is our SIGN the triumph of the Cross over the 75 years of dedicated service since the founding of Seint Joseph's Academy in Prescott by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cerondelet SIGNO 1960 is our SIGN the triumph of the Cross over the 75 years of dedicated service since the founding of Saint Joseph's Academy in Prescott by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondetet SIGNO I960 Academy seal redrafted in 1958 The Academy's seventy-fifth anniversary of its founding gives new value to the school seal, with its motto IN HOC SIGNO MEA SPES The motto fakes its meaning from the position near the Cross since IN THIS SIGN IS MY HOPE. On that Cross arc laid a fleur-de-lis and carpenter's square— symbols of the congregation of St. Joseph of Carondelet founded in France in 1650 and established in Prescott since 1878. Beneath the loft arm of the Cross is a depiction of Prescott with pine treo and Thumb Butte for the mile-high city. JOSEPH OF CARONDELET perpetuate Christian education in Prescott with dedicated purpose for Christ and His Mystical Body Sister Marietta, junior moderator pencils English composition Sister William Joseph directs physics, math and sophs Sister Anne Marie, principal guides speech arts and seniors Sister Mary Magdalene counsels freshmen and speaks in various, modern language St. Joseph Sister Vincentia is the hub of phone and parlor calls Sister Rosella, treasurer figures in her business office follow pioneer educators Mrs. Paul McKinley, secretary spins Kiss Me, Kate on the new stereo for library listening 7 Tony Sanchez, in social sciences and P. E. becomes the first full-time layman at St. Joseph's Dorothy Dalke teaches girls sewing for their personal use Mary Angela Elledge catalogs new books by the score ' Li New Jesuit, alumnus, heralds 75th year In 1890 the Academy was moved from Alarcon to Marina Street and remained there until Frank Murphy repaid an earlier kindness of the Sisters by giving them the site of the present school in 1904 I ( JUJUf! When Richard Loftus, S. J. returned from his studies in Innsbruch, Austria, he solemnized his first Mass in his hometown and took the occasion to remind Prescott of the 75th anniversary of his twelve-year alma mater During his brief stay in late August Father Loftus celebrated Mass in the Academy chapel and in his former parish church He has since returned to Germany for continuing advanced studies in science At the turn of the century Academiam picnic at the Dell Bishop Espelage celebrates Mass for the Sisters of St. Joseph in their own chapel Loyal alumnus Bishop Francis Green leaves his duties as auxiliary bishop of Tucson for a morning at St. Joseph's There was a time when the Prescott Sisters were a part of the vicariate-apostolic of Tucson with Most Rev. J. B. Salpointe until 1897 when diocesan status gave Rt. Rev. Henry Granjon scope for his recorded kindnesses to the Academy. Other French Fathers like Alfred Quetu and Claud Mandin gave of their time from Sacred Heart parish in Prescott. In the 20's the Claretian Order took on parish administration and chaplaincy at St. Joseph's with loved Fathers like Camillo Torrente and Felician Payas. Since 1939, when Prescott was taken from Bishop Gercke's diocese of Tucson, the Academy has been under the Gallup pastor Most Rev. Bernard Espelage, OFM CLARETIAN FATHERS have been continuing their services to Sisters and students for forty years — keeping Christ and His teachings among them. Fathers Bernard O'Connor, pastor; Bernard Nowicki, Whipple chaplain; Marcel Salinas, assistant; David Clark, saying the CYW Mass for students Academy chaplains begin with early French priests Most recently ordained of the priests who call St. Joseph's theirs is Richard loftus, SJ, who visited home after ordination in Innsbruch. He has since returned to Munich for further study. His homecoming marks another milestone in names of young men uniting parish and Academy altars in Holy Sacrifice for Prescott. Ruth Ann Brand sets a goal in an Academy game. By play for the Prescott league, Ruth was named an All-American for I960 Tucked in the 1909 memory book: the girls' basketball team attired in silver-gray suits trimmed with red braid, with full bloomers— scored a brilliant victory over the Prescott High School girls' team, under the efficient Mrs. Fredericks.
