AVERY MASON, S. T. D Bishop ofthe Diocese of Dallas Founder of the Cathedral School The f.?islzoP's elnatcje After four years of operation, the Cathedral School for Boys is like the senior class. It is graduating. The school began in 1946 with high ideals, but she was beginning her bid for success. Throughout her four years of operation, she grew to fulfill those high ideals, and has now achieved high regard in the field of education. Nothing that is alive can stand still. As the Cathedral School has progressed in the past, so she shall in the future. She will continue in those ideals and provide sound Christian academic training for the young men of the Southwest. This can be done more effectively by means of the step that is to be taken with the beginning of this next term. She will join with another fine institution, the Texas Country Day School, to form a united school that will be called St. Mark's School of Texas. St. Mark's School will have the physical plant we have long hoped for and needed. There will be an adequately appointed classroom building, a modern and well-equipped gymnasium and a beautifully furnished dormitory. A combined fac- ulty will provide the best instruction available to you and those who come after you to form St. Mark's School, and there will be Christian teachings that make men of you and equip you for an adventurous life in this world. St. Marlc's School is as close to my heart as the Cathedral School has been for these four years. We are graduating into something bigger now. Those who have gone before you have as much a part in this new venture as you have. Many of you will be students at St. Mark's. I am made happy by this fact. Of those alumni who have gone before, of those who with the graduation exercises this year become alumni of the Cathedral School, and of those who will continue on with us, I make but one request: that you will continue to support that in which you believe. A school such as St. Mark's will be worthy of the same support you have given the Cathedral School, and all of you should remember that you have had a part in establishing a school we love and cherish. It is my hope that you will transfer your devotion to this new school. 9 .0145 6 .aff ,, r The student body actively participates in Morning Prayer and Sacred Studies which are held under the direction of the Rev. Fr. Bothe, the school's Chaplain. In addition to this, early services are held each morning in the Chapel of the dorm- itory for the boarding students at 7:00. On Sundays, the boarding students attend the 8:00 service at the Cathedral. In both the early services and the Moming Prayer ser- vices the priest is assisted by the students. At 9:15 the procession begins from the school building to the Cathedral with the entire student body and faculty attending. A welcomed addition to the service of Morning Prayer is the music, with Mr. Alec Wyton, recently of England, as the organist and choirmaster. l 5 r 7,42 GCE The Mace is the symbol of authority and is displayed at all official convocations of the school. The President of the Student Council is the Mace-bearer and leads all formal processions. In 1949 the Mace was given by members of the faculty, friends of the deceased, and members of her family. The Rev. M. B. Terrill designed the Mace which bears the follow- ing inscription: To the Glory of God and In Loving Memory of Marguerite Holdsworth Alley Obit. 1949 Q onofz Gounci Left to Right: james Pellman, Byron Mann, Canon Alley, William Allen, Ray Seay. Seated: Dick Carson. Five students from the upper school form the Honor Council. Four are chosen from each of the upper forms, and the President is selected by the Headmaster. The Honor Council functions as the judicial body within the student government. Violators of the regulations of the school are brought before this group and their viola- tions carefully consideredg the verdict is then referred to the proper authorities. The Headmaster is the Faculty Advisor for this group. gfudenf Gounci Left to Right: Robert Hunter, Victor Hunter, Bill Hunter, Richard Burns, Malcolm Boone, Robert Dawson, Joe Fleming. Seated: Dr. Haselmayer. The Student Cquncil was organized for the purpose of closer relationship between the Headmaster, faculty, and student body. The Council is made up of one member from each of the upper forms and one member from the lower school, and two appointees of the Headmaster. Charles Wilson served as the President this year. Three Dances were sponsored by the Council in the Christmas, Mardi Gras, and Spring seasons. It also has established relations with Westminster School in London, England. Candy and gifts were sent at Christmas time, and letters were exchanged. e luzizespeafze qtoup -his group, while having as its backbone members of the Cathedral School student 'y, is open to everyone who is interested in improving his knowledge of Shakespeare's plays. It was organized in the belief that through knowledge come appreciation and enjoy- ment. It's scope is two-fold: to aid the casual reader in his understanding of Shakespeare and to aid and encourage those interested in Shakespeare to go deeper into the field. Here we have a seminar then, not a classg and it is therefore designed for the reader, not the student . Left to Right! William Shakespeare, Robert F. Phillipsg Robert O. The social life here at school has been varied and interesting. There were numerous dances given by the Student Council under the able supervision of Dr. Haselmayer. The dances were held in the study hall which was gaily decorated for each occasion. The Christmas Dance was held December 16. Everyone seemed to enjoy the dance and appreciated the help given by the faculty and student body. The Mardi Gras Dance was held just before lent and was also enjoyed by all. The Spring Dance was well attended and decorated appropriately for this season of the year. There were also several Dorm Parties given which all of the dormitory students enjoyed very much. The Christmas Party was given just before the students left for Christmas vacation. Presents were exchanged and refreshments were served. ---.+......, v fag ,as t V . . . The team never quit try- ing, and in the fourth quarter it paid offg in the last 7 minutes Cathedral outplayed the powerful St. John's team. Cathedral's supporters came to the Texas Country Day basketball game just to see another game, but left with quite a different opinion as Cathedral won 23 to 21. School spirit hit its peak in the fourth quarter when Cathedral nosed out T. C. D. for the victory. The C Club is composed of those students who have participated in one or more of the athletics sponsored by the school with other schools, and have earned a letter. Choral music plays a large part in the liturgy of the Church and has been a vital part of the schoo1's religious life. The choir was established four years ago by the Rev. Alfred L. Alley and Mr. Eugene Blankenship. 2 ALEC F. WYTON, M. A. Mus ic Director Mr. Wyton, F.R.C.O. Ch. M., former organist and choirmaster of St. Matthew's Church, Northampton, England, assumed the directorship this year. He has developed the Choir into a well trained group that leads the singing at the daily Chapel services and has sung programs of fine liturgical music throughout the diocese. Radio and television programs have featured the Choir so that the organization is well known in Texas. Mr. Wyton's excellent English choir training, his demand for perfection, and his solid musicianship have built an inspired group of singers that carry out the Church traditions. 8 is qfQnQ+UT '5- L The Glzafzfet The Charter Club is made up of those members of the School who were on hand during the first year, 1946-47. These are the old-timers who remember how the football team beat T. C.
