Just as the buds search for the warmth of the sun, so too do we search for knowledge. They grasp for nourishment as we grasp for ideas. In summer, we grow and begin to reach for the skies. Nourished by our academic environment, we broaden ourselves for future endeavors. The harvest enables us to reap the fruits of our education. In our fall days, we gather any available material which will prepare us for the winter days ahead. With the coming of winter, and with a store of wisdom and strength acquired during our college years, we are ready to meet the challenge of a new cycle — our encounter with the world. S ' r ' C, ; - :%. ' , f JfM? - i . • -.r x- f ' i-c ' .¥ • 1 ■V.C, -. 0r : ;i? ' •rt . ■: -i ysfc -,jgr-- On September 30, 1968 death claimed Brooklyn ' s beloved Archbishop, Bryan J. McEntegart. This beloved churchman headed the nation ' s most populous diocese, comprising Brooklyn and Queens, for eleven years. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph ' s College for Women, and in order to commemorate his service and devotion to our college, we the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and sixty-nine, wish to dedicate our yearbook to this self-sacrificing Apostle of Christ. As an exemplar of the heights of Christian living, he can inspire us by his philosophy of dedication and commitment, which is best ex- pressed in the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson in his poem Ulysses. The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep Moans round with many voices. Come, my friends, ' Tis not too late to seek a newer world. Push off, and sitting well in order smite The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths Of all the western stars, until I die. . . . that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts. Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield. MOST REVEREND BRYAN J. McENTEGART D.D., LL.D., L.H.D. Rest in Peace MOST REVEREND FRANCIS J. MUGAVERO, S.T.D. Bishop of Brooklyn Sister Vincent Therese, Ph.D., Catholic University of America President Sister Charles Marita To students of the sixties, a keyword is communica- tion. We recognize the need to speak and hsten to others, before we can become true members of a community and total human beings. Since we are members of a college community, we students acknowledge and cherish the understanding and interest that have become identifiable with our faculty. Three members of this faculty have recently left St. Joseph ' s to take on other positions. Monsignor Leonard is now Pastor of Holy Child Jesus Parish in Richmond Hill; Sister Joan de Lourdes is General Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph; and Sister Charles Marita is Re- gional Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph. For their years of service at St. Joseph ' s and for their untiring efforts to make us total human beings, we wish to remember and thank them. . While the seed has been sown in the spring, we now have the respon- sibiUty of harvesting the growth of this implanted knowledge. Assimilation is the end toward which our education is moving. To become a well-rounded person requires involvement in college affairs. Prac- tical as well as theoretical knowledge and an abiUty to deal with our fellow man in the social sphere are needed for the harvest. Although the seeds of knowl- edge are planted in the spring, unless they are nur- tured with interest and involvement, their fruits can- not be reaped. 30 .L i b. . H . - The Undergraduate Association is a material expression of the ideal of student government. The organization, founded in 1920, is vested with all power granted to the students by the faculty. All students are ipso facto members of the Undergraduate Association, but each class is represented by a percentage of students at the meetings. At monthly meetings of the U.A., presided over by the U.A. President, the students legislate concerning matters within their jurisdiction. These Undergraduate assemblies are also used as the means whereby students discuss basic issues of student government and express their opinio ns concerning any matter in the college or any matter outside the college which is of interest to them. Mary Hanrahan, President, opens the meeting. unC)eRQRAC)uate assocution B.Z. Schneller gives the girls food for thought. Discussion is carried on the floor. 32 STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS: Margaret Dwyer, Nancy Mulholland, Mary Hanrahan, Kathy Jordan. Student council Student Council receives its rights to exist and exercise power from the Undergraduate Associa- tion. The U.A. Constitution establishes it as the administrative body of the U.A. Traditionally, Council exercises the right to initiate action on any matter of student interest. The meeting is ready to begin. 33 The Exam Committee consists of three mem- bers from each of the four classes. The Com- mittee convenes on the fourth Monday of each month. The purpose of the committee is to deHver and collect all examinations and hour quizzes, to take full charge of any violations which occur during a test, and foremost to preserve the honor system of St. Joseph ' s College. exam committee Mission accomplished. chuckles Fran Rose Caruso. Happily, the Exam Committee performs its task. 34 extRACURRicuUR Committee Extracurricular Committee is a special committee of Council formed for the purpose of overseeing the clubs and organizations of the students. The committee is twelve in number, with three representatives elected from each class. In performing their function, the committee is responsible for identification cards, records of each student ' s participation in clubs, and the arranging of the calendar of events. 35 The Committee on Social and Cultural Affairs reviews plans for all the social and cultural activi- ties of the U.A. The committee may advise the students concerned on any item in their plans. It may vote to increase or decrease the appropriation requested in the report it submits to Council. social an 6 CUltURAl SSSK committee 36 lectupe I W!ffWft||i TT TT-ff Added comments were given by Cyril Lyson on urban problems. The goal of this club is to promote a greater love and deeper insight into the French language and culture. The two major endeavors of the club are the play production in the Christmas season and the French musicale in the spring. This year ' s production was the French version of Mary Poppins. 38 The strumming Spanish minstrels greet the photographer. Spanish cluB The Spanish Club presents an ideal opportunity for the student to master her speaking ability of the language. The activities are varied, and a num- ber of films, lectures, presentations and outings are offered to help the student better understand the culture and customs of the foreign land. The club extends a hearty bienvenidos to all. St. Joseph ' s ambassadors to Spain! 39 math ClUB The Math Club tries to provide activities which would attract and interest majors and non-majors. As a regular feature, the club sponsors two lectures a semester. The club also is involved with other colleges in the metropoli- tan area, especially in the form of invitations to lectures, participation in forums and math bowls. The math bowl is a contest similar to television ' s College Bowl. In it, two colleges compete to accumulate points based on correct answers to mathematical questions. We are also involving the high schools in our activities, by setting up similar contests among them, extending to them invitations to our various activities, and setting up one afternoon of the spring semester as a workshop for them. A particular activity of this year involves the stock market. The club as a whole has invested in a stock, the progress of which we are watching and charting as a project for the year. Mary Flahive, the president of the club, an nounces the results of the contest. Happy, smiling faces identify the winning team. With the logical mind of a mathematician, Mary advises the girls. 40 Experimentation is a fascinating part of the Science Club. science ClUB Among the scientists of the future will be Diane Gemert, Mary Ward, and Marynita Anderson.  ip«jf 1 ' t ' Sjr Visitors are always welcomed by the club. 41 inteRnAtional ReUtions ClUB The International Relations Club, a branch of the National Group of the American Council on International Relations, meets to discuss current international problems, stressing particularly their effect on the United States. It aims to increase the knowledge and promote the under- standing of the nations of the world. In addition to its meetings twice a month the IRC engages in inter-collegiate activities and presents programs for the student body. IRC works in conjunction with the Catholic Association for International Peace, the Collegiate Council for the United National and Association of International Relations Club. Through such informal discussions, an understanding of other nations can be achieved. 42 Political Affairs Club is a non-partisan organi- zation which seeks to promote student interest and involvement in political life. The club spon- sors lectures by prominent political figures, films, and conducts an annual straw poll in the fall. During the spring semester, PAC prepares a bill and sends a delegation of its members to the New York State Intercollegiate Mock Senate. 1 Lecturing on behalf of Nixon, Demetrius Kutsuras raises a questionable point. political AffAlRS ClUB Democratic Congressman, Hugh Carey, introduces a Humphrey spokesman. As the keynote speaker of the Democratic convention, Daniel Inouye, Senator of Hawaii, proved to be an interesting lecturer. 43 social seRvice cIub NmsW ' CfAf Social Service Club is open to the entire student body. It enriches the student by providing her with a means of using her talents and abilities in the service of others and allows her the oppor- tunity to make a concrete contribution to the sur- rounding community. The activities of the club vary according to the needs of the community and the interests of the members. However, the club ' s program is flexible enough to meet the various requests made to the College for assistance. There is also a program with St. Francis College which fosters and stim- ulates cooperation on an inter-collegiate level. The club ' s activities include; adoption of families at Christmas, tutorial programs, and coaches for C.Y.O. teams. 44 F i Eileen Marchitelli, president of the club, carries the first bundle. Cookie Spellman surveys the remaining packages. 45 counteppomt EDITORIAL STAFF: Regina Accardi, Associate Editor, Christine Giangreco, Editor-in- Chief, Marie Rocca, Associate Editor. COUNTERPOINT is the official newspaper of the Undergraduate Association of St. Joseph ' s College. It aims to be the vehicle of student opinion, to provide interpretation of issues pertinent to the student body, and to report all items of interest to the student body. Staff membership is open to all interested students. The Editorial Board directs the work of this staff and decides editorial policy. Meetings are scheduled once a week, but they may be held more often just before publication dates. 46 Response Ability At a time when student instability and protest are the order of the day on American college campuses, it would seem that those who voice their views on the hiring and firing of faculty have at least found a sensible cause to champion. They are purportedly concerned about the quality of the education they are receiving. No one could argue with that ideal, and a varied, qualified and interested faculty have an important position in the qualitative academic rating of a college or university. However, when we go one step further and say that students have a responsibility to the in- stitution ' s maintenance of such a faculty, we are treading on thin ice which, if cracked, would leave the ideal drowning in impotency in freezing water. We do not think students have a responsibility to question why faculty members leave, nor with whom they are replaced, nor . . . Responsibility can only be present when recognized choice is pos- sible and events are believed to be within our control. Responsibility also implies competency. How many undergraduate students can make an im- partial judgment on the competency of a profes- sor? Must every professor teach with a view to- ward gaining student support? Must every pro- fessor await the sanction or condemnation of student responsibility ? Where everybody is an authority, nobody is an authority. Campus Campaigns The Student Council has this year attempted to test the effectiveness of unlimited campaign- ing in the present elections for U.A. offices. Candidates and campaign managers have certain- ly publicized the fact that certain girls are run- ning for certain offices, but time and again it has been insisted that elections are not popularity contests, or at least should not be. We all know who is running for office — per- haps the carefully-made posters could feature more than a name or cute slogan. If we are to vote on issues, we must know them. Right to Life The New York State Legislature is faced again this year with a new law seeking to liberalize present restrictions on abortions. Last year ' s Blumenthal bill was defeated mainly t)ecau3e it was poorly-drafted, but this year the legislature seems ready to accept changes in this archaic statute. The Catholic Church holds abortion to be im- moral, and tantamount to murder, and presently New York state law makes abortion illegal except in certain cases where there is direct danger to the life of the mother. The Church and state have long stood together to protect the rights of the unborn child. There is no more reason today than there was at the time the present restrictions were first set down to change this state law. We must remember that, while the legislators themselves may be anxious for change, they are also anxious to keep their seats in Albany, where they meet to represent the voters of their elec- tion districts. State Senators and Assemblymen will not make such changes if their constituents do not want them. The time to contact our legis- lators is now — once changes have been made law it will be too late. Write! Who Done It ? There has been a surprisingly great amount of interest concerning the alleged appearance in our editorial columns of a statement about ques- tionable actions on the part of certain under- graduates. It was never our intention to mention individual behavior of either members of the team or those who volunteered to represent our school on Fifth Avenue on March 17. We are puzzled! We cannot understand why such rumors arose. From our experience we may only infer — a guilty conscience needs no accuser. ' 50 The purpose of the Child Study Club is to extend to the members knowledge of the growth, development and guidance of children, and to sustain their interest in the field by means of experiences supplementary to those of the college courses. The specific activities of the club vary according to the interests of its members and current trends in the field. Activities have included speakers on current issues in educa- tion, field trips, films, tutoring and exhibits. Membership is not limited to Child Study Majors. All are welcomed. Included under the direction of the Athletic Associa- tion are: the basketball varsity, the cheerleaders, and the basketball, bowling and badminton clubs. Volleyball intramurals are held during the Fall semester, and basketball and badminton intramurals during the Spring semester. Teams of at least six girls of the same class constitute an intramural team. Class representatives are elected in freshman year to serve a four year term. The Athletic Association meets monthly. Varsity prac- tices twice each week during the season, and the clubs meet weekly. The officers are President, Varsity Manager, Secretary and Treasurer. Elections are held at the last meeting of the Spring semester. Varsity captain is elected by the members of the team at the beginning of the season. The season ends with a Topsy Turvey game in which the Cheerleaders play Var- sity, while some varsity members cheer. 60 Lights! Camera! Action! Practice makes perfect! St. Jeanne valois QU1I6 The Diocese of Brooklyn has created the Valois Guild to work with the physically handicapped. This guild was named in honor of St. Jeanne Valois who was herself physically handicapped. St. Joseph ' s College provides the setting for the monthly meetings; the student members of Valois assist the handicapped at these meetings enabling them to go to confession, to attend Mass, and to enjoy refreshments and entertainment. In many cases, these Sunday meetings are the only times when the handicapped mem- bers are able to get together. In addition to th ese monthly meetings, many of the college girls have volunteered their time to give religious instructions to handicapped children who would not receive them otherwise. An expanded program of this type has just been introduced and is looking forward to many successful years. St. Jeanne Valois Guild gives everyone a chance to develop — the handicapped through the religious and social functions; the college aids knowing that they have helped deserving and grateful people. 62 The object of the Glee Club is twofold: to foster, stimulate and instill in the students a greater appreciation of music and to promote a greater love for Alma Mater. Membership is open to every member of the College who wishes to join and who is able to meet the requirements set by the director. The officers, president, vice-president, secretary-treasurer and librarian, are elected in the spring term to serve for the following year. Meetings are held weekly. The Glee Club presents an annual recital each Spring. Other activities are undertaken at the members ' discretion. fS 3 Qlee cluB 63 a bird ' s eye view . .
