STATE CATHOLIC TOURNAMENT On March Z 1998 the 22nd annual State Catl' ol1c Basketball Tour nament came to a close For the 16th tlme Wheelmng walked offw1th the tltle by defeatmg hard fxghtlng but cold St .Toe team St Joe opened the tourney on Frlday mght February Z8 by outclass mg the ha rd f1ght1ng Steelmen from St Anthony s The Irrsh b1g boys B1ll Burns and Terry Malloy contr1buted 13 polnts apxece and together collected over 40 rebounds Coach Lamb was able to clear hxs bench IH the game so all varslty members got to see some actlon xn the tourna me nt The fmal score of the fmrst game was 88 to 3 In the second game of the afternoon sess1on Clarksburg Nlotre Dame defeatedwell balanced St Peter S team from Fa1rmont by the score of 60 to no On Fr1day n1ght the flrst game pltted the tall Parkersburg Cru sade rs the tourney favo rrte agamnst Don Bosco of Huttonsvllle The C ru sade rs emerged yxctors by a lopsmded score 8 O Immedmately followxng th1s game Dark Horse Central defeated Charleston Cathollc 64 to 43 On Saturday n1ght March 1 the tourney moyed 1nto the seml flnal round Ou r ow n Irxsh of St Joe dow ned h1ghly rated Notre Dame bya score of 64 to 57 Agam led by B1llPasqual1 who pumped IH long shots from rn ba ck of the foul lxne for the vxctory Th1s game howeyer was no as ea sy as xt sounded Notre Dame fought all the way Led by All Stater Joe DeLuca and llttle Sam Fernandez Clarksburg made a great boy s from Clarksburg The second game porved to be the greatest upset of the tourney as ll hc e l1ng Cc nt ral throttled a Parkersburg freeze IH the last three mmutcs got the ball and Wlth only 1 seconds rema1n1ng All Stater Ted Matte rn pumped lnajump shotfrom1O feet for a 48 to 46 Central vxctorx In th1s game Centralplayed lxke champs They got every loose ball eyery bad pass and kept the game at a slow enough pace to keep the use fulness of the Parkersburg helght ady antage down to a mlnlmum Central played cool control ball and mn that game no team ln the state of Vlest Vxrglma Could have beaten them The final game thus p1tted the defendlng Champs St Joe ys the hxgh flyxng Central team from Wheelmg Thls how eyer wasn t the day for the Irxsh From the opemng buzzer a flurry of bad passes and mlssed lay ups made It w a sy to see that the Irlsh werer t1n the1r usual form. Central led by the Tournament's Most Valuable Player Pancho Flores and Ted Matte rn moved to a Z1 pomt lead early ln the fourth quarter Then the Irlsh began to mov e The scormg punch of Butch Goheen the reboundxng of Bzll Burns and sp1r1ted ballhawk1ng play of Dave Zzhlmann began clos1ng the gap Howeyer th1s rally fell short as the Central Maroons downed the Irlsh 62 to DZ The Irxsh however can hold thelr heads h 1gh a s they played good ball overall IH the tournament Coach Lamb and all the St Joe fans can be yery proud of the Ir1sh We X.klSl1 to thank Mr Powers Mr Lombardo and all the members of the 1 r flne staff for gxymng us the opportunlty to partxcmpate in such a wonderful tournament Art Brant and Bob Connell 105 , x A I ' - .
