Eclectic Excerpts - From Kirkleigh Villa: uAbout the year eighteen hundred and seventeen Catherine Ann Herbert of Saint Mary's County, Maryland, became a pupil at Saint Joseph's Academy, Emmitsburg, Maryland. Herbert sent her daughter, Mary Regina Bean, also of Saint Mary's, to Saint Joseph's Academy. In the meantime Sister Regina had become Mother of the Institution. That had become much enlarged and improved as the years rolled on. A spacious Community house and an Academy building greeted the View as the stage-coach brought its tired, travel-Worn passengers near the Institution. Pupils were welcomed by the sweet and gracious Sister Raphael who was Directress of the Academy and was aided by an efficient corps of teachers.. Among these were Sister Lucia, of the Music Department, Sister Gertrude, of the graduating class, Sister Kostka, Sister Mary Alice, Sister Julianna, Sister Livorni, Sister Rossina, and Sister Victorine, of the English, Latin, French, Spanish, Painting, Embroidery, and Plain Sewing Departments. ' ' f,'f'.,tQ?Qp Of the curriculum, the Music Department was especially good, one interesting A feature of it being the monthly, First Friday Concerts when the music pupils displayed Q8 y their skill on Harp, Piano, and Violin, and also their vocal ability. The professor, i tDoctor Dielman, presided. These concerts took place in Distribution Hall, before the - assembled pupils. fToday this hall serves the purpose of the high school study hallj C Q Under Distribution Hall was a large study hall, where each girl had her desk, books, c and a comfortable chair for study hour. ln this hall we assembled for studies, also C, for forming ranks in marching to church, the dining-room, and the dormitories. 0 fx On the ground Hoor, called more often the basement, were the play-rooms. Sister ,nu 3 y Scholastica presided in the study-hall, Sisters Pacifica and Donata gave their attention .iiffyf A f i to the girls in recreation hours, both in the play-rooms and on the campus. , T Cin the border of the campus stood the original Saint Joseplfs house, used it was said, by Mother Seton, and later converted into a laundry. Don't you want to hear about my trip? It was very wonderful. The passage over was extremely rough, but the ulfioman was so fasc1- nating I did not have time for umal de mer. Italian men are delightful and I learned to say uBuon Giornon at least, like a native. Now I am in Switzerland, in the midst of winter sports and it's marvelous! We ski at a little place near Gstod and as yet no broken bones! About the first of March I leave for the Holy Land with lVIarie Rial Cmy sisterj and we spend forty days there. Of course we shall be in Jerusalem for Easter and hope to see the Pyramids by moonlight-7' And again from Kirkleigh Villa: ClVlrs. R. T. Woodwardl 'CI wonder why this good Sister asked me I poor old mel, to contribute just a few lines to the ARGUS. She could not have realized that to write something of my experiences as a pupil of Saint Joseph's I had to look back at least seventy-five years. Now you know times have changed and I, too, have been hurled along in the whirl- pool of life and experience. I was a pupil at Saint Josephls during the Civil War. Of course being a child of the South, I sincerely hated anything or anybody north of lVIason's and Dixon's Line-even in my childlike ignorance disliked hearing the very words uUnion and uStars and Stripes. Today I am old and can look at things and pcople in their true light. lVIy most sincere friends are residents of New York and I am never prouder than when my eyes rest on the Stars and Stripes. Such is the change that has come over this once hot-headed Southern girl. From the- Oflice of the Editor fClara Douglas Sheeranj Quarterly Bulletin International Federation of Catholic Alumnae: I have just returned from Philadelphia from the funeral of my oldest friend, Clara Louise Banton. I prepared the enclosed for the N. C. W. C. News Service. It occurred to me you might be able to use it, as modified, for your book. You may feel it is not in the style of an Alumnae .tribute-I am sure in my present state of depression, I could not dare write what I feel about my oldest friend. Yet, Saint ,Ioseph's will want to honor Louise Banton, and the story of her work may after all be the greatest incentive to our Alumnae to make life a worthy record. If Louise Banton could choose, she would want the story of the Bantons. She was very proud of them, as all old Virginia families are. But, her mother's family also served our country, Sister Felix lVIcQuade, one of the Angels of the Battlefield, being her mother's aunt.
