award had he seen the flag. Although seniors were the foundation of the team, underclassmen played very important key roles. Sophomore Tre Nicoud and junior Bill Neale both ran consistently well. An injury unfortunately put Neale out of action at mid-seasol however. Eddie Kownslar and John Kellogg anchored the junior varsity while competing with the varsity frequently. The Lions fared well in their Saturday meets which included the Plano Invitational, the North Lake relays, the Jesu cross-country meet, and the Tiger Six Mile Relays in Norman Oklahoma. They always gave strong performances and wo several team trophies throughout the season. Bishop Lynch, however, nudged the Lions out of first place in area meets. Although losing the seniors, the strong junior varsity is an indication that the cross-country team will be in able hanc in coming years. The 1972-73 St. Markis basketball season was a most satisfying one, to say the least. The team finished with a record of 27 wins and just 9 losses, which is the best record since the 1965-66 season. ln addition, the team won the SPC title in February over in Ft. Worth with an undefeated 7-0 record. During the first part of the sea- son, the team took first place in the J.J. Pearce Tourna- ment, edging the host team in the finals, 57-56. They also won the Consolation trophy in the Pepsi-Cola Tour- nament, and went to the consolation semi-finals in the Dr. Pepper classic, before bowing out. The season opened with a disappointing 71-61 loss to J.J. Pearce. However, the team rebounded from this loss with a nine game win streak before again losing to Pearce, 74-62. During the win streak, the Lions defeated Plano twice, Bishop Lynch, Berkner twice, Dallas Chris- tian, Hillcrest, North Dallas, which later won the Coca- Cola Tourney, and J.J. Pearce. The Pearce championship game was the most exciting one of the early part of the season. The game was close most of the way until the Lions led by 10 at 51-4-1 with 4:28 left in the game. They opened Conference with a 80-54 lambasting of Wichita Collegiate. Next victims were FWCD, who fell 79-41-7, and lolland Hall who was defeated by a 78-56 score. The largest crowd of the season turned out to see the Lions whip fasady, 61-4-5, which turned out to be the biggest game of the Conference. In Fort Worth on the final weekend, the Lions romped by three South Zone schools. Greenhill fell, 74-48, while St. 3hn's went down, 65-49 and Kinkaid succumbed to an 80-38 margin. Conference honors went to Mark Nancarrow, who was a unanimous choice for the lst teamg and to Paul Stewart and 'aul Collins, both of whom were Honorable Mention choices. Best Team in Eight Years A 1 The biggest disappointment of the year was co-captaii Steve Fied0rek's inability to play. He injured his knee ii football and then re-injured the same knee in basketball He played in only two games all season long. Departing from this championship team are co-cap tains Mark Nancarrow and Steve Fiedorek, Ben Goldfarb David Holland, and Tommy Walker. Also leaving is fou year manager and trainer Bruce Seri Jolesch. Junior Robert Stokes again and again proved to be the clutch player fo the cagers. R - as 1 . VL In this photo, one can see the rarely observed phenomenon that makes Paul Collins one of the Team's best rebounders. The extra pair of arms shown only appear for a few microseconds each day. lr. Adams , The Lions were led throughout the season by oo-cap- tain Mark Nancarrow and Junior post man Paul Collins. Other starters throughout the year included juniors Paul Stewart, Robert Stokes. and Rusty Getter. When injuries started to rip through the team, the bench was ready and waiting. Senior Tom Walker started many games and filled in admirably as did Junior John Shelley. Ben Cold- farb and David Holland also strengthened the beneh con- siderably along with Keith Holder. . The 72-73 Varsity soccer team started slowly with a loss and a tie but came back with four straight wins, one of which reversed the previous loss. Many times during the season as many as three games were played during a period of five days. With the coach- ing help of Mr. Meyer and Mr. Kohler, the team never gave up. The season as a whole marked one of team spirit, determination, and excellent play. Very early in the season, the team decided to focus only on the NTHSSA playoffs, which they had a good chance of reaching. However, an unfortunate lst round draw, Richardson, knocked the Lions out early. This game was the finest performance of the season as the Lions lost to the heavily favored Richardson Turtles in sudden death overtime. After reordering their priorties, the Lions fought hard for the SPC title, their only loss coming against unde- feated Casady. The final game in SPC reflected the spirit of the season as the Lions, playing without the entire offensive line and one halfback, tied the strong St. John's team. This tie gave the Marksmen second place in SPC. Elected to the All-Conference second team were: Rob- ert Sinclair, John Hardy, David Flanagan, Chip Justice, and to the All-Conference first team were elcted co-cap- tains Bob Bret and Jim Lewis. Bret, Lewis, Jones, and Bastos received All-Conference NTHSSA and Jones and Lewis were elected to the NTHSSA All-State team. Jones also received Regional All American. if 15111 ,,,1 , WWW :A-if l THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK. 230 Jim fD.D.j Lewis led the Lions both spiritually and physically through the long soccer season. As a result of his excellent command and ability he was accorded the honors of All SPC first team, All Private Conference NTHSSA, and the only fitting award, All-State. It is harl to estimate the value of such an outstanding socce player to a team, but the Lions' success were all D.D., doing. The omnipotent Lion offense, Bastos and Jones. Senior Co-Captain Bob Bret, in the words of Meyer, nquarterbacked the offense. He was-the glue, vital link, between the offense and the defense, and his determination and strong voice, he maintained S1 at a high level, on the field and off. The season ended with a record of eight wins, two losses, but the major accomplishments were the new school and pool records established. Under the guidance of Coach Sandy Van Kennan the squad was able to set new school records in all but two events. Taylor MacD- onald set new records in the 100 butterfly, 50 free, 100 free and was a member of both record setting relays. Co-captain Geoff Wilson also set and reset several records throughout the season, including both relays. Tiger Allyn set a new record in the 400 free, and was also included in the 400 free relay. Co-cap- tain Sam Papert played an integral part in leadership on the team and was also on the record breaking 200 relay and 4-00 freestyle relays. Barney Schlinger shat- tered the old school diving record with a total of 245 points. The team had several significant placings in state meets and was also able to send five members to the Eastern lnterscholastic Coaches' Meet, the largest meet in the East. Coach Sandy Van Kennan achieved all his hopes by setting the many records and by send- ing the participants to the EISC meet. Not only were the wins and placings important but the closeness and unity of the team played a major role. As co-captin Sam Papert states, This year's swimming was fun. Football was started again this year after being dropped for two years. This year the Freshman team was done away with and all freshman and some sophomores were combined. Jeff Dow was the coach and old Fresh- man coach Sandy Donaldson was moved to varsity. As most young teams, the Lions were not very successful. After Coach Dow weeded out the players that didn't want to play and found some experienced sophomores, the team won some games against local junior high teams. The ,l.V. Basketball team ended the season with a .500 record - a very good record considering their mid-sea- son slump right after the Christmas vacations. The losing streak was broken with the FWCD game which was the beginning for the last seven victories in a row. Among the last victories were two big wins: the biggest over South Garland by one point and the trouncing of arch rival Casady by 18 points. The J.V. Soccer team probably had the most prod- uctive season of any J.V. team. They had an unblemished record of 17-0-1. Their only tie coming against W. T. White was just a scrimmage. With this fine record also comes the title of NTHSSA champions 2nd division. Out- standing performers were sophomores Paul Geilich and Ron Krape who also were moved up to Varsity in the last part of the season. Much of their success, though, was due to the coaching of Juan Egues. B team swimming was actually a combination of Var- sity and Freshman teams. They had a successful season with a grande finale victory over Highland Park. Every- one broke their own times and all of the times would have been varsity quality a few years ago.
