ursiiy Box Go ' 0 Sierra From top left: Coach Heap, Mark Sherwood, John Postert, George Gray, Parrish Tate, Doug Kennedy, Ryan Mangum From bottom left: Mike Gray, Mike Thomas, Cord Udall, Ryan Ashton, Paul Acosta, Steve Kinlichee The 1987-1988 Varsity Boys Basketball had a really good season. We went to the state tournaments. We started with four wins and no losses. During our Hfth game, we ran into the Window Rock Scouts. We just couldn't hit anything that night. Then we went to Globe for the Globe Christmas Basketball Tournaments. We took fourth place. We lost to Miami and then came back to beat Payson and Hayden. After we got back from the holidays, we played Snowflake for our first conference game. We lost to them. After that, we went on a nine game winning streak. We blew everybody away, We even beat Winslow on their home court! They had never lost there in three years. The score was 76 to 61. We finished regular season play tied for Hrst place with Winslow and Snowflake. Our record was ten wins and two losses. We then went to Window Rock for the Conference Tournament as seeded number two behind Snowflake and ahead of Winslow. The reason Snowflake went as number one seed is because they beat us and Winslow during the regular season. We went as number two because we beat Winslow. We got a bye in the hrst round and we beat Show Low in the second round. We then lost to Winslow in the semifinals, by a score of 71 to 63, Then we beat Monument Valley for third place and a trip to the state playoffs. lt was an important game because the loser was out for the year. At the state playoffs down in Phoenix, we played the Buckeye Hawks in the first round. Unfortunately, we lost. Buckeye went on to win the state title by beating us, killing Snowflake, and destroying Winslow. We were the only team that was beating Buckeye throughout the playoffs. Over-all we had a good season. We are proud of what we accomplished even though we failed to win the state championship. That was our biggest goal. Probably the highlights of the year were: Ryan Mangum dunking the basketball in a game at the state tournaments and Steve Kinlichee getting into a Hght against a Show Low player during a game in the regular season. by Stevenson Kinlichee 66
