Deck Department consists of four divisions, First, Second, Third, and Fourth. First and Second Divisions split the entire main deck area into two areas of responsibility. First Forward and Second Aft. They operate the world's largest sea going cargo booms, the massive 70-tonners, along with smaller 40 and 15-ton versions. They are in charge of anchoring forward through the Forecastle, and mooring to piers and bouys. Third Division operates the long arms of the ship's combat capability, its assault boats. Fourth Division maintains and operates the ship's armament, 3 f50 calibre gun mount forward and 2 more midships. Upon our return to the States, every man in the Deck Department could see the improvement in training, techniques, and proficiency which came about as a result of the many long hours and effort expended in these operations, and we know that the ship is a better fighting unit for it.
