' 'CQ y It was in December that the Spanish classes gathered for KA Night in Spain. psi n II :W-,' I Outside it was cold with even a tinge of snow in the air, but within the auditorium - ,fi all was warmth and light. So realistic was the program presented that night that i p ll the audience might easily have imagined itself transported to the heart of Old Castile. It may have been that the actors were loathe to abandon their parts-at li any rate,, it was .on that memorable night that the plan of organizing a Spanish Tj, ,y Club was formed. ' 'sy e fail 'brig' In February, La Estudiantina was formally organized and its activities began. 175 lb' 'X N . . . . fwiqr il The purpose of the club 1S to develop an appreciation of the literature and the X all pi ,J customs of Spain and- to further the student's knowledge of the spoken language. One of the features of the club is the Spanish Quartet, whose songs are those of the gtotl-Q9 Universities of Madrid and Salamanca. .sum il The outstanding event of the year was HCervantes Night when the club paid due honor to this most famous of Spanish authors. On the anniversary of his death, K L April 23rd, a banquet was held in the dining hall, followed by a program in which QQ? the life and works of Cervantes were featured. ' N La Estudiantina Panamericana is indeed a very young society, but udging from Xjbfjf G1 Affe up the success it has attained this ye-ar, we may predict for it a prosperous future. They were thirsty, they were hungry, They were solaced but in dreams, When at length the Ocean's lure Drew them close, under sunset beams. The Ocean called in gayest Voice- 'CNO more of hunger now, it smiled, ' uEat and drink and laugh, be gay! No more suff'ring now, my child! The three little Waifs Who had ne'er known sands Or oceans or shores in all their years, Beheld mounds upon mounds of bread and cakes, Far beyond Wonders of dreams or fears. Endless bounty set before them, - Thirst and hunger to quell and- shrink, Brought them down to their knees in rapture On the sands- by the ocean's brink. Ah! but the soft little rolls of bread, In crisp, inviting Amold, Were but barren -Wastes of pebbles Yellowed by sunset gold. And the sparkling Waters, the endless Waters, Butthe bitters of a mocking sea, A And the little Waifs Without father or mother Are dead-but from hunger and pain are free. Their story lies in time long past, But a wave still sings it.to me, To the rhythm of De Profundis, Chanted by the tides of the sea. l 1 z :7.,j,,'vj W-' 1 .J-'J XZ- I 1.1, -- 394, 4'-iff: I 4.122 137 '-'Q' 'ii Qui' F' rf'3.,r .uv f .,r ,fr l- ,gg Edin 3' ,reg 1. l !l'fgw...f'3 GY L al v' L N x N s. 0, ,. gli li mir, , 51 Vis!
