As the days lengthened and the maples around the circle decked themselves in their green finery, Saint James pupils frolicked on the shade-dappled grounds and enjoyed the exuberance of the awaken- ing of nature. During the golden hours after dinner, Seniors remained outside the main building to talk about classes, the forthcoming dance, masters, girls, vacations, and-of course-colleges. Behind their glib remarks and whimsical laughter, however, was the realization that the year at Saint James-a long, but successful year-was drawing to a close and with it, a stage in their lives was ending. The first act of this annual drama oc recognition for a job well done curred during the fall season, when the yearly bumper crop of new students descended upon the venerable old institution. Confusion was in- evitable, but it gradually was eradicated by a substantial sense of normalcy. Contact with family and the girl left behind were replaced by an expectant dash to the Post Office during recess and cherished vacations. When they were not pining the loss of their summer pleasures, the pupils on and off the Football field learned the valuable lesson that any sort of potentiality was useless unless it could be sufficiently converted into concrete action.

Secondly, came winter with its blustery winds and fresh, crystalline snows. This was the holiday season when, during the long Christmas vacation, uneasy scholars vainly attempted to smother their pre-exam neuroses with yuletide cheer. When they returned to the campus, the students, spell of false security was completely shattered by the thunder- ing pressure of supplementary assignments and review classes. Some- how, everyone lived through this mental ordeal. Finally, the rough, brown earth was smeared with green splotches. As the chilling blasts gave Way to gentle zephyrs, spring came-and prevailed. The verdant hue of green combined with the pink and white dogwood trees to form a warm hypnosis on everyone's sensibilities. All this came and went-too soon. Then the last few wonderful days were upon the students. They invited those girls back home to come up for the best dance of the year. When their dates smiled their approval of the beautifully decorat- ed gymnasium, the members of the Social Committee realized that all the hard work was not in vain. All the students-and the Seniors, par- ticularly-acknowledged the fact that the dance symbolized Saint James School in its finest hour. Herein were mixed the elements of gentility, congeniality, and liberal- ity. It was great to be a Saint James student. together for the last time
