L A Very Successful Year The SJHS Academic Decathlon team won tirst place in the North Region competition by scoring nearly 3,000 points higher than any of the other 22 teams from Coconino, Mohave, Yavapai, Navajo, and Apache Counties which competed in the Aca- demic Decathlon on Feb. 6. Students are divided into three categories, Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity. The team consists of nine members, two competi- tors and one alternate at each level. Each category takes exams in math, science, economics, lan- guage and literature, and the his- tory and arts of the age of En- lightenment and the Romantic Period. They also had to write an essay, give a formal and im- promptu speech and participate in an interview. The final event of the day was the Super Quiz in which the en- tire team had to answer ques- tions on the history of flight. The SJ team won Hrst place in that event. Each member of the SJ team was awarded a 5300 scholarship and each alternate 3150. Also, scholarships of S50 were given for each gold medal. SJHS did very well indeed. Among the top four point earner at the competition, SJ students held every position except third. Also, in the Hne Arts and Social SciencefHistory categories, the team won six of the nine medals available, a truly great feat. An- other amazing fact is that the SJ team won at least one medal in 9 of the 10 events, the essay being the only event in which SJ failed to secure a medal. As mentioned above, The SJHS team excelled in the Hne Arts category. ln fact, all of the 1 st and 2nd place med- als were won by students from SJHS. The team members were ner- vous and anxious the morning of Feb 6. There was also a lot of cramming on the way to Round Valley. One of the members re- marked that he would be glad when the day was over. Several others echoed the sentiment. However, by lunchtime Mark was saying that the competition was great. By the end of the day, he was about the most tired up member of the team. Mark has vowed to come back and help the team to victory next year. I love it, are his words. On March 8th, the team headed to ASU for state competition. When the day was through, the team had gained 4 more individ- ual awards for a total of 28. Be- cause of a difference in the meth- od of computing grade point averages, one of the team 's lead- ing point earners, Joane Garren, was unable to compete as a team member at State. Brian Shideler is to be commended for his hne showing on such short notice. Going into state competition, SJHS was ranked 8th in the state by virtue of our score at region- als. However, we Hnished 15th at state, but were well pleased with our performance. The enthusiasm shown by Mark Brown is what keeps Academic Decathlon coach Risa Udall go- ing. The Redskin Smokesignal of March 28, 1988 quotes her as saying, The reason l have be- come so . . . committed to the Academic Decathlon is that 1 have seen my team members 'fall in love' with the idea of learning. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Risa Udall from her team members for the hours she spent researching, reading and studying in order to help them understand the material they were studying better. 1987 was the Hrst year that the SJHS Academic Decathlon team won Ist place in the Region I competition. This year the team repeated and superseded that accomplishment. ln fact, the team won over S3300 in scholar- ships because of their great work. If they can win next year, for the third year in a row, the traveling trophy will ha ve a per- manent home in St. Johns High School. Mth high hopes, we wish next year's team the very best of luck for success. Go Get 'Em!!! by Hyrum D. Lunt Team Members Excell noted. The event is listed Hrst and then the place won.
