They have no ambition, no further desire than the means of mere existence. They like it well enough here, and will hear of nothing better. If just once I could feel that I had touched a soul, and opened one pair of eyes to the real beauty of life, I would feel more satisfied withxthat one act than with a whole yearis teaching. Her friend was more practical. '4You're a teacher, she used to say, Naot a guardian, or uplift worker, or female minister. You go your way and let them go theirs. But Marian often pondered. this question alone. What use was she as a teacher, a sculptor of character, a refiner of souls, an educator of hearts, here, where character was warped in the grip of poverty, hearts were smothered under the weight of desolation, souls were stilled in the death-dealing grip of despair. 'Would she ever, she wondered, have the opportunity of performing some service that would make her feel her life 'had not been in vain? These thoughts were in her mind as she walked through the dingy streets toward the Acton7s home. Wood Street, she was pleased to discover, stood fairly out of the melee of the dock and warehouses, and the dwellings instead of the usual brick tenements, were tiny, four-room, frame MX ' ,fitil i 1 I-. e-2-7 5 fo ,ng lf! 2531 nf' 'V :I T V ea use-Q. r , g. . .H s rr' ' ti r sq: is 4 ,K f-, , .- .
