Everyone hoards her pennies or counts her dimes for weeks ahead. One may even see eyes looking longingly now and then 'ill' at a charming French doll or some other attractive trinket a wee bit too expensive ,Q by for a strained purse. A The fiesta is indeed a pleasureful occasion but it has an ulterior motive: that jp of charity. While the scene.portrays joy and youth incarnate it also depicts the untiring efforts of the members of the Blessed Clet Unit. To them is due the success 'ittkyg in this organization, established as a branch of the Catholic Students' Mission L Crusade in 1920. Since its foundation it has, owing to their labors, developed 123539 marvelously, sending over a thousand dollars yearly to the missions of the Sisters liljfi of Charity i11 China. .,., L I U yi WX. Notable among the Unit activities is the sponsoring of Saint Margaret's Hospital and Dispensary run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, in Kanchow-ki, Kiangsi, China. These Sisters are sent from the Mother-house at Em- l jfwjy mitsburg, Maryland, and depend entirely for the support of their mission on dona- J' 5 tions. They are absolutely without any other source of income. Besides this the X2 5 'E Unit has solicited and obtained the donation of two chapels for Kanchow-ki Lazarist 'Epi Fathers. Moreover, hundreds of dollars are offered for Mass. intentions for the Propagation of the Faith. t 'iljr rw' , . . . . . is ln no other manner, however, IS the sp1r1.t of generosity pervading the Unit more strikingly demonstrated than by the Sewing Circle, for each Saturday finds ,ii 5. them-the ever loyal members, representatives of Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, 5 ll'L,37'-,l and Senior Classes-gathered in the Unit Room to make clothes destined for either Q ,ill Chinese babies or orphans of their own country. A casual Remember 'ln the Middle of the Nighty? -and the Caravan of Memory starts its winding course do-wn-the long long trail-turning now and then into little byways of loneliness-for all that used to be. . So many, many conversations, Jane could remember, just like this: at school where f'Will you ever forget the way Tiny used to sing 'l wonder What's Become of Sally'? would serve to precipitate a whole roomful of girls so fathoms deep in memories that the 'fYou're Wanted in the Parlori' summons would find them, noses still unpowdered-hair un-waterwavedg 'driving back to school Sunday evenings when 'flfiemember the Delta Sigma Formal the ,night they kept playing 'Who,? would evoke a spontaneous army of uliemembers- and then a little silence as every- one4remembered-other nights-other dances-suddenly. very far away-and very very dear- unconscious that no doubt next year would find them at mere mention of 'fTogether oddly wistful for this very week-end, rainy afternoons at house parties where- But what were they saying?-the voices came from far off-something about uToo Many Parties and Too Many Pals. Didn't you, Jane? 1 Didn't she what? But this was rude! Abandoning the untimely private mental adventuring, Jane. came back to earth-specifically to that party. Came back to find Aline's blue eyes KNO, Jane didn't. She hated it-thought it and maudlin because-I liked it. portion thereof occupied by Alineis attractive dinner laughing at her and Aline's clear voice remarking: silly and maudlin and thought me more than silly Funny-thinking of all the cheers that those same blue eyes had laughed-in class same clear voice had led at school-and the way and play rooms. Aline's eyes had always laughed. Aline loved to laugh. And now, as Mrs. Carlton Adams, she was laughing at the head of her own dinner table-while you, Jane, still -in school, were, with the rest of the world, wondering-- how it happened. How it happened that Aline, Aline who so loved laughter, finding love that meant more than a moon and a mood, suddenly became serious-to the orange-blossom degree! And now-under cover of their laughter, because people always laughed when Aline laughed- she was saying- Some time, Jane, l'm going to tell you-just why l did like it. A Week back at school. Spring holiday very remote. Mail and possibility of town per- mission once more matters of vital importance. Jane regarded Box 253 disapprovingly. Just one letter today.
