Coaches Martinez and Koppes make final preparations before the race. Cross-Country has always been misunderstood as only a subsidiary of Track and Field with little consideration to the enormous distance between the two. To emphasize the difference, the CIF and the Del Rey League initiated that commencing in 1977 the distance concerning a Cross-Country race be changed to three miles 14,838 metersl instead of the conventional two miles 13,225 metersl, demanding increased endurance, speed, dedication and desire. Despite the extension of the traditional two mile course the Braves advanced to be a team of spirit and steady improvement with seniors Don Beaver, Ken Gollersud, Tom Hunter and Greg Brownfield, the latter two on varsity. Junior Felipe Gonzalez lead the varsity squad for his second year in a row. Other obvious standouts were Junior Jim Hunter and freshman Brian Lewis. Jim was extremely consistent and Brian was the freshman that set the example for all the underclassmen who we hope to see big achievements from in the future. gm iis' Varsity coaches and Greg Brownfield discuss strategy before the race.
