At the beginning of the 1969 season, many people said that because of the loss of 20 of 22 starters from last year's team, the Brave Varsity football team would be hard pressed to make a decent showing. But as pre-league games progressed, the Braves proved that they once again would be Santa Fe League contenders. After playing three games in league, St. John Bosco and Damien found themselves atop the league stand- ings, both with 3-0 records. Thus the stage was set for a titanic struggle between the two teams. The game was played on a cold rainy evening. A valiant Brave bid for a second consecutive Santa Fe League title was stifled by the mud and the Spartans. In the final week of the season, the Braves defeated a fine Verbum Dei team by 7 points, as the Seniors played their last game on the Brave Field. A recap of the season showed that most of the line- men who started and finished the season had never before played at positions they filled this year: people like Bill Reid, Dan Bridges, Mike Pearring, Mike McCarthy and Mike lwasiwka. All had a hand in the fine 6-3 season the Braves had. Of course any mention of Brave Football 1969 has to include the great back- field of Jim Loy, Art Armijo, Glen Cardarelli and Darnell Johnson, who all turned in very fine jobs. Then the people who had experience at their positions- like tackle Ray Paradis, guards Paul Bellenbaum and Ken Kapono and ends Kevin Trechter and Tom Ramirez. These and the rest of the Brave team made up a group of light but quick-hitting people with desire who achieved a 6-3 record and a season Brave fans can remember for a long time.
