BASKETBALL REVIEW When St Joesph's opened 1ts 1957 58 basketball season on Tuesday De cember 10 aga1 ns t Guyan Valley they returned to the hardwood court w1th a squad of 8 s e H1 o r s and Z Jumors The Ir1sh proved they had an exper1enced team as they de feated the W1ldcats 63 40 In the1r second outmg St Joe rolled over the young une1cper1enced Marshall 'Generals 79 39 1n the Marshall gymnas1um Every member of the team scored 1n the game w1th Terry Malloy and Dav1d Z1hlmann 1ead1ng the way w1th 13 po1nts each On December 15 the Ir1sh entered the second Tr1 State Cathol1c Tournament 1n Ashland Kentucky Deta11s of th1s tournament can be four d on another page of th1s sect1on S Joe fa c ed 1ts f1rst real test of the season on December 20 when they played Hunt1ngton East W1th supe rb team Splflt and outstand1ng personal perfor mances by B111 Pa s qual1 and Terry Malloy the 'I-hghlanders' were defeated 82 75 Th1s was the f1rst t1me St Joe has beaten East s1nce 1953 After rc turnxng from the Chr1stmas hol1days the f1rst game was played on January 7 aga1nst M1lton Although the Greyhounds led at ha1ft1me 23 25 Pasqual1 and Malloy aga1n colaborated to produce a Z4 poxnt th1rd quarter and put the Ir1sh 1n the lead to stay The f1nal score was 67 54 The T1gers' of Vmson were next to V1S1t the F1eld House and they prov1ded the fans w1th plenty of act1on 1n the f1nal qua rte r 'Xfter tra1l1ng by 14 po1nts 52 38 at the end of the th1rd quarter VIHSOH staged a desperate rally to close the gap to 6 po1nts before the f1nal bu z ze r s ounded w1th the score 66 60 Ashland Holy Fam1ly v1s1ted Huntmgton on Janua ry 12 as the two Cathol1c foes met for the second t1me St Joe led all the way but found Holy Fam1ly a much 1mproved opponent w1nn 1ng by only n1ne po1nts 66 57 St Joe won 1tS n1nth stra1ght game of the season and 1tS tw elfth stra1ght ove r atwo seasonper1odbydefeat1ng the Ceredo Kenova 'Wayne Wonders' 78 54 on January 17 Due to an ODVIOUS slump 1n three p rev1ou s games the newspapers reported th1s game would be a close match but the Ir1sh' recovered 1n style as B111 Pasqual1 and B111 Burns led the way to v1ctory w1th 25 and 19 po1nts respect1vely For the f1rst txme 1n regular season compet1t1on St Joe traveled to Parkersburg to play Parkers burg Cathol1 c Much attent1on was d1rected toward th1s game because these two teams competed IH the f1nals of last year s State Cathol1c Tournament St Joe w 1nn1ng by4 po1nts 65 61 A large crowd was on hand 1n Parkersburg, and the y g ot plenty of act1on as St Joe Jumped to a small lead 1n the f1rst quarter Then the ' Crusaders' started h1tt1ng the mark and both teams traded baskets unt1l ha1ft1me w1th the score 33 32 1n favor of Parkersburg Durmg the f1rst half both teams were plagued by personal fouls B111 Burns Terry Malloy and B111 Pasqual1 leftthe court charged w1th 4 4 and 3 fouls respect1ve ly wh1le Parkersburg had one player w1th 4 and one w1th 3 Th1s fact obv1ously had a d1rect effect on the outcome of the game because Burns and Malloy were forced to watch at least two full quarters of the contest from the bench Wh1le these two tall boys were out 1n the th1rd quarter the Crusaders found the basket and took the lead they never lost The f1na1 score 71 55 turned many to thoughts of the 1958 State C3thOl1C Tournament wh1ch may poss1bly produce the keenest compet1t1on s1nce the tournaments concept1on after suffer1ng the1r f1rst defe at 1n 10 out1ngs the team bounced back 1nto the w1nn1ng column by over powe r1ng the Douglass Wxldcats ' 90 73 B111 Pasqual1 left the St Joe a tta c k w1th 41 po1nts to become the f1rst player 1n the area to pass the 40 po1nt ma rk Cont1nu1ng 1n the w1nn1ng column the ' Ir1sh' defeated the Bar boursv1l1e P1rates' 59 46 1n a Western Conference game Butch Goheen led the scorers w 1th 17 POIHES as he helped St Joe keep a clean slate 1n Confer ence compet1t1on For the second t1me 1n the season ST JOE defeated Charles ton Cathlo1c but not w1thout a hot fxght 1n the f1rst half Charleston Jumped to an e a rly lead and led 19 10 at the end of the f1rst quarter Then St Joe got the range and took a two po1nt lead 36 34 at halftxme beh1nd the shootxng of Walter L1nkf1eld He collected 11 po1nts 1n the second quarter and f1n1shed as h1gh po1ntman w1th 21 The f1nal score 81 66 left St Joe w1th a record of 12 w1ns and 1 defeat thus far 1n the season Number 13 was added on February 4 w 1th Man at the other end of an 89 58 score Defeat of the H1llb1ll1es also enabled the Ir1sh to rema1n undefeated 1n Western Conference play Th1rteen proved to be unlucky as St Joe went down 1n defeat for the second txme 1os1ng to Ashland Holy Fam1ly 75 73 Th1s was the th1rd meet1ng of the two teams and Holy Fam1ly w a s determ1ned to vnn lt They led 1n eve ry stanza and stopped a last quarter St Joe rally by controll1ng the ball l1ke pros Although St Joeproduceda Z3po1nt fourth quarter lt was not enough to secure a v1story 99 ll - ll - ' - ' I ll - ' , 1 - 1 - I , ' 1 ' . t. . .
