One dreams of the Christ King's anguish, And mourns th-e futile, mortal span. One begs and pleads and God is silent, Like a dungeon Wall, He answers not, And the prisoner drifts into chaos, And the heart is faint with its troubled lot. Then holding his ros'ry, like a handful of wheat, The poet seatters these humble grains In fields divinely shaded, Where each prayer a harvest gains. ' Then he feels the Light Within him . ' That transcends the jailing clodg Butonly death can break the bars, Though the poet persists, and calls upon God. Now' While he prays, a feeling of awe Comes struggling up from the deeps of despair, Like a diver, it wins a hard-fought Way From many a doubt's entangled lair. The Feeling is born of the clink of beads, That quells the mooker's crave to deride, And Wins the battle of humble Faith 'Gainst doubting, stubborn Pride. ,,l gl .G r ,f -, g ,, wi 4 Q rw i 'l U' 4, . 1' iff .5 lr, fe 'g If -',E:FU.' 1' . , I ilitl 'fibfyyll ksiggfkxfl , ll 5 ' N 'lf s ill it lliifgstiy l wie fiviflj 'hf if tiled, -'I WHEN ,lwlaigdi ll Wing' 'ld' ' is ii H E Q .Ji .h'l '. They were thirsty, they were hungry, They were solaced but in dreams, When at length the Ocean's lure Drew them close, under sunset beams. The Ocean called in gayest Voice- 'CNO more of hunger now, it smiled, ' uEat and drink and laugh, be gay! No more suff'ring now, my child! The three little Waifs Who had ne'er known sands Or oceans or shores in all their years, Beheld mounds upon mounds of bread and cakes, Far beyond Wonders of dreams or fears. Endless bounty set before them, - Thirst and hunger to quell and- shrink, Brought them down to their knees in rapture On the sands- by the ocean's brink. Ah! but the soft little rolls of bread, In crisp, inviting Amold, Were but barren -Wastes of pebbles Yellowed by sunset gold. And the sparkling Waters, the endless Waters, Butthe bitters of a mocking sea, A And the little Waifs Without father or mother Are dead-but from hunger and pain are free. Their story lies in time long past, But a wave still sings it.to me, To the rhythm of De Profundis, Chanted by the tides of the sea. l 1 z :7.,j,,'vj W-' 1 .J-'J XZ- I 1.1, -- 394, 4'-iff: I 4.122 137 '-'Q' 'ii Qui' F' rf'3.,r .uv f .,r ,fr l- ,gg Edin 3' ,reg 1. l !l'fgw...f'3 GY L al v' L N x N s. 0, ,. gli li mir, , 51 Vis!
