Such will be the kindl i ll fate of all who revisit Saint Joseph's College during the celebration of her Silvei Jubilee, to seek the -scenes of our school-girl's happy days and find every nook and l T corner garlanded with the tender June blossoms of the past. y fl T I y i Let our first visit be paid to our Lord in the Tabernacle, there to kneel in prayer V gy durlng the beautiful Mass at dawn, to receive Holy Communion at the same dear J T Altar and renew in our heart all those cherished memories of past friendships. Our WW? same pure Mary Immaculate stands with outstretched arms to receive her children, f 5' p to bid them welcome and to intercede for them as in the days of yore. 'LJ Dear, dear girls of the long ago, where are they now? They too must often 'X Lf pause and think of utheupulse of the pass-ing years, and the marvelous changes that have intervened. Only a word here and there of this one or that one opens up the Qt f fykif' vista of years, linking the Past with the Present. We'll cast aside for a time the 0 it cares and responsibilities of an exacting world and become Saint ,loseph's girls once T f , more. On, on we move like restless children. Through peaceful meadows we stray Z, ' ,rf,.-,Al to c'Our Lady of the F ield, inspired with its Legend of Ottawanta. In our early , , days we were taught to breathe a prayer for this Indian chief who, so beautifully f honored '4The Flower of the Field and the Lily of the Valley. Tom s Creek IS still ' .4 the winding creek as of old, the Campus has improved it and added to its beauty almost beyond recognition. We seek and find Mother Seton's Spring near the Grotto 1 , of old. Everything inspires devotion, the paths-the scenes--the shrines, their very ,655 names suggest the memoried haunts of girlhood, where the birds, the trees and Howers , N seem to greet us with a thousand welcomes. How precious is the Educatlonal mfiu- Cnce of living for years amid such beautiful, peaceful surroundmgsg how it develops ' A taste and purity of soul. 'I 'SSH-A . i V A visit to God's Acre-'clfiending o'er the low ,green mounds Wl'lCl'6,7,1'1CE1ll1 the Cross, the consecrated dust of loved ones lie, we pause to breathe a prayer, then gaze , , 9' V in admiration at the magnificent Stations of the Cross, of carved rock and copper Q ,H with the life-sized ulVlount of Calvaryn in the center. The emotions are tw so deep and the memories so sacred, we dare scarcely touch upon them. Once moi? Don't you want to hear about my trip? It was very wonderful. The passage over was extremely rough, but the ulfioman was so fasc1- nating I did not have time for umal de mer. Italian men are delightful and I learned to say uBuon Giornon at least, like a native. Now I am in Switzerland, in the midst of winter sports and it's marvelous! We ski at a little place near Gstod and as yet no broken bones! About the first of March I leave for the Holy Land with lVIarie Rial Cmy sisterj and we spend forty days there. Of course we shall be in Jerusalem for Easter and hope to see the Pyramids by moonlight-7' And again from Kirkleigh Villa: ClVlrs. R. T. Woodwardl 'CI wonder why this good Sister asked me I poor old mel, to contribute just a few lines to the ARGUS. She could not have realized that to write something of my experiences as a pupil of Saint Joseph's I had to look back at least seventy-five years. Now you know times have changed and I, too, have been hurled along in the whirl- pool of life and experience. I was a pupil at Saint Josephls during the Civil War. Of course being a child of the South, I sincerely hated anything or anybody north of lVIason's and Dixon's Line-even in my childlike ignorance disliked hearing the very words uUnion and uStars and Stripes. Today I am old and can look at things and pcople in their true light. lVIy most sincere friends are residents of New York and I am never prouder than when my eyes rest on the Stars and Stripes. Such is the change that has come over this once hot-headed Southern girl. I prepared the enclosed for the N. C. W. C. News Service. It occurred to me you might be able to use it, as modified, for your book. You may feel it is not in the style of an Alumnae .tribute-I am sure in my present state of depression, I could not dare write what I feel about my oldest friend. Yet, Saint ,Ioseph's will want to honor Louise Banton, and the story of her work may after all be the greatest incentive to our Alumnae to make life a worthy record. If Louise Banton could choose, she would want the story of the Bantons. She was very proud of them, as all old Virginia families are. But, her mother's family also served our country, Sister Felix lVIcQuade, one of the Angels of the Battlefield, being her mother's aunt. They were the ages of Faith and Love, the age of Obedience, of Devotion Q9 and Loyalty, which has clung to us for half a century. of A Our incomparable Directress, Sister Raphael, with that charm and grace of the Sunny South, possessed the rare combination of great dignity with perfect humility. 'Stl To be a graduate of Sister Raphaelis time has a distinction all its own. Her name 1 ' J is still an inspiration and will always remain a cherished household word in our 'J' ' 4 l 1 homes: . g . . ,1 J Sister Lucia will stand out preeminent, as the teacher par excellent, her beautiful gi life will always remain a memory fresh and fragrant in the hearts of all who knew , if at her. Her spirit of Faith was sublime. g g How we admired our dear, fascinating Sister Madeleine O,Brien, so highly gifted f2f'Q5 herself, and so generous in imparting such wonderful knowledge out of her great l abundance. , . Our dear little Sister Caroline was so earnest, so sympathetic and so affectionately 3 ' ' devoted to the children committed to her care, that, after a lapse of fifty years, that S, loyalty and love for their teacher has never died. - Wfiil Next on my list come my precious friends, Sister Juliana Chatard and Sister S lui Benedicta Burns. To know these two chosen souls was to love them with a love that H shall last throughout time and eternity. uwle shall not look upon their like again. ' Q All of these beloved Sisters completed their fifty golden years in the service of God. t il Sister Ann Scholastica with her great, big generous heart was our Angel of lVlercy. She taught us obedience. Now we appreciate her goodness and kindness ,l A ill while then we sorely tried her patience. No sketch of the Sisters of Charity would be complete without special mention of dear Mother Margaret who will be forever enshrined in our hearts. W'omen valiant and strong-Pillars of granite! Their personality has left its mark on Saint Joseph's. One by one they have carried to the throne, of God their 4'Garnered Sheavesn of deeds well done and are now resting side by side with our Saintly Mother Seton.
