Here Sister Joan de Lourdes presents citations to two of the winners, Carol McVey and Ellen Curry. Bishop McEntegart extends Christmas blessings to our carolers. This is one discussion that certainly looks inviting. Could this be a petition to the Dean? For A ' s, girls? on special occasions... This group looks as if no one remembered to bring a car to get to the dance. W ..JkU: v . I A balance of the theoretical and the practical is an objective of the activities program of S.J.C. Student government, study clubs, and extracurricular groups provide opportunities for all to exercise the potentialities developing during college years. H Hi 42 Student Council Heading the list of extracurricular activities at St. Joseph ' s is our Student Council. That the student body is autonomous is evidenced by the work of Council, the delegated upper house of the Undergraduate Association in co-curricular and extracurricular matters. This year, by vote of U.A., Council incorporated into the constitution a point system setting a maximum work load each student could carry extracurricularly, rating offices accordingly. This is obviously not an Interclub meeting; problems were never this scarce. (Standing) left to right, Angela Maisano, Mary Margaret Farley, Margie Robbins, Sheila Scanlon, Barbara Stella, Angelina Albanese, Maureen McDermott, Maureen Welsh; (seated) Anne O ' Connor, Terry DePompa, Kathy Hatem, Marie Leno. Interclub Council Interclub Council is comprised of the presidents of all activities and elects three delegates to the Student Council. Here, difficulties over Council ' s budget, meet- ing days, etc., are ironed out without taking Council ' s time for these matters. Officers of Interclub prepare list of recom- mendations to Council: left to right, Betty Trust, Barbara Maher, Eileen Moloney. Extracurricular Committee The Extra Curric Committee discusses plans for keeping activities controlled and coordinated. (Seated) left to right, Mary Ann Hibbits. Betty- McDonough, Alice Sheridan; (Standing) Barbara Frohnhofer, Kathleen Doherty, Kay Murphy. The Extra-Curricular Committee keeps a watchful eye on the activity load each girl carries in an effort to restrain those who might tend to overdo it as well as to urge those who might avoid participation. General Assembly Committee Other members of G. A. Committee, Grace Martin, Mary Shea, and Marylou Fitzsimmons, size up the stage from the wings. (Grace has spotted us! ) General Assemblies are planned by a joint stu- dent-faculty G.A. Committee. Their sustained efforts bring variety, smoothness, and dignit} ' to all the assemblies from Investiture to the An- nual College Sing. The gracious winner here is Jean Baumgarten, who accepts trophy for the sophomores star performance in the All College Sing. Mr. Heed makes the presenta- tion, while chairman of the G. A., Maureen Welsh, looks on. Examinations Committee Members of the Exam Committee get a last minute briefing from Chairman Suzanne Trin- neer. (Front row), left to right are Roberta Stark, Jean Baumgarten, Kathy Farrell, ( back row) Maureen Treanor, Maureen O ' Leary, Margaret Owens, Alice Hoffman. Inherent in our college spirit is the privilege of autonomy IN all extra-curricular matters. Our respect for this privilege fosters in us a desire to prove ourselves worthy of the trust placed in us by the faculty. The attendance and exam committees are our agencies of self government. Appeals for overeats are carefully reviewed by the Attendance Committee, left to right, ( itanding ) Jeanne Pluchino, Regina Foley, Sheila Scanlon, Josephine McMahon; (seated) Kathy Kendrick, Michele Nota, Rosanne Perillo, Joan Bambach. Attendance Committee 45 Delta Epsilon Sigma Members of Delta Epsilon Sigma are: (couiiterclock- iiise) Helen Kraljic, Carol McVey, Suzanne Trinneer, Maureen Carney, Sheila Ebert. ercier Circle Mercier Circle, whose members have attained a B average in Philosophy during Junior Year, lines up a program of reports and discussions, sometimes led by dis- tinguished guests on Philosophic teasers, old and new. If you question women ' s logic, we challenge you to discussion with the members of our philosophy honor society, Mercier Circle. They are: (coiiiiterclockiiise) Joelyn lannone, Maureen Carney, Catherine Mitchell, Suzanne Trinneer, Eileen Moloney, Martha Valenti, Barbara Stella, Sheila Ebert, Carol McVey, Helen Kraljic, Marianna Peranto, Joan Meegan, Rosemary St. Thomas, Terry Rodrigues, Doris Healy, Angela Maisano, Rosalie Tutino, Carol Hudson, Marianna Scaglione. Here we see Who ' s Who : (left to right) Ellen Curry, Carol McVey, Maureen Carney, Rosemary St. Thomas, Suzanne Trinneer. Who ' s Who The Student Council nominates and the student body elects those graduating seniors who possess the necessary quaUties for inclusion in Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities. We present with pride the ' 59 selections from SJC. Sigma lota Chi These women have won the battle of the books. Members of our school honor society, Sigma Iota Chi are: (seated) Mary Alice Hoffman, Helen Kraljic, Maureen Carney; (standing) Betty Trust. Gail Leonard, Roberta Silvestri, Suzanne Trinneer, Carol McVey. 47 French Club The French Club also carries on studies after class. Dinners at French restaurants followed by attendance at French films emphasize the perennial attractions of La Belle France. Those who have seen Paris, long to return, and those who have not, fortify their determination to save up and fly. If you parlez le Francois, you ' ll be most welcome here. The French Club: (staniihig) left to right, Bar- bara Lynch, MaryAnn Hibbits, Karen Hughs, Christine Grincato (seated) Angela Maisano, Sheila Whelan. Here we find members of the Spanish Club discussing their favorite subject en Espanol, left to right Althea Suarez, Carol Ann Miller, Maryann Butler, Barbara Caprio. Spanish Club For a deeper appreciation of the culture which they so admire, the members of the Spanish Club this year viewed several films, sponsored a lecture and a display on Iberian life, its tradi- tions and culture. 48 You might ask who ' s focusing whom and we wonder. Members of Math Club gather around transom, left to right, Sheila Ebert, Diana Po- tenzano, Mary Uravic, Ellen Thayer, Joan Kraft, Miriam Dooley, Joan Bambach, Joan Doud, Margie Gal- lagher; (kneeling) Barbara Tilling- hast, Michele Nota. athematics Club Coordinating the theoretical and the practical is one of the principal aims of the Math Club. The College campus has been so carefully surveyed that any architect working on the property would approve thoroughly. Theory is not neglected, however, for formulas and prob- lems do get a real work out at meetings. Science Club Like the Math Club, the Science Club delights in applying theory to practice wherever possible at their meetings. This year a trip to Brookhaven Labs was one of the highlights of the year ' s pro- gram. The peacetime uses of atomic energy are discussed by Science Club members Gerry Keating, Graceann Vento, Eleanor Dorff, Joan Gallagher, Angela Aman- tea, Jane Butler and Carol Hoff- man; (standing) Monica Rose and Peggy Askin. N.S.A The spirit of leadership at St. Joseph ' s College ex- presses itself specifically through the National Student Association. As a vehicle of student government, it provides members with a place where they can compare and contrast methods and accomplishments through discussions with other student leaders. N. S. A. delegates look over the latest inter-collegiate news items before posting them for the student body. Maureen Welsh, Karen Hughes, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, Christine Grincato, Betty Trust. N. F. C. C. S. delegates. Sue Ann Glenn and Barbara Maher look as if their pet resolution had been passed. We hope so. N.F.C.C.S. Coordinating our campus activities with those of other Catholic colleges is the aim of N.F.C.C.S. In order to increase our knowledge of the spirit behind our college way of life, we send a repre- sentative to this national federation to meet mem- bers of other Catholic college communities. The Campus Board of N. F. seem to enjoy their work to the fullest. They are Rosemary Reilly, Maureen O ' - Leary, Josephine McMahon, Barbara Maher, Eileen Moloney, Marietta Stevenson and Sue Ann Glenn. Choir The Choir is another group binding our college Family together through participation in liturgical functions. Faculty and students alike derive a richer flavor from these liturgical activities, accompanied by the chanting and singing of the Choir. Even our cameraman couldn ' t interrupt this Choir Rehearsal. Sacristans It is a rare privilege to be a sacristan, preparing the Chapel and vestments for all our liturgical functions, Mass, Benediction, etc. The reverent care with which the student sacristans perform their tasks is appreciated by all mem- bers of the college community. Sacristans learn how to prepare the vestments from Terry DePompa. First row: Carol Roswell, Carol Rooney; Second row. Pat Brown, Lenza Mc- Sulla, Catherine Giamenelli, Mary Diemer; Third row. Religion Committee Chairmen of the Fashion Show register typical feminine delight at one of the outfits to be modelled. They are: Marylou Fitzgerald, Carol Miller, Kathy Carroll, Mau- reen Brandow. The development of the spiritual life as well as the development of the intellectual life is an integral part of the Catholic college program. Every student is theoretically a member of the Religion Committee, al- though some are actually the workers, such as those who plan the Annual Bridge and Fashion Show. The proceeds of this function are given to the missions. This year some of the money was used to install speakers in the classrooms for the public address system. Now, the prayers said bet ween classes reach all students within the precincts of the college buildings. 53 Literary Society In accordance with its aim of wider appreciation of the world of literature, the Literary Society holds discussions on the works of many renowned authors. Membership is not limited to English majors. All students are given the opportunity to absorb some of the spirit of good literature. Members of our Debate Club gaily accept the trophy they have just won from a Marymount student. Our team, left to right: Maureen O ' Leary, Sally McGovern, Sheila Scanlon, Sue Ann Glenn. The literature of the Beat Generation was probably the topic of discussion that we interrupted here. Members of the Literary Circle are first row. Carol Hudson and Marie Louise Denys; second row: MaryAnn Sullivan, Catherine Restaino, Pat Dawson. Debate Club It is woman ' s preroga tive to be a conversationalist and our girls excel in this art of conversing. What ' s more, they have something to say, as proven by the trophy shown here. Kings Point men don ' t seem to heed the old adage never to argue with a woman as they debate with St. Joseph ' s girls about nuclear weapons. Our girls, left to right, Maureen O ' Leary, Rita Enright, Frances Mar- tin, Eileen 7.arnitz, Margaret Mc- Glynn, Katherine Coleman. Quid Novi Members of Quid Novi stop dis- cussing to pose for a picture. They are: (center) Carolyn Hill; first row ( left to right ) Joan Meegan, Eileen Moloney, Joan O ' Rourke, Barbara Lynch, Jackie Monahan; second row. Carol McVey, Anne O ' Connor, Mary Lou Fitzsimmons, Betty McDonough. Quid Novi, as its name suggests, is a discussion club. While the topics considered are decided by the regular members, all students are welcome to come to discuss the latest in just about everything. I.R.C: Our International Relations Club is most popular with the History majors, but its membership is certainly not limited to them. Every meeting is lively and enlighten- ing. Of course, typing efficiency was never underrated. Rose- mary Murtha takes dictation from Althea Suarez and Ann Connolly. 60 Things had a tendency to pile up just before deadlines. Pat Cavariagh, Terry Sweeney, Ellen Smith, and Maria Mimo haven ' t a moment to spare. V Our Business Manager, Eileen Mullen, had rough days, too. Footprints Remember the day our photographers were subpoenaed. Mickey Nota and Ann Liberatore left no stone unturned to get our pictures. Summarizing the entire college year is the job of our yearbook, Footprints. From September to June, flashbulbs pop, ads are peddled, typewriters click, art pencils scratch, and editors worry. Then, before our eyes, a year stands forth, a record of joys and sorrows, the greeting of a new freshman class, as well as our fond farewell to seniors who have left 1959 ' s footprints on the sands of time. Even our cover was inside before it was outside. Art editor, Maria Mimo, discusses fine points with Kiki Walsh, Carol Mooney, Elaine Trupia, Ada Tracey, Kathleen Champaign. 61 Athletic Association Strategy is essential and our varsity members give it its just due: left to right Chris Connelly, Marge Hanley, Ginny Lee, Ann Burns, Dotr ' Montuori, Joan Kraft, Mary- Ann Waindler, Gail Leonard. This is going all the way. Score two, St. Joe ' s! Jackie Baumann at the foul line. Our cheerleaders swing into action with a hearty St. Joe ' s yell: Joan Franco, Betsy Stoddart, Regina Foley, Rosalie Vendetti, Helen Barth, Arlene Villa. Kathy Carroll exhibits the perfect wind-up to a good old college cheer. The Athletic Association keeps our gymnasium a con- stant beehive of activity. One u ' alks across the gym balcony with caution during intramurals with fear and trepidation of meeting a flying golf ball or basketball. Our varsity basketball team boasts of an enviable record, our cheerleaders are the peppiest and prettiest, and our Softball team are good sports in every sense of the word — considering the fact that we have a garage in left field! 63 The next Open House is certain to be a success with this enthusiastic planning. The committee are (.seated) left to right, Liz Kiernan, Carolyn Hill, Ada Tracey, Helen Barth; (.standing) Lynn Sorensen, Angela Farina, Kathy Carroll. These girls climbed a ladder to the top of the Eiffel Tower to make the Embassy Waltz a success. Counter- clockwise, they are: Liz Kiernan, Margie Shea, Grace Martin and Cathy Regan. Open House, U.A., A. A. Dances 64 Everyone here is pulling for a successful evening and Maria Mimo looks particularly caught up in the prep- arations. Chairmen of the A. A. dance, Flo McArdle and Gail Leonard use their basketball technique on a bunch of balloons. Man, by nature, is a gregarious soul, and this phase of our lives is borne well in mind by the members of our several dance committees. A drag dance is sponsored each semester by the Undergraduate Association and the Athletic Association. Stag da nces are sponsored monthly by the Open House Com- mittee. Liz O ' Connell, chairman of U. A. dance discusses plans with her committee heads, Mary Uravic, Kathy Regan and Carol Miller. 65 Social Service Club President Carol Courtney has no trouble getting volunteers to work in the canned goods drive . Social Service Club If there is a particular art of giving selilessly and with- out ostentation, the members of our Social Service Club have discovered it. This year, the Christmas Drive for food, clothes, and toys for the needy found healthy support among the student body, and our social workers were cheerfully received in many homes. Happy chil- dren all over Brooklyn had their faith in Santa Claus reaffirmed, thanks to the noble efforts of these charitable college students. Can a caption say more than this picture. ' We think not. Valois Guild 66 Members of the Valois Guild pose with the first communicants of whom they are so proud. Members of the Child Study Club prove they can empathize with their charges. They are, left to right: Marylou Fitzsimmons, Mary Mar- garet Farley, Mary McCabe, Rosemary Volta, Carolyn Courtney, Lillian Sciria, Roberta Stark, Elaine Trupia, Joann Tomao, Ann Hyland, Diana Potenzano, Marie Leno, Maureen Mc- Laughlin, Midge Duffy, Dotty Gilmore. Child Study Club The Child Study Club illustrates one of the decided advantages of the small college. Its enrollment encompasses all members of the department, and, at its meetings, the girls devote endless, spirited hours to shop talk which the ordinary lecture- periods, so preciously timed, cannot permit. Other members of the Child Study Club tried the monkey bars. (first row) Roberta Silvestri, Althea Suarez, Lillian Sciria, Maureen Brandow, Cathy Carroll, Kathy Hatem, Pat Lang; (second level) Barbara Stella and Dorothy Ruggiero. (In case you ' re wondering, Betsy Stoddart climbed too high. ) Rosemary Miirtha 68 Glee Club officers Angela Maisano, Roberta Silvestri, Jean Baumgarten and Marie Leno anticipate a successful concert. Glee Club The Glee Club expresses the singing spirit of our college. This year ' s Spring Concert traced the history of music with selections ranging from Gregorian Chant and the Old English lute melody Greensleeves to modern polyphony. 69 Modern Dance Club members undergo intensive preparation prior to their concert in May. odern Dance Club College spirit as expressed through the Modern Dance Club might be termed ebullient. In its most recent concert, the dancers displayed their varied aptitudes and skills in classical themes, spirituals, and playfully rol- licking themes. 70 Art Club Members of the Art Club enjoy a critical discussion of their works: Sheila Whalen, Dolores Martirano, Natalie Haynes. Modern Art with its particular mood of creativ- ity is not beyond the scope of our college ' s women. Here is one of our originals. I . 7] Chapel Players Expressive of the college awareness of the values to be found in the theater, Chapel Players, our dramatic society, keeps abreast of the new as well as cherishing the old. This year, both major productions were offered in-the-round, intimately linking audience and actors. Judging from the happy smiles, we ' d say box office must be sensational. Chapel Players officers are: Mary Ann Sullivan, President (seated) and Anne O ' Connor and Sheila McCarthy. The art exhibit on Parents ' Day had one item which particularly interested little sister guests. Sister Teresa Avila shows the cradle to this future St. Joe ' s girl. We don ' t wonder that this display at- tracted history major, Sally McGovern, chairman of the History Department, Sister Joan de Lourdes, and Sally ' s par- ents.
