t - b-U K Kandinsky, Wassily. Cojnposttion (4 Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, New York ,- fc- ■-. Under the influence of a liberal education, which aims at the broad and enlight- ened development of man ' s distinguishing powers, each individual ' s potential creativity may be actualized. The concept of artist encompasses more than those who pursue the fine arts. It includes everyone who loves the practise of his art and puts all his idealizing and creative power into his work. As Ruskin said, The artist is ... a person who has submitted in his work to a law which is painful to obey. The law of discipline which guides the pursuit of know ledge is one of the most arduous to follow; but the fruit it bears is a truer creation than that found in any other art — the new idea. The student who loves this quest for truth is un- doubtedly a creative artist in the truest sense of the word. Delaunay, Robert. Shu Disks Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, New York Once the formal academic atmosphere has been left behind, each individual will pursue a particular course of endeavor. A limited few will enter fields that have been opened only recently. The ma)oritv, however, will follow paths previously well defined by their predecessors. Shallow i eflection upon this situation may lead to the inference that one ' s creative abilities are then supplanted by adherence to an established pattern. This assumption is fallacious. The notion of creativity em- braces the fashioning of a new form out of pre-existing materials. Although the path is predetermined, the means an individual uses to traverse it are for him to create. To some individuals government simply implies the exercise of in- different power. St. Joe ' s students, however, realize that their own government makes use of knowledge and judgment in the guidance of their community activities. 158 Interclub Surely this isn ' t where they meet!
