JOSEPH ' S GIRLS ' GET FIRST DEGREES Most people would agree that half a century is a significant length of time. This is especially true of a liberal arts institution where age has been accompa- nied by expansion, enrichment, and mod- ernization. St. Joseph ' s College for Wom- en devotes this year to a celebration of her fiftieth anniversary, and activities have been planned to make the Jubilee a golden one. As members of the class of ' 66, we have attempted to honor the fiftieth anniversary by taking the back- ward look which is inevitable on any anniversary. This backward look is meant to make the present celebration more meaningful. Brooklyn R. C. College for Wom- en Honors Its Pioneer Gradu- ating Class. Parks lia j| From that moment on the morning of October 2, 1916, when she chmbed the steps of the gray frame building at 286 Washington Avenue, in the heart of one of Brooklyn ' s finest residential areas, each incoming freshman knew that she was making history. Whether or not she was fully aware of the world ' s tensions that had already precipitated a cataclysmic world war. she learned immediately that she was personally engaged in a fearsome responsibility — the laun- ching of the only Catholic day college for wom- en in all of Long Island. Monsignor Coan. pastor of Queen of All Saints Parish, within whose bounds the college was located, told her. in his sermon at the Mass of the Holy Spirit which opened the college year, that the Sisters of Saint Joseph and others interested in the higher education of women had exerted mighty efforts to bring the college into being. Its future, he said, would surely rest, to some extent, in the hands of the twelve pioneer students — the Twelve Apostles as he dubbed them — who were now defying all the pessimistic predictions about any woman who was the product of higher education. The plan for a Catholic day college in Brooklyn went back several years, but it began to take specific form in August. 1915. At that time it was proposed to ask the Board of Regents of New York State to raise St. Angela ' s Hall Academy, located on Washington Avenue near DeKalb Avenue, to the grade and title of St. Joseph ' s College for Young Women. After some delay (caused by a death in Chancellor Sexton ' s family) the provisional char- ter was issued on February 24, 1916. f I center votn. S ' 1iJ ,jtyv|j Co «, «.. PV io. Wo «. , itc.ife, 9a . Quite obviously, the three immediate needs that had to be met by the founders of the college were: the recruitment of high-calibre students; the maintenance of top-grade academic achieve- ment at the college, and thirdly, the necessity of getting the indispensible financial backing which the Regents required. On May 24, 1916, at the Commencement exercises of St. Joseph ' s Aca- demy. Brentwood, Bishop McDonnell announced that arrangements had been completed for the opening in Brooklyn of an institution for the higher education of Catholic women. The need for such an institution, said the Bishop, has long existed, and I feel sure that this announce- ment will meet with the full appreciation of the clergy and laity alike. The tendency to material- ism in education at the present day must be met by sound religious teaching which the new col- lege will give. The twelve pioneer students who responded and came to the college on October 2, 1916. were a diversified group. In April 1917, during the very first year of the College ' s existence, the United States became involved in a global conflict to make the world safe for democracy. This not only affected each of the students in a personal way; it also gave a purposiveness to all their sophomore activities when they returned in the Fall of 1917, accompanied by fifteen new freshmen. Early in 1918 the College was able to purchase the beautiful Georgian home of George Pratt (one of the sons of Rockefeller ' s Standard Oil partner) located at 245 Clinton Avenue on the east side of the wide tree-lined street stretching from DeKalb to Willoughby Avenues on the apex of what was known as the Hill , a social rival to Brooklyn Heights. The new college site was only two blocks from the original building and the Sister members of the faculty continued to live on Washington Avenue for a few years. Everyone felt that the new acquisition gave concrete promise of permanence for the nascent college, and when the student body returned to classes in the Fall of 1918 there was sufficient room to accommodate the eleven new freshmen. More importantly the Twelve Apostles felt that they had met the challenge, and they re- corded in their annals: We knew then that St. Joseph ' s was, is, and always will be proud of her pioneers. By the time they had entered their Senior Year, the original twelve felt the joy of a task well done , as they put it. be- cause two new young women transferred from other colleges into their ranks. Towards the end of that year they had boasted: Our fame had become so great and our names so illustrious that May travels from the Bronx every day, and Amalia from East New York, so that they may be among the numbers of the first class to graduate from St. Joseph ' s. The pioneer class was not wrong in its judg- ment; the quality of education at St. Joseph ' s was • remarkably good for such an embryo institution. Playing inspired basketball, the St. John ' s team slowly forged ahead until they held a 6 — 4 margin at the end of the first quarter. ' - ' ' t ' V.r- This was due, in large measure, to the distin- guished educational experience of the College Dean, Sister Mary Celestine. and to the percep- tive and far-sighted leadership of one of its faculty who shortly became its President, Dr. Thomas Molloy. They made it their first objec- tive to enlist the assistance of a number of out- standing faculty members either on a full or part time basis, and. in conjunction with the Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Mother Mary Louis, to promote the further education of the Sister- members of the faculty. At the first meeting of the Board of Trustees, which was held in the 245 Building on December 19. 1918. Mother Mary Louis requested Bishop McDonnell, then President of the College, to make one of the faculty members. The Rev. Thomas E. Molloy. S.T.D., a member of the Board of Trustees. This being agreeable, he was immediately admitted and became, as President of the Faculty, the spokesman for the immediate monetary neces- sities of the College, stressing the need for liber- ality even with a proportionately meager in- come. First class professors. he said demand high salaries, and their apparatuses and general equipment must be equal to their important work. Bishop McDonnell thereupon suggested that a study should be made of the means by which other colleges, such as Barnard and Adel- phi. managed to attract both funds and students. Then, having asserted that the Brooklyn diocese would back up the College as its work advanced, he immediately made a personal donation of one thousand dollars for a laboratory. The period of the twenties was one of growth and development. The College entered the dec- ade with just one building, namely 245 Clinton .Avenue, described in the early catalogue as a handsome and thoroughly equipped modern edi- fice in red brick and white sandstone, with large, lightsome and well-ventilated classrooms, sur- rounded by extensive lawns, and boasting an athletic field as well as a gymnasium. By 1925 student enrollment had increased to over two hundred. In that same year, the home of Herman Metz, former Comptroller of the Old City of Brooklyn, was purchased and used as an adjunct to the College building which was lo- cated right next door. In 1928. however, the de- cision was made to demolish the Metz house and to erect a large new building on the 253 and 257 properties, extending back to Waverly A enue. The new building was attached to the 245 Build- ing and its annex, bringing minimal changes in both. The architecture and landscaping of the new buildings was designed to harmonize with the original. Although it was not dedicated by Bishop Molloy until January 5. 1930. it was ready for use in September. 1929. This latter year was significant in the history of the College for another very important event — the granting of the permanent charter. In order to prepare for this, academic expansion and excellence has been as seriously cultivated as the enlargement of the physical premises. When in 1920. Dr. Thomas E. Molloy was made Titular Bishop of Loria and Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, he gave up his teaching at the College but continued to be President of the Faculty. In his place Bishop McDonnell ap- pointed the Rev. William T. Dillon. This young priest, ordained on June 2. 1917 and assigned to St. Francis of Assisi Parish, now became a curate in Queen of All Saints Parish and professor of Philosophy at St. Joseph ' s College. From the first, he was an articulate member of the faculty, and then, very shortly, of the Board of Trustees. In this latter capacity he was sent, in October 1924. to Albany to get first-hand information on the requirements necessary for procuring a permanent charter. He reported what he had learned to the Board of Trustees at its January 1925 meeting. Bishop Molloy, who in 1921 had succeeded Bishop McDonnell as Bishop of Brooklyn, (and therefore, as President of the College ' s Board of Trustees), having great confidence in Father Dillon ' s exceptional ability, and especially in his legal knowledge, appointed him as Chairman of the Committee on the Per- manent Charter. Acting in this capacity Father Dillon was in- strumental in bringing about sweeping changes in all aspects of the College. Reporting to the Board of Trustees in January 1926. he said that during the preceding year the College had been re- organized, not just because it had grown in stu- dent population, but chiefly in order to raise standards before applying for the charter. On his own testimony it seems fair to say that this stock- taking was what led Father Dillon to the formu- lation of his basic educational ideals. Many years later, speaking at a convention, he told how he had suddenly become aware of the discrepancy between ideals and practices that existed in most educational institutions. This, he said, was at a time when many places, including St. Joseph ' s College, were toying with the new progressive objective of giving students an active role in their own education. He determined to go the whole way in a daring venture of real student govern- ment. Without question, this was the most con- troversial, and at the same time, the most notable aspect of Father Dillon ' s administration. For this he was praised and he was condemned; he was loved and he was mistrusted. The New York Stale Board of Regents voted the absolute charter at their meeting on February 22. 1929. thereby establishing the College on an independent basis. In June. 1929, for the first time, the College was able to confer its own de- grees by its own authority. An Undergraduate Association was created in the very first year of the College ' s existence. Naturally, this would be only a rudimentary or- ganization. But. with the admission of the fourth class in September 1920. the student body sug- gested that it was time for the four class presi- dents to draw up a constitution for an Under- graduate Association which would be adequate for present and future needs. This was done, and college-wide elections were held for the choice of a president, secretary and treasurer. In addi- tion, each class chose two representatives to sit on Student Council. The Rev. Thomas E. Molloy was made Honorary President. The chief pur- pose of the Undergraduate Association was to systematize activities and to establish a general treasury for the support of student clubs. In 1922 the Honor System was inaugurated, with its Court of Honor for the administration of unproctored exams and the judging of all infrac- tions. This was under the supervision of the Un- dergraduate Association with a member of the faculty as advisor. In 1923 a Student Attendance Committee was established with power to pass upon the legitimacy of excuses for absence. Machinery for student government obviously had already been created by 1925. What hap- pened in that year was that the faculty gave to the students whatever was needful for a true experiment in responsible self-government. All rights given to the students by the faculty were incorporated in a constitution which became the organic law governing student activity. By it the Undergraduate Association was given power to charter the various clubs and activities and to give them financial support; they, in turn, were, to some degree, responsible to the Undergraduate Association. The concept of student self-government at St. Joseph ' s was not a static thing. In the spring of 1929 a number of students had manifested a sincere interest to make the religious life of the campus a unique system of Catholic living, domi- nated so far as possible, by the same ideal of self-direction and personal responsibility as was now the motive-spring of their extra-curricular life. Their hope, they said, was to make their religion so indigenous to themselves that its func- tions and practices would be self-controlled and initiated. Under Father Dillon ' s leadership they organized the Committee on Religion with its motto make this college Catholic. Because of its mission, the Committee was freed from re- sponsibility to any power in the institution except Father Dillon. No coercion was to be imposed on any student to participate in religious activi- ties, but the Religion Committee would service the religious needs of the students insofar as this was possible. As time went on, the students won for them- selves increasing rights and privileges inherent in those already granted. The student control of their own current budget operated with a mini- mal amount of faculty supervision. The manage- ment of their funds was designed to give a sense of stewardship and to teach them to live within their income. Practically considered, the common treasury gave them the means of supporting a wide range of extra-curricular activities for the informal education of those students who joined them without special taxes levied on individual students. 10 By 1930 the College had been accredited by the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Middle States and Maryland, by the University of the State of New York, by the Catholic Education Association, and by the Department of Education of the State of New York. It had also been invited to. and accepted, membership in the American Council on Educa- tion, and the Association of Colleges of the State of New York. During the decade 1930-40. the College pio- neered a program of pre-school child develop- ment courses within the framework of the liberal arts curriculum. In October 1934 the Pre-School for children between the ages of two and four- and-a-half came into being. It was largely the work of Miss Margaret Gardiner with the en- couragement of Father Dillon. Sister Charitina became Executive Secretary of the School and two of the Sister-students became assistants. In establishing the Nursery School the College had as one of its aims the broad education of the col- lege student. In 1940 the College introduced a major in Child Study with a view to the vocational prepa- ration of those students who were interested in teaching children of pre-school age. Further progress was made toward professional accredi- tation for its graduates when, in 1944. an affilia- tion was made with the New York City Board of Education whereby students were enabled to do practice teaching in the public school kinder- gartens. By 1941 the enrollment of the College was 469 full-time students. The graduating class of that year numbered 108 members, and the fac- ulty comprised 49 members, fifteen of whom were nuns and five, priests. The College was now twenty-five years old. and had an alumnae num- bering 1200. The second quarter-century, like the first, was to commence on the eve of American involvement in a catastrophic war. Another very significant development of the forties was the election of two members of the Alumnae to the Board of Trustees of the Col- lege. Dr. Helen D ' Albora and Mary St. John Murphy had both been intimately involved for many years in college affairs and would become even more so as active members of the Board. The imprint of the mind and personality of Monsignor Dillon on the collegiate institution which he guided for so many years more than warranted the title of President that was fin- ally bestowed upon him in 1945. For the next ten years he was to continue to exert his energies in behalf of the College, but, in 1955, Arch- bishop Molloy appointed him pastor of the Church of St. Teresa of Avila. His interest in the Colle?e, however, continued since he remained on the Board of Trustees until his death on Oc- tober 12. 1964. Archbishop Molloy. whose love for and in- terest in the College and its students (including alumnae) was second only to that of Monsignor 11 12 Dillon, had died on November 26. 1956. Thus. by this year the two men whose influence had been strongest left their legacy of loving concern to another generation. Sister Vincent Therese Tuohy. one of the Sis- ter-graduates of 1939 was chosen President of the College by the Board of Trustees in 1956 and was formally inaugurated on May 22. 1957. During the intervening year between Monsignor Dillon ' s departure and Sister Vincent ' s appoint- ment. Monsignor Francis X. FitzGibbon, Dean of the College, had acted as chief administrative officer. In 1956, however, he was appointed Pastor of Christ the King Church in Springfield. Long Island. Sister John Baptist Hull, therefore, succeeded him as Dean in that year. She was a graduate of the College of New Rochelle and of Catholic University, and had been a member of the Speech Department at St. Joseph ' s College for several years. The arrival of a new Bishop in the Diocese at this time meant that the College also had a new President of the Board of Trus- tees, the Most Rev. Bryan J. McFntegart. former Director of Catholic Charities in the Archdiocese of New York, and, most recently. Rector of Catholic University in Washington, D. C. Under new Administration for the last ten years, there has been a fundamental commit- ment to the ideals and principles of the found- ers, combined with an awareness of the needs of a rapidly-changing society. Sister Vincent Ther- ese has made it her chief business to educate the public as well as the educational and business communities, concerning the valuable role which 13 (p{ (y 14 OuvO uQj uifUjJ- L -pjU Of a woman ' s college dedicated to high goals of personal growth, professionalism, and good citi- zenry can make, and already has made, to the pluralistic society in which it functions. She has also sought to make even stronger the bonds be- tween the College and its graduates, stressing how much the College depends upon their con- tinued interest, love and support. A Sisters ' Division was created in 1957 and placed under the supervision of Sisters John Bap- tist and Teresa Marie. Designed to give to Sister- teachers of the elementary schools the same col- legiate education as that offered to full-time stu- dents, the program graduated its first students in June 1965. Three of the graduates received fel- lowships for the pursuit of full time graduate work. The physical expansion of the College during this time (made urgent by a student population of 700 — 230 of whom are freshmen) presently envisions the construction of the William T. Dil- lon Child Study Center in the near future, and has already seen two notable achievements. For one thing, two years ago the College purchased a building on DeKalb Avenue between Clinton and Waverly .Avenues. This is presently being used as a Student Activities Center under the gracious supervision of Mrs. Ruth Carter, mother of an alumna. IS cT 4 The past is of necessity suspended, passive.
